Chapter 8 - claire told the truth too late)

The hotel changed immediately.
Security moved Margaret to another floor.
Police documented the threatening messages.
Daniel's phone was placed in an evidence bag after technicians copied its contents.
The number had been spoofed.
No useful origin.
Rachel urged everyone to separate.
Daniel refused.
"They threatened my mother because of this."
"Which is exactly why you don't all remain in one room."
Margaret agreed.
"Daniel, listen to her."
He hated it.
But he did.
Before leaving, Claire caught his arm.
"Can we talk?"
He looked at her.
"I don't know what else you want to say."
"Something I should have told you before the wedding."
Daniel almost walked away.
Then Claire said.
"I knew your father might be alive."
He stopped.
Every trace of patience vanished.
"What?"
"I didn't know for certain."
"How long?"
"Three months."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Three months?"
"I found a photograph in my father's safe."
"What photograph?"
"Thomas."
"Recent?"
"I don't know how recent. Maybe ten years."
Daniel stared.
"And you said nothing."
"I was afraid."
"Of your father?"
"Of losing you."
Daniel laughed in disbelief.
Claire's eyes filled.
"I knew if I told you, you would start investigating."
"Of course I would."
"And my father would know I betrayed him."
"So you chose him."
"No."
"You chose the wedding."
Claire could not deny it.
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
"I loved you."
Claire's face broke.
"I love you."
"No."
"I do."
"You loved having me."
"That's not fair."
"You knew my dead father might not be dead."
"I didn't know how to tell you."
"You say, Daniel, I found evidence your father may be alive."
Claire cried silently.
"I was going to tell you after we were married."
That sentence ended whatever remained.
Daniel stepped back.
"Why after?"
Claire wiped her face.
"Because then you couldn't leave."
He stared at her.
Claire realized what she had admitted.
"Daniel..."
"That's exactly what your father taught you."
"What?"
"Love is leverage."
She looked down.
Daniel walked away.
For the first time, Claire did not follow.
Later that night, she entered the hotel bathroom and stared at her reflection.
The woman looking back at her no longer resembled the bride who had stood beside the pool.
She remembered Margaret kneeling.
She remembered the satisfaction she had felt.
She remembered pushing her.
It had not been an accident.
That truth mattered.
Claire had spent her entire life explaining cruelty as reaction.
Someone embarrassed her.
Someone failed her.
Someone made her angry.
Her father had always given cruelty respectable names.
Discipline.
Standards.
Control.
Now the internet had shown Claire something she had never been forced to see.
Herself.
She turned off the phone.
Then opened her laptop.
There was one thing she had not told Daniel.
A folder copied from Richard's private server.
She had taken it three months earlier after finding Thomas's photograph.
The folder was encrypted.
She had never managed to open it.
Its title was simply M7.
Claire connected the drive.
Tried another password.
Failed.
She thought about her father.
Birthdays.
Companies.
Addresses.
Then she remembered Blackthorn.
The original fire date.
1014.
She entered it.
Wrong.
Thomas's birthday.
1218.
Wrong.
Then she remembered something her father once said.
Every kingdom begins with inheritance.
Claire entered Charles Whitmore's birthday.
6021935.
The folder opened.
She stopped breathing.
Hundreds of files.
Scanned documents.
Photographs.
Video.
Audio.
A spreadsheet titled ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS.
Claire opened it.
Names appeared.
Some she recognized from politics and business.
Some were deceased.
Some were not.
One line had been highlighted.
Daniel Mercer.
Status: Acquisition pending.
Claire stared.
Acquisition.
Not marriage.
She opened Daniel's file.
Medical records.
Financial records.
Personal photographs.
School transcripts.
And a DNA analysis.
Claire's hands began shaking.
She opened it.
Probability of biological relationship.
Subject A: Daniel Mercer.
Subject B: Charles Whitmore.
99.7 percent.
Claire stared at the screen.
That could not be right.
Charles Whitmore was her grandfather.
If Daniel was biologically related to Charles...
Then Thomas Hale might not be Daniel's father.
Claire scrolled.
A note appeared beneath the DNA result.
Maternal sample unavailable.
Subject classification confirmed.
HEIR B.
Claire whispered.
"Oh God."
A noise came from the hotel corridor.
She quickly copied the folder to a new drive.
Someone knocked.
"Claire?"
Her father's voice.
She froze.
Richard was not supposed to know where she was staying.
"Claire, open the door."
She did not move.
His voice softened.
"I know you're afraid."
Claire looked at the laptop.
Then at the door.
"Your wedding was a mistake."
She almost laughed.
Richard continued.
"But your life doesn't have to be."
Claire silently sent Daniel a message.
COME TO ROOM 814. NOW.
Richard knocked again.
"You don't understand what Daniel is."
Claire typed another message.
BRING SECURITY.
May you like
Then Richard said something that made her blood turn cold.
"If he finds out who his mother really is, none of us survives this."
