Chapter 14 - The House Became Lucy's Again)

Six months after the trial, Vittorio returned to the mansion.
He had avoided it.
So had Elena.
Lucy asked to go.
"I want my yellow room."
Her nursery had yellow curtains.
Vittorio had forgotten she called it that.
They drove together.
Emma met them there.
Daniel had already replaced the security system.
The wedding decorations were long gone.
Bianca's belongings had been removed.
The breakfast room had been renovated.
Not extravagantly.
Simply enough that it no longer felt like the place where Lucy had been humiliated.
When they entered, Lucy stopped.
Vittorio watched carefully.
"You okay?"
She nodded.
Then she walked to the spot where the dog bowl had been.
Nothing marked it.
Lucy looked at her father.
"Bianca sat there."
"Yes."
"And you got me."
"Yes."
Lucy thought.
Then she ran toward the garden doors.
"Can I play outside?"
Children move faster than trauma when adults give them room.
Vittorio laughed.
"Yes."
She disappeared into the sunlight.
Elena stood beside him.
"She makes it look easy."
"It isn't."
"No."
They watched Lucy chase leaves across the terrace.
Emma joined them.
"I've been thinking about leaving."
Vittorio turned.
Emma looked nervous.
"Why?"
"You don't need me the same way now."
Lucy appeared outside and pressed both hands against the glass.
"EMMA."
Her voice was muffled.
Emma smiled.
Vittorio raised an eyebrow.
"Apparently we do."
Emma laughed.
Still, she wanted something different.
Years of housekeeping no longer felt right.
Elena had an idea.
The Elena Romano Foundation had once supported women recovering from financial abuse and coercive control.
After her disappearance, Bianca had quietly redirected much of its funding.
Elena planned to rebuild it.
She asked Emma to become director of family advocacy.
Emma stared at her.
"I clean houses."
"You protected my child."
"I'm not qualified."
Elena smiled.
"Then we'll get you qualified."
Emma accepted.
Daniel also changed roles.
He remained head of security, but Vittorio ordered him to take actual vacations.
Daniel reacted as though this were punishment.
Lucy continued drawing him as a square.
The Romano companies underwent major reforms.
Independent oversight.
New compliance structures.
Whistleblower protections.
Vittorio sold several holdings connected to his father's older network.
He no longer cared about preserving every piece of the empire Antonio built.
Some inheritances deserved repair more than worship.
Part of the recovered stolen money funded Ridgehaven patient advocacy programs.
The facility itself came under new ownership after investigations revealed systemic failures.
Several medical professionals lost licenses.
Others faced charges.
Kelly Morris received legal protections and later joined Elena's foundation as a consultant.
The people who had been paid to look away discovered that silence could eventually become evidence.
Elena recovered unevenly.
Memory did not return in a straight line.
Some mornings she remembered details from fifteen years earlier but forgot a conversation from the previous afternoon.
Other days everything seemed clear.
Doctors could not promise complete recovery.
She stopped asking for promises.
One evening she and Vittorio walked through the mansion garden.
"You know what I remember perfectly?" she asked.
"What?"
"The first time you asked me to marry you."
He smiled.
"You said no."
"You asked in front of ninety people."
"I thought it was romantic."
"It was horrifying."
"You said yes eventually."
"After you asked privately."
They stopped near the fountain.
Vittorio reached into his pocket.
Elena stared.
"No."
He laughed.
"You don't even know what I'm doing."
"I know that pocket."
He took out a small ring box.
She covered her face.
"You are impossible."
"No audience this time."
She looked around.
Lucy was hiding badly behind a hedge.
Emma's shoulder was visible beside her.
Daniel stood farther away pretending not to participate.
Elena laughed.
"That is an audience."
Vittorio looked toward the hedge.
"Go away."
Lucy shouted, "NO."
Elena laughed harder.
Vittorio opened the box.
Inside was not Elena's old ring.
It was a simple new one.
"No replacement," he said. "No pretending nothing happened. No trying to become who we were."
Elena's eyes filled.
"What are you asking?"
"Start again with me."
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then toward Lucy.
Then back.
"Yes."
Lucy exploded from behind the hedge.
"She said yes."
Emma applauded.
Daniel shook his head as if public joy violated security protocol.
Vittorio slipped the ring onto Elena's hand.
No ballroom.
No champagne tower.
No reporters.
No performance.
Just the people who knew exactly what the promise cost.
Later that night Lucy asked whether there would be another wedding.
Elena said, "Maybe."
Lucy frowned.
"Can I pick the cake?"
Vittorio said, "Absolutely not."
"Why?"
"Because you wanted a dinosaur cake for your birthday."
"It was good."
"It was green."
"Cake can be green."
Elena whispered, "She's right."
May you like
Vittorio realized he was outnumbered.
And for once, he loved it.
