Chapter 2 - The Contract Hidden Behind the Birthday Toast)

At nine fifteen, Bradley climbed onto the small stage beside the pool.
He was already drunk enough for his voice to carry too loudly.
"Everybody shut up for a second."
The jazz quartet stopped.
Guests turned toward him.
Barbara beamed.
Bradley lifted his glass.
"I just want to thank everyone for coming."
Applause followed.
Bradley continued.
"And obviously I want to thank my beautiful wife."
Several relatives exchanged amused looks.
Maddie stood near the back of the patio.
Bradley gestured toward her.
"Maddie's always been very ambitious."
A few cousins laughed.
"Sometimes too ambitious."
More laughter.
Maddie saw Barbara whisper something to the woman beside her.
Bradley continued.
"But marriage is about compromise. It's about knowing when to stop chasing little personal dreams and start supporting the family that actually matters."
Maddie's jaw tightened.
He knew.
The anonymous message had been correct.
Bradley knew something.
Then Barbara produced a leather folder.
Maddie's stomach dropped.
Bradley waved her forward.
"Come here, sweetheart."
Every instinct told Maddie not to move.
Instead, she walked toward him.
Bradley placed an arm around her waist.
His grip was harder than necessary.
Barbara opened the folder.
Inside were corporate documents.
"What's this?" Maddie asked.
Bradley's smile widened.
"A birthday gift."
"For you?"
"For us."
He handed her a pen.
Maddie glanced at the first page.
MARITAL ASSET CONSOLIDATION AGREEMENT.
She nearly laughed.
The document would transfer voting authority over several jointly declared assets into a trust controlled by Bradley.
Blue Meridian was listed among them.
Bradley had discovered her company was far larger than she claimed.
But he had made a critical mistake.
Blue Meridian had never been marital property.
Maddie created the corporation eighteen months before meeting Bradley.
Her ownership interests were protected by a prenuptial agreement Barbara herself had insisted upon.
Barbara apparently had forgotten that part.
Maddie looked at her husband.
"Where did you get this?"
"Lawyers."
"What lawyers?"
"Does it matter?"
"It matters to me."
Bradley's smile vanished for half a second.
Then returned.
"Don't make tonight difficult."
Barbara stepped closer.
"Just sign it, Maddie."
Maddie looked at her.
"Why?"
Barbara lowered her voice.
"Because you've spent six years benefiting from this family."
Maddie almost admired the audacity.
"Benefiting?"
"You live in our home. You attend our events. You use our name."
Maddie glanced toward the mansion.
Barbara continued.
"The least you can do is stop hiding assets from your husband."
So that was it.
They knew Blue Meridian existed.
But they did not know what it owned.
Not yet.
Maddie returned the pen.
"No."
The temperature around them changed.
Bradley laughed.
It was forced.
"She's kidding."
"No."
Barbara's lips tightened.
Bradley pulled Maddie aside.
His hand closed around her elbow.
"Sign the damn paper."
"No."
"You think I don't know what your company is worth?"
Maddie said nothing.
"I know about the government contracts."
Still nothing.
"I know about the warehouses."
Maddie's heartbeat accelerated.
Bradley leaned closer.
"And I know you're planning something."
"Then why don't you tell me what?"
His eyes hardened.
"You've been meeting attorneys."
"That's not illegal."
"You're my wife."
"Also not illegal."
His fingers dug deeper into her arm.
Maddie looked down.
Bradley released her.
"You're making a mistake."
Maddie met his gaze.
"No. I made my mistake six years ago."
For the first time that evening, Bradley looked uncertain.
Then Barbara called for photographs.
The moment dissolved.
But Maddie knew the party had changed.
This was no longer a birthday celebration.
It was an ambush.
Twenty minutes later, Maddie went upstairs.
She locked herself inside the guest bathroom and called Nora.
"He knows about the company."
"How much?"
"Enough to prepare a fraudulent marital transfer."
Silence.
Then Nora said, "Leave."
"Not yet."
"Maddie."
"I need to know how he found out."
"You already have enough evidence."
"No. Somebody inside Blue Meridian gave him information."
That was the detail frightening Maddie most.
Only twelve people knew the company's complete ownership structure.
Three were attorneys.
Two were directors.
Four were senior financial officers.
One was Maddie's chief operating officer.
One was Maddie.
And the final person was her younger brother, Ethan.
Someone had betrayed her.
A knock sounded.
"Maddie?"
Bradley's voice.
She ended the call.
"One minute."
Another knock.
Harder.
"Maddie, open the door."
She slipped the phone into her purse.
When she opened the door, Bradley stood there smiling.
Behind him were his cousins Aaron and Derek.
Both had been drinking heavily.
Bradley extended his hand.
"Come downstairs."
"Why?"
"Family tradition."
Maddie looked at the cousins.
Aaron grinned.
"You're gonna love it."
Maddie knew immediately that she would not.
And fifteen minutes later, standing beside the freezing swimming pool with Bradley's relatives surrounding her, she realized exactly what they had planned.
May you like
Humiliation.
They just did not know they had chosen the wrong night.
