Chapter 15 - The Door That Has Not Opened

The city was still dark when Claire and Daniel reached the old property.
The building looked abandoned from the outside.
Dust covered the windows.
The iron gate stood open.
Claire stepped out of the car.
"Who is inside?"
Daniel looked toward the building.
"I don't know."
"You said nobody knew this place existed."
"I was wrong."
They approached the entrance.
The door was unlocked.
Inside, the air smelled of dust and old wood.
Claire's footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Daniel followed closely.
"Stay behind me."
Claire shook her head.
"Not anymore."
They reached the main room.
A single lamp was on.
A table stood in the center.
On it was a familiar black envelope.
Claire approached.
Daniel stopped her.
"Wait."
He examined the room.
Nothing moved.
No sound.
Then a speaker crackled somewhere above them.
A voice came through.
"Claire."
She froze.
She knew that voice.
But she could not understand why.
Daniel looked upward.
"Show yourself."
The voice laughed.
"Not yet."
Claire stepped toward the table.
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because you deserve to know what your husband was protecting."
Claire looked at Daniel.
"Was Ethan protecting something?"
Daniel's expression remained unreadable.
The voice continued.
"And what your brother was hiding."
Claire's eyes narrowed.
"What did Daniel hide?"
Silence.
Then a projector suddenly illuminated the far wall.
A photograph appeared.
Their father.
Standing beside Victor Hale.
Beside him was another person.
Claire stared.
She did not recognize the person.
Daniel did.
His face went completely still.
Claire turned toward him.
"Who is that?"
Daniel said nothing.
The projector changed.
Another photograph.
Then another.
Documents appeared.
Dates.
Signatures.
Company names.
And finally, a single page.
Claire stepped closer.
At the bottom was her father's signature.
Above it was a clause.
Claire read the first sentence.
Her breathing stopped.
"Daniel..."
He looked at her.
"I wanted to tell you."
"You knew?"
"Not everything."
"Then what did you know?"
Daniel took a step toward her.
Before he could answer, the lights went out.
Complete darkness.
Claire heard a door close somewhere behind them.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Coming closer.
Daniel whispered,
"Claire, don't move."
She heard the click of another light.
A narrow beam appeared at the far end of the hallway.
A silhouette stood there.
The person did not enter.
They simply watched.
Then a voice said,
"You finally came."
Claire's heart raced.
Daniel stepped in front of her.
"Who are you?"
The silhouette moved closer.
Just enough for Claire to see one detail.
A ring.
A ring she had seen before.
Not on Ethan.
Not on Daniel.
On someone she had believed was dead.
Claire's face went pale.
The figure stopped.
"You want the truth about your marriage?"
A pause.
"Then ask your brother what happened the night your father died."
Daniel's expression changed.
Claire slowly turned toward him.
"Daniel?"
He did not answer.
The figure disappeared into the darkness.
A door slammed.
Claire stared at her brother.
"What happened that night?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
For years, he had protected one secret.
Now the secret was standing between them.
And somewhere in the darkness, someone had just proven that the story Claire thought she knew about her family had never been the real story at all.

Outside, the first hint of sunrise began to appear over Manhattan.
But inside the old house, the night was far from over.
