Chapter 9 - The Name Marcus Hale Stole)

Marcus Hale had not been born Marcus Hale.

His original name was Michael Rourke.

Nora found the records.

Twenty years earlier, Michael Rourke had been involved in a financial fraud investigation in Nevada.

No conviction.

Witnesses withdrew.

Evidence disappeared.

He changed his name several years later.

Then he began moving through investment circles using family connections that were not actually his.

Elena had discovered this while auditing charitable funds.

But that was not the secret that frightened her.

Marcus had once worked for Vittorio's father.

Not officially.

Vittorio's father, Antonio Romano, had built the family's first major construction holdings.

Antonio died when Vittorio was twenty nine.

His death had been ruled a heart attack.

Marcus had been a junior financial assistant in one of Antonio's subsidiaries under his original identity.

Elena discovered irregular transfers from the week Antonio died.

Millions had vanished.

The destination accounts later helped fund Hale Meridian.

Vittorio listened quietly.

"You're saying Marcus stole from my father."

Elena shook her head.

"I'm saying your father discovered him."

Nora produced an archived email recovered from an old company server.

Antonio had scheduled a meeting with investigators.

The meeting never happened.

He died the night before.

The original toxicology report no longer existed.

Vittorio looked at Daniel.

"Can a twenty year old death be reopened?"

Daniel answered.

"With evidence."

They now understood the scale.

Marcus had spent years attaching himself to wealthy families, finding vulnerabilities, manipulating trusts, and using legitimate businesses to hide theft.

Bianca became his partner later.

Elena had come too close.

Her accident was not simply revenge.

It was containment.

If she publicly exposed Marcus, older crimes could surface.

Bianca needed Elena silent.

When Elena survived, they imprisoned her inside a false medical identity.

Then Bianca entered Vittorio's life to control what Elena had left behind.

Lucy.

The trust.

The company shares.

The family itself.

Vittorio felt contaminated by the entire deception.

He ordered a complete audit of every company account Marcus had touched.

The results were staggering.

Employees had been bribed.

Contracts manipulated.

Money diverted.

Several executives resigned before investigators even questioned them.

Media discovered the story.

The Romano estate became surrounded by reporters.

Headlines turned Elena's suffering into entertainment.

Vittorio hated it.

Lucy could not understand why strangers stood outside the gates.

"Are they waiting for Mommy?"

"No."

"For Bianca?"

"Some of them."

Lucy considered this.

"Bianca was mean."

Vittorio knelt beside her.

"Yes."

"Is she coming back?"

"No."

"Promise?"

He looked into his daughter's face.

"I promise."

Lucy nodded.

Then she asked, "Can Mommy sleep here?"

That question was harder.

Elena had not yet returned permanently.

She spent some nights at the mansion and others at a rehabilitation residence recommended by independent doctors.

She wanted to come home.

But the mansion contained memories she could not always process.

The staircase.

The kitchen.

The garden.

Her old bedroom.

Sometimes she remembered vividly.

Sometimes not at all.

One evening she stood inside the breakfast room.

The dog bowl was gone.

Vittorio had thrown it away.

The rug had been replaced.

Still, Elena stared at the floor.

"Emma told me."

Vittorio knew what she meant.

"I should have seen what Bianca was doing."

"You did when it mattered."

"Too late."

Elena looked at him.

"Lucy still runs to you when she's scared."

He said nothing.

"That means you didn't fail her."

Vittorio looked toward the window.

"I almost married the woman who tried to kill you."

Elena's answer surprised him.

"You were lonely."

"That's not an excuse."

"No. But it is an explanation."

They stood together in silence.

There was affection.

Pain.

History.

But neither tried to force the past into the present.

They had learned the danger of pretending.

Meanwhile, Bianca and Marcus turned on each other publicly.

Bianca offered prosecutors information about Antonio Romano's death in exchange for reduced charges.

Marcus responded by revealing that Bianca had personally arranged Elena's car sabotage.

Then Bianca produced emails showing Marcus ordering illegal medication changes at Ridgehaven.

Each confession strengthened the case against the other.

Prosecutors refused both initial deals.

The trial was scheduled.

Emma believed the worst was over.

Then she received another unknown message.

Only one sentence.

YOU RECORDED THE WRONG MORNING.

She showed Daniel.

They traced the number.

Impossible.

Burner service.

Emma reread it.

"What does it mean?"

Daniel frowned.

Then he realized.

"Your forty minute recording."

Emma opened the original file.

The morning of the dog bowl incident.

She had started filming before breakfast because Bianca had received a call from someone Emma did not recognize.

Emma had followed at a distance.

The first twenty minutes contained mostly empty hallway footage and faint conversation.

They had never analyzed it carefully.

Nora enhanced the audio.

Bianca's voice became clear.

Then another voice.

A male voice.

Not Marcus.

"You were supposed to keep the girl quiet until the wedding."

Bianca answered, "I can control Lucy."

The man replied.

"No. You can't. And Vittorio is asking questions."

Bianca said, "He knows nothing."

Then came the sentence that changed the investigation again.

"If this collapses, Romano cannot be allowed to testify."

Vittorio listened.

"Who is that?"

No one knew.

Marcus and Bianca were not the top of the scheme.
