Chapter 7 - Claire's File

Claire sat across from Rebecca.
"Why me?"
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
Daniel nodded.
Rebecca opened another folder.
"This concerns you."
Claire frowned.
"Me?"
"Your professional record."
Claire looked confused.
"I haven't worked in finance."
"No."
Rebecca slid a document toward her.
"You worked in corporate compliance."
Claire stared.
"That's not exactly accurate."
"You resigned after Ethan asked you to."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"How do you know that?"
"Because your resignation was unusual."
Claire remembered.
Two years earlier, she had discovered discrepancies in a report Ethan had asked her to review.
She had questioned him.
He had told her she did not understand the industry.
Then he had persuaded her to resign.
At the time, she believed she had made a mistake.
Now Rebecca showed her the same documents.
Except there were notes attached.
Claire read them.
Her breathing slowed.
"I was right."
Daniel nodded.
"You were."
She looked at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you needed to discover the truth yourself."
Claire looked down.
A strange mixture of anger and relief filled her.
She had spent years believing she was incapable.
Maybe she had simply been surrounded by people who benefited from her believing that.
Rebecca closed the folder.
"There is more."
Claire looked up.
"What?"
Rebecca pushed one final document across the table.
"Your resignation was used as part of a larger transaction."
Claire stared at the signature.
Her signature.
Then she noticed something.
The date.
It was different from the date she remembered signing.
She looked at Daniel.
"Someone changed this."
May you like
Daniel nodded.
"That's why we're here."
