Chapter 2 - The Man They Never Saw

Claire followed Daniel into the hallway.
"Daniel."
He stopped.
She hurried toward him.
"What did you just do?"
"What I should have done years ago."
Claire stared at him.
"You told me you fixed cars."
"I do."
"Daniel."
He looked at her.
She recognized that expression.
The same expression he had worn when their father died.
The same expression he wore whenever something was too serious to explain.
"You lied to me."
"I protected you."
"From what?"
"From becoming part of this."
Claire glanced toward the dining room.
Through the partially closed doors, she could hear Ethan arguing with his father.
"What is that document?"
Daniel remained silent.
"Please."
He finally sighed.
"Claire, you trusted Ethan."
She looked away.
"I did."
"Then you need to understand something."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Tonight was not the beginning."
Claire frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Ethan has been building a story about you for years."
"What story?"
"That you are financially irresponsible. That you depend on him. That you have no professional influence. That your family has no meaningful connections."
Claire's face tightened.
"Why?"
"Because he needed everyone to believe you were powerless."
She stared at him.
Daniel continued.
"He has been preparing for something."
Claire suddenly remembered several strange conversations.
Ethan asking about her bank accounts.
Ethan insisting that certain documents be signed quickly.
Ethan asking whether she still spoke to Daniel.
Ethan laughing whenever she mentioned her brother's business.
"What is he preparing for?"
Daniel looked toward the dining room.
"Not here."
"Then where?"
"Tomorrow."
Claire shook her head.
"I need answers tonight."
Daniel looked at her carefully.
"Tonight you need to sleep."
"I don't think I can."
"You don't have to."
He reached into his coat and handed her a small envelope.
Claire looked at it.
"What is this?"
"Do not open it until you are alone."
She stared at him.
"Daniel, you're scaring me."
"I'm not trying to."
"Then tell me the truth."
Daniel paused.
"The truth is that Ethan made one very serious mistake."
"What?"
"He assumed the only person sitting at that table who mattered was him."
Claire said nothing.
Daniel walked away.
She stood in the hallway holding the envelope.
Behind her, Ethan's voice rose.
"You don't understand what you're looking at."
His father answered.
"I understand enough."
Claire slowly turned toward the dining room.

For the first time in years, she saw something she had never seen in Ethan's face.
Fear.
