Chapter 4 - The Marriage Certificate Dated Three Years Too Early)

The document should not have existed.
Nora obtained a copy through a former Ridgehaven administrator.
It listed Bianca Moretti as Bianca Romano.
Spouse of Vittorio Romano.
The signature was dated three years earlier.
Six weeks after Elena's accident.
Vittorio had not even met Bianca until nearly two years later.
Emma stared at the copy.
"It's forged."
"Obviously," Nora said. "But it was used as part of a guardianship petition."
"How?"
"Someone created a fictional family structure. Elena was represented as mentally incapacitated, abandoned, and without reachable relatives. Marcus was designated financial guardian. Bianca was listed as the wife of Elena's former husband."
Daniel looked disgusted.
"They built a paperwork cage around her."
Nora nodded.
"And someone inside the court system accepted it."
The scheme was no longer about an accident.
It was organized.
Expensive.
Patient.
Nora traced additional payments.
Judicial clerks.
Medical contractors.
A private ambulance company.
An insurance examiner.
Each had received money from entities connected to Hale Meridian.
Emma finally asked the question none of them wanted to voice.
"Why would Marcus do this?"
Nora slid another document across the table.
Elena's trust.
Before her disappearance, Elena controlled a substantial inheritance from her grandfather.
Most of it would eventually pass to Lucy.
But Elena had also held voting shares in Romano Meridian Development, one of Vittorio's largest private companies.
Upon Elena's legal death, those shares transferred temporarily into a family trust controlled by Vittorio until Lucy turned twenty five.
If Elena was alive but legally incapacitated, a court appointed guardian could potentially exercise certain rights on her behalf.
Marcus had been quietly trying to do exactly that.
But the signatures required to restructure the Romano family holdings could not be obtained while Lucy's guardianship remained solely with Vittorio.
Bianca was the missing piece.
Marriage to Vittorio would give her standing inside the family.
Not automatic control.
But leverage.
Access.
Influence.
And if something happened to Vittorio, potentially much more.
Emma's stomach twisted.
"Are they planning to hurt him?"
"We don't know," Nora said.
Daniel did not look convinced.
They agreed Vittorio had to be told.
That evening they arranged to meet him privately.
But Bianca changed the schedule.
She surprised Vittorio with an engagement dinner at the mansion.
Guests arrived.
Music filled the terrace.
Lucy wore a floral dress and followed her father everywhere.
Emma could not pull Vittorio away without attracting attention.
Marcus appeared shortly after eight.
He saw Emma.
Smiled.
And tapped his jacket pocket.
Emma's phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
NOT TONIGHT.
She looked across the room.
Marcus raised his champagne glass.
He knew.
Somehow he knew about their investigation.
Emma went to Daniel.
"We've been compromised."
Daniel immediately checked the private security channel.
Two external cameras were offline.
Then the fire alarm sounded.
Guests turned toward the ceiling.
Staff began moving.
Bianca acted surprised.
Daniel was not.
He went straight toward Lucy.
So did Emma.
But Marcus reached her first.
He crouched.
"Come on, princess. Your daddy wants you outside."
Lucy hesitated.
Emma shouted.
"Lucy, stay there."
Marcus stood.
His smile vanished.
Daniel stepped between them.
"Move away from the child."
Vittorio appeared.
"What is happening?"
Finally.
Emma thought.
Now.
She reached for her phone.
Bianca suddenly screamed from the terrace.
A decorative heater had fallen.
Guests panicked.
Vittorio turned.
Only for seconds.
But when Emma looked back, Marcus was gone.
So was Lucy.
The entire mansion erupted.
Vittorio became a different man.
Doors were locked.
Security teams spread through the property.
Vehicles were stopped at the gates.
Bianca cried dramatically.
"This is my fault. I should have watched her."
Emma looked at her.
The performance was almost perfect.
Almost.
Then Emma heard something through her phone.
A faint sound.
The hidden camera from Lucy's stuffed rabbit was still transmitting to the monitoring application Daniel had installed.
A child's breathing.
Emma turned up the volume.
Then Lucy whispered.
"Mr. Marcus, why are we in Mommy's room?"
Emma froze.
Mommy's room.
Elena's old bedroom suite had been sealed since her death.
Vittorio rarely entered it.
Emma ran upstairs.
Daniel followed.
The door was locked.
Vittorio came behind them.
"What is this?"
Emma did not answer.
Daniel forced the door.
Inside, Lucy stood near the window.
Marcus was beside an open wall safe.
He had not been kidnapping her.
He had used her.
A small biometric lockbox sat on Elena's desk.
It required a Romano family fingerprint to activate its backup access.
Lucy had been brought there to open it.
Marcus stepped away.
Vittorio looked from him to Lucy.
Then to the documents scattered across the desk.
One was an old letter in Elena's handwriting.
Vittorio picked it up.
The date was two days before her accident.

The first sentence changed everything.
Vittorio, if anything happens to me, do not trust Marcus Hale.
