Chapter 9 - The Second Envelope
Daniel returned to the office just before noon.
Claire was waiting.
"You said there was more."
"There is."
He handed her another envelope.
Claire hesitated.
"Why are you giving me everything one piece at a time?"
"Because if I gave you everything now, you wouldn't believe it."
She opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Claire recognized the location.
The Carter family's private club.
Ethan was standing beside several executives.
One of them was a man Claire had never met.
She turned the photograph over.
A date was written on the back.
The date was six months before Claire had married Ethan.
"Who is he?"
Daniel looked at the photograph.
"That's what we're trying to find out."
Claire looked at him.
"You don't know?"
"No."
"Then why does Ethan know him?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"What?"
Claire pointed at the photograph.
"Ethan isn't looking at him like a stranger."
Daniel took the photograph.
He studied it carefully.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
"Yes."
A pause.
Daniel's eyes hardened.
"How long?"
Another pause.
"Understood."
He hung up.
Claire stood.
"What happened?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Someone entered the archive."
"Who?"
"We don't know."
"Did they take something?"
Daniel nodded.
"One file."
Claire felt a chill.
"Which file?"
