Chapter 12 - The Video Played Without Sound)

The prosecution did not begin with Elena's accident.
They did not begin with financial crimes.
They began with Lucy.
The courtroom monitors turned on.
The video played without sound for the first thirty seconds.
Bianca standing above a four year old child.
Marcus smiling.
Lucy kneeling.
The dog bowl on the floor.
Jurors watched.
No one moved.
Then the sound began.
Bianca's voice filled the courtroom.
"Eat, you little brat. That's where you belong."
Vittorio stared straight ahead.
He had seen it before.
That did not make it easier.
Emma testified first.
The defense attacked her.
"Ms. Clark, you secretly recorded your employer's private home."
"Yes."
"You searched Ms. Moretti's personal belongings."
"Yes."
"You withheld information from Mr. Romano."
"Temporarily."
"So you made yourself investigator, judge, and surveillance operator."
Emma looked at the attorney.
"No. I was a housekeeper who realized a child was being mistreated and her dead mother might be alive."
The courtroom became silent.
The attorney changed direction.
Elena testified later.
She walked slowly.
Vittorio watched the jury see her not as a file or photograph, but a real woman.
The prosecutor asked about Ridgehaven.
Elena described waking confused.
Being told her memories were unreliable.
Being told Vittorio had moved on.
Being told Lucy was safe but unavailable.
"Did you ask to see your daughter?"
"Every time I remembered her."
"What were you told?"
"That there was no daughter."
The prosecutor paused.
"And did you believe them?"
"Sometimes."
Her voice broke.
"That was the worst part."
Bianca looked down.
Marcus did not.
Harold Vane watched Elena with no visible emotion.
Then came the audio recording.
Marcus's voice.
You cut the brake line.
Bianca's response.
I did what we agreed.
The defense objected.
Authentication was argued.
Experts testified.
The recording was admitted.
For the first time Bianca seemed to understand she might never walk free.
Marcus's attorney immediately attempted to distance him.
Harold's lawyers argued he never ordered violence.
Then the ledger appeared.
Project Marriage.
The prosecution displayed the timeline.
Vittorio felt physically exposed as strangers examined the architecture of his personal life.
Each dinner.
Each gift.
Each emotional milestone reduced to a plan.
Bianca finally took the stand against her attorney's advice.
She believed she could charm a jury.
Vittorio recognized the confidence.
He had once mistaken it for strength.
The prosecutor asked, "Did you know Elena Romano was alive when you began dating her husband?"
Bianca hesitated.
"Yes."
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
"Did Vittorio Romano know?"
"No."
"Did Lucy Romano know?"
"No."
"Did you tell Lucy that her mother abandoned her?"
Bianca looked toward the jury.
"I was trying to help her accept reality."
"The reality was that her mother was imprisoned in a facility your associates controlled."
"I didn't control the facility."
"Did you visit Elena there?"
"Yes."
"Seventeen times?"
Bianca swallowed.
"Possibly."
"Did you tell Elena she should have died in the car?"
"I don't remember."
The prosecutor played video.
Bianca's lips formed the words.
Then the audio about the brake line played again.
Bianca's composure disappeared.
"Marcus said things when he was angry."
"Did you cut Elena Romano's brake line?"
"No."
"You said, I did what we agreed."
"I was referring to something else."
"What?"
Bianca had no answer.
Then the prosecutor placed a photograph on screen.
A gas station camera image recovered through the ledger.
Bianca purchasing a specific cutting tool the night before Elena's accident.
Another image showed her vehicle near Elena's parking garage.
Another showed Marcus meeting Harold the following morning.
The scheme became impossible to explain away.
Bianca began blaming Marcus.
Marcus shouted from the defense table.
"You liar."
The judge ordered silence.
Harold remained still.
Until the prosecution revealed Antonio Romano's case.
A newly located former medical examiner testified that Harold had pressured him after Antonio's death.
The original blood sample had been labeled contaminated and destroyed.
But a preserved tissue sample was recently located in archived evidence.
Testing found a cardiac medication Antonio had never been prescribed.
Harold finally reacted.
Barely.
His jaw tightened.
The prosecutor noticed.
So did Vittorio.
The case was no longer only about Elena.
It was about two decades of calculated predation.
The trial lasted seven weeks.
At the end, the jury left to deliberate.
Lucy knew none of the details.
She spent the afternoon baking cookies with Elena.
Vittorio sat beside his phone.
Hours passed.

Then the call came.
Verdict reached.
