Chapter 9 - Maddie's Most Dangerous Signature)

Jonathan selected the meeting location carefully.

An abandoned Carter Manufacturing plant outside Briar Glen.

One of the first properties Richard and Edward Vale had owned together.

Symbolism mattered to men like Jonathan.

Maddie understood that.

So she used it against him.

At nine the next morning, she arrived alone.

At least, she appeared alone.

A tracking transmitter was sewn into her jacket.

Daniel Harlow's team waited three miles away.

Federal agents surrounded the broader area.

Lena monitored audio through a concealed microphone.

Maddie carried a leather folder.

Inside was a signed Northstar beneficiary authorization.

It looked real.

It was real.

What Jonathan did not know was that Caleb had modified the underlying trust infrastructure twelve minutes earlier.

Any transfer exceeding fifty thousand dollars would move into a temporary compliance escrow rather than its intended destination.

Jonathan could initiate the theft.

But he could not complete it.

The factory doors opened.

Jonathan Vale walked out.

He looked exactly as Maddie remembered him from the investor dinner.

Polished.

Calm.

Forgettable.

The kind of man who survived by appearing less dangerous than he was.

"Maddie Carter."

"Jonathan Vale."

He smiled.

"I prefer Julian."

"I prefer people who don't kidnap my brother."

"Semantics."

"Where is Ethan?"

"Inside."

"And Rachel?"

"Inside."

Maddie held up the folder.

"First them."

Jonathan shook his head.

"First the authorization."

"No."

A second man appeared behind him.

Then Ethan.

His hands were bound.

Rachel followed.

Maddie's throat tightened.

Ethan looked exhausted.

"Maddie, don't."

Jonathan pressed a gun against Ethan's back.

"Family loyalty. Very moving."

Maddie opened the folder.

"You release them, I sign final confirmation."

Jonathan smiled.

"You already signed."

"That signature only activates beneficiary review."

His expression changed slightly.

"You need the second authorization for transfer."

It was a lie.

But Jonathan did not know enough about the trust mechanics to be certain.

He studied her.

Then pushed Ethan forward.

"Rachel stays."

Maddie shook her head.

"Both."

"Maddie."

"Both."

Jonathan stared.

Then nodded.

Rachel and Ethan were shoved forward.

They walked toward Maddie.

Twenty feet.

Fifteen.

Ten.

Then Rachel suddenly stopped.

Her eyes widened.

"Maddie, run."

Gunfire exploded.

Jonathan's men were not shooting at Maddie.

They were shooting toward the tree line.

Someone had discovered the federal perimeter.

Agents returned fire.

Daniel shouted through Maddie's earpiece.

"Down!"

Maddie grabbed Ethan.

They hit the ground.

Rachel ran toward them.

Jonathan seized her from behind.

He pressed a pistol beneath her chin.

"Stop!"

Everything froze.

Jonathan dragged Rachel backward.

Maddie stood slowly.

"Let her go."

"Give me the authorization."

"You already lost."

Jonathan laughed.

"You think this is about twelve million dollars?"

Maddie's stomach dropped.

"What?"

"You still don't understand what Richard built."

Sirens approached.

Jonathan backed toward the factory.

Rachel struggled.

He whispered something into her ear.

Her face changed.

Then he shoved her forward.

Rachel fell.

Jonathan disappeared through the doors.

Agents rushed after him.

Maddie ran to Rachel.

"What did he say?"

Rachel looked terrified.

"He said Northstar isn't a fund."

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

Ethan grabbed Maddie's arm.

"We need to leave."

A massive explosion tore through the far side of the factory.

Windows shattered.

Flames erupted.

Maddie covered her head.

Agents shouted.

Daniel pulled them behind a concrete barrier.

The factory burned for six hours.

Three bodies were recovered.

None belonged to Jonathan Vale.

The authorization folder was found burned near the entrance.

By evening, federal investigators declared Jonathan a fugitive.

Ethan was taken to the hospital.

Rachel entered protective custody.

And Maddie finally confronted her brother.

"Why did you send those messages?"

Ethan stared at the ceiling.

"Because Jonathan had Rachel."

"Why didn't you tell me she was alive?"

"I didn't know until six weeks ago."

He explained.

Rachel had contacted him secretly.

She had escaped Harbor Strategic but believed Jonathan was watching everyone connected to Maddie.

She discovered Bradley was working with him.

Ethan tried to help her collect evidence.

Jonathan caught them.

"Did you authorize the account transfers?"

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Maddie felt the betrayal even though she understood.

"He threatened Rachel?"

"And you."

"Me?"

Ethan looked at her.

"He had someone inside Blue Meridian."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Maddie's blood went cold.

Ethan continued.

"Jonathan always knew what we were doing."

"Caleb?"

"No."

"Nora?"

"I don't think so."

"Then who?"

Ethan looked toward the hospital door.

"I only heard a name once."

"What name?"

"Someone called the person Atlas."

Maddie stared.

"Atlas?"

May you like

Ethan nodded.

"And Jonathan said Atlas was closer to you than Bradley ever was."
