Chapter 8 - Lucy Saw Her Mother)

Lucy stared at Elena.
Children understand faces before explanations.
She had seen photographs.
Portraits.
Videos Vittorio sometimes played when he believed she was asleep.
She knew the woman.
"Mommy?"
Elena's entire body shook.
"Lucy."
Bianca lost focus for one second.
That was enough.
Lucy pulled free.
Vittorio crossed the distance and grabbed her.
Police moved.
Marcus tried to run.
He made it three steps.
Daniel, newly freed and extremely angry, blocked the exit.
Marcus stopped.
Bianca did not resist.
She simply stared at Elena.
"You were supposed to forget."
Elena looked at her.
"I remembered enough."
Bianca laughed.
It sounded broken.
"You don't know what happened."
"I know you stood beside my hospital bed."
Bianca's face changed.
Police heard it.
So did the trust officer.
So did Nora, who was recording.
Bianca realized too late.
Vittorio held Lucy against his chest.
Elena approached slowly.
Lucy reached toward her.
Vittorio lowered her.
Mother and daughter looked at each other.
Elena touched Lucy's cheek.
Lucy asked the question that destroyed everyone watching.
"Did you go away because you didn't want me?"
Elena's face crumpled.
"No."
She pulled Lucy close.
"No, baby. Never."
Lucy wrapped her arms around Elena's neck.
Vittorio looked away.
Even Daniel did.
Bianca was handcuffed.
Marcus began shouting for an attorney.
Police separated them.
For the first time in years, the Romano family left a building together.
Not healed.
Not whole.
But together.
The next days were overwhelming.
Elena returned to a hospital for independent evaluation.
Her fraudulent guardianship was suspended.
Marcus and Bianca faced an expanding investigation.
Search warrants revealed records far beyond what Nora had found.
Bank transfers.
Emails.
Medical instructions.
Payments to the accident recovery contractor.
Messages discussing Elena's sedation.
One message from Bianca to Marcus, written two years earlier, became central.
If she remembers the child, increase the dose.
Vittorio read it once.
Then he left the room and vomited.
Emma remained at the mansion caring for Lucy.
Elena could not return home immediately.
She needed treatment.
Stability.
Time.
Lucy visited her every day.
At first she asked the same question repeatedly.
"Are you staying?"
Elena always answered.
"Yes."
Vittorio struggled differently.
He had mourned a wife who was alive.
He had begun loving someone involved in destroying her.
Guilt became a constant companion.
Elena saw it.
One afternoon she asked him to sit beside her.
"You didn't know."
"I should have."
"How?"
"I brought Bianca into our house."
"After you believed I was dead."
"I let her near Lucy."
Elena's expression hardened.
"Then protect Lucy now. Don't waste time punishing yourself for what they did."
He looked at her.
She had changed.
So had he.
Neither knew what their marriage was anymore.
But they knew they were parents.
For now, that was enough.
Bianca's attorney began fighting aggressively.
He argued that Bianca had been manipulated by Marcus.
Marcus's attorney argued the opposite.
Their alliance collapsed immediately.
Each blamed the other.
That helped prosecutors.
But one problem remained.
The most serious charge connected to Elena's car accident required proof that the crash had been intentionally caused.
The original vehicle had been destroyed after investigation.
Physical evidence was gone.
Bianca denied touching the car.
Marcus denied everything.
Then Emma remembered something.
The forty minute recording.
The video she had been filming on the day of the dog bowl.
Vittorio had never watched it from the beginning.
He had only seen the humiliation.
Emma had avoided explaining why she started recording that morning.
Not because she was hiding wrongdoing.
Because she had promised someone confidentiality.
Now that person contacted her again.
Kelly Morris.
The former Ridgehaven nurse.
Kelly asked to meet privately.
At the meeting she brought a small external drive.
"What is this?" Nora asked.
Kelly looked at Elena.
"Three years of deleted security archives."
Everyone went silent.
Kelly explained that Ridgehaven automatically backed up corridor cameras.
Marcus had ordered several sections deleted after certain visits.
Kelly, already suspicious, had copied them.
She was too afraid to come forward.
Until Lucy was taken.
The footage showed Bianca visiting Elena seventeen times before she ever supposedly met Vittorio.
It showed Marcus entering treatment rooms.
It showed doctors receiving envelopes.
And one clip showed Bianca arguing with Elena.
There was no audio.
But Elena pointed directly at Bianca.
Then at a document.
Then Bianca leaned close and said something.
A lip reading expert later interpreted the words.
You should have died in the car.
It was powerful.
But still not proof of sabotage.
Then Kelly opened one final file.
Not video.
Audio.
A recording made accidentally through a nurse station intercom.
Marcus's voice.
Bianca's voice.
And one sentence.
Marcus said, "You cut the brake line. You don't get to blame me because she survived."
Bianca answered.
"I did what we agreed."
The room became still.
Vittorio closed his eyes.
Justice was finally possible.
But Emma noticed Elena staring at the drive.
Not relieved.
Afraid.
"There's something else," Elena whispered.
Vittorio looked at her.
"What?"
Elena's hands trembled.
"Bianca didn't want me dead because of the money."
"What do you mean?"
"That was part of it."
"Then why?"
May you like
Elena looked at Lucy playing across the room.
"Because I knew who Marcus really was."
