Chapter 6 - The Road to Ridgehaven)

Vittorio left before dawn.

Daniel drove.

Emma insisted on going.

Nora joined them thirty miles outside the city.

Police had been notified, but the legal situation around Ridgehaven was complicated.

Elena was officially listed as a voluntary long term patient under guardianship.

The guardianship itself appeared fraudulent, but overturning it required a judge.

Vittorio did not intend to wait.

Ridgehaven stood behind high iron gates in the mountains.

It looked more like a private resort than a medical facility.

Stone buildings.

Tall pines.

Perfect landscaping.

Security stopped them at the entrance.

Vittorio identified himself.

The guard checked a list.

"You're not authorized."

"My wife is inside."

"I can't confirm patient identities."

Nora stepped forward.

"We have evidence of guardianship fraud."

The guard repeated the same sentence.

Vittorio's restraint began to crack.

Emma touched his arm.

"Lucy."

That one word steadied him.

They waited for police.

A county deputy arrived first.

Then another.

Nora presented documents.

The facility administrator appeared with legal counsel.

Arguments followed.

Phone calls were made.

A judge was contacted.

Hours passed.

Vittorio stood outside the gate looking at the second floor windows.

Somewhere inside was the woman he had mourned.

At 11:36 a.m., a temporary emergency order was issued allowing law enforcement to verify Elena's identity and condition.

Vittorio was permitted inside.

Emma remained with Nora.

Twenty minutes later Vittorio returned to the lobby.

He looked gray.

Emma stood.

"Is it her?"

He nodded.

Alive.

The word seemed too small.

Elena was alive.

But reunion did not happen like movies.

She did not run into Vittorio's arms.

She did not immediately recognize him.

She sat in a quiet room beside a nurse, thin and uncertain.

Vittorio entered slowly.

Elena looked at him.

Nothing.

He said her name.

Her eyes filled with fear.

Then he showed her a photograph of Lucy.

Everything changed.

Elena reached for it.

"Lucy."

Vittorio began crying.

He had not cried when the accident happened.

Not in public.

Not during the memorial.

Not when he packed away Elena's clothes.

But now he sat on the floor in front of her and cried.

"She's safe."

Elena touched the photograph.

"My baby."

"She's four now."

Elena looked confused.

"Four?"

"Yes."

She stared at him.

Something in his face reached her.

"Vittorio?"

He could not speak.

She remembered.

Not everything.

Not clearly.

But enough.

Later doctors explained that Elena had experienced serious traumatic brain injury, prolonged memory disruption, and years of manipulated treatment.

Sedatives had been used far longer than medically necessary.

Contact attempts had been restricted.

Certain memories had been dismissed as delusions.

Someone had worked systematically to keep her confused.

Marcus's guardianship had allowed it.

But Marcus was not the person Elena feared most.

During the first formal interview, a detective showed her photographs.

Marcus.

Elena recoiled.

Bianca.

Elena began shaking.

Vittorio noticed.

"What did she do?"

Elena closed her eyes.

Fragments came slowly.

Bianca had been there before the accident.

Not as Vittorio's fiancée.

Not even as someone Vittorio knew.

She had worked under another name.

Bianca Moretti had been a consultant at one of Elena's charitable foundations.

Elena discovered missing funds.

Marcus and Bianca were stealing together.

Elena confronted Bianca.

Two days later, Elena's brakes failed.

She remembered the car leaving the road.

Water.

Darkness.

Then waking in a private clinic.

Bianca standing beside her bed.

"You should have stayed dead."

The investigators now had motive.

Fraud.

Attempted murder.

Kidnapping through fraudulent confinement.

Financial exploitation.

But Bianca was missing.

Worse, Lucy was still at the Romano estate.

Protected by armed security, yes.

But Vittorio suddenly understood that Bianca had spent years preparing for this family.

She knew the property.

She knew the staff.

She knew Lucy's routines.

Vittorio called Daniel.

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Then his phone rang.

The mansion security office.

Vittorio answered.

A guard spoke quickly.

"Mr. Romano, we have a problem."

"What?"

"Daniel Cross is missing."

Vittorio stood.

"And Lucy?"

Silence.

May you like

The guard's next words stopped his heart.

"Her bedroom is empty."
