Chapter 5 - The Meeting

The black sedan stopped outside a private office building downtown.
Claire looked up.
There was no giant company name.
No flashy sign.
Only a discreet brass plaque beside the entrance.
Brooks Holdings.
Claire stared.
"You own this?"
Daniel shook his head.
"Part of it."
"How much?"
"Enough."
She frowned.
"That isn't an answer."
"It's the only answer I can give you right now."
They entered.
Inside, the atmosphere was completely different from the Carter family mansion.
Quiet.
Controlled.
Professional.
People greeted Daniel with respect.
Claire looked around.
"You told me you worked with cars."
"I told you I owned a repair shop."
"You never told me this."
"You never asked."
Claire shook her head.
"I thought you were struggling."
"I was."
"When?"
Daniel smiled.
"Before Dad died."
They entered an executive conference room.
A woman in a gray suit stood beside the window.
"Ms. Carter."
Claire looked at her.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Rebecca Shaw. General Counsel."
Daniel sat down.
Rebecca placed several folders on the table.
Claire stared.
"What is all this?"
Rebecca opened the first folder.
"Ethan Carter's professional history."
The second.
"His corporate transactions."
The third.
"His private financial relationships."
Claire's face tightened.
"Why did you investigate my husband?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"I didn't."
Claire looked at him.
"Then who did?"
Daniel said nothing.
May you like
Rebecca closed the folder.
"That is the question."
