Chapter 12 - The Person Pulling the Strings

Ethan returned to his apartment.
The lights were off.
He turned them on.
A folder sat on the table.
He had not left it there.
He approached slowly.
Inside was a copy of the same document Daniel had given him.
Except this version contained additional pages.
Ethan read them.
His face went pale.
There were transactions.
Names.
Dates.
Companies.
One name appeared repeatedly.
His own.
But beneath it was another name.
Claire Carter.
Ethan whispered,
"No."
A note was attached.
You used her signature.
Ethan sat down.
He remembered every document.
Every time he had told Claire something was routine.
Every time he had asked her to sign.
Every time she had trusted him.
He suddenly understood.
Someone had been using him.
But who?
His phone rang.
He answered.
No one spoke.
Then a voice finally came through.
"You should have listened to your wife."
Ethan stood.
"Who are you?"
"You'll know soon."
"What do you want?"
"Nothing."
"Then why are you doing this?"
The caller paused.
"Because someone needs to pay."
Ethan's heart raced.
"Daniel?"
"No."
"Then who?"
The caller laughed softly.
"You still think this is about Daniel."
The line went dead.
Ethan stared at the phone.
May you like
Then he looked at the documents.
For the first time, he wondered whether Daniel had actually been trying to protect him from someone else.
