Chapter 11 - Atlas Was Sitting at Her Own Table)

Blue Meridian entered emergency lockdown.

Caleb isolated Northstar.

Daniel Harlow sealed the executive floors.

Every employee with administrator-level credentials was detained for questioning.

Maddie sat in the command room watching access logs.

Her credentials had been used from inside the building.

Not remotely.

Floor twenty-two.

Executive wing.

At ten fourteen that morning.

Maddie had been in a divorce hearing across town.

Someone had physically entered her office.

Daniel reviewed security footage.

Nobody.

The hallway camera looped for exactly six minutes.

Professional.

Clean.

Then Caleb found a second access point.

The private board conference room.

Only seven people had keys.

Maddie.

Caleb.

Ethan.

Nora.

Two board members.

And Blue Meridian's chairman, Victor Lang.

Maddie stared at the name.

Victor had invested in Blue Meridian during its first year.

He had been her mentor.

He introduced her to government clients.

He attended her wedding.

He stood beside Maddie when her mother died.

He had once told Bradley privately that hurting Maddie would be the worst mistake of his life.

Atlas was closer to you than Bradley ever was.

Maddie called Victor.

No answer.

Daniel sent security to his residence.

Empty.

His office safe had been cleared.

Maddie felt something inside her break.

"No."

Caleb looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

"No."

Victor Lang had known Richard Carter.

That discovery came twenty minutes later.

Old Carter Manufacturing records listed a young chemical engineer named Victor Lang.

He worked on the contaminated site.

"He was there," Maddie whispered.

Nora read further.

Victor testified during the original investigation.

His statement helped clear Richard and Edward Vale of intentional wrongdoing.

The testimony had been false.

Maddie closed her eyes.

Everything connected.

Victor knew Richard.

Victor knew Northstar.

Years later he invested in Maddie's company.

Then Maddie's company anonymously acquired Carter debt.

Had that really been Maddie's decision?

She remembered Victor recommending distressed industrial debt as a diversification strategy.

He brought the Carter file to her.

At the time, she thought it was coincidence.

It had never been coincidence.

Victor had positioned her.

Years before she married Bradley.

The thought made Maddie feel sick.

"Why?"

Caleb asked.

Nora answered.

"Because Victor needed someone clean."

Someone unconnected to the old scandal.

Someone capable of buying the debt.

Someone who could eventually inherit Northstar's legal control.

Maddie had not stumbled into the Carter family's secret.

She had been guided toward it.

Her entire adult life suddenly felt contaminated.

Phone call.

Daniel answered.

"Victor?"

He listened.

Then handed the phone to Maddie.

"He's asking for you."

Maddie answered.

"Victor."

His voice sounded tired.

"I'm sorry."

She gripped the phone.

"Where are you?"

"Somewhere safe."

"You used me."

"Yes."

The honesty hurt more than denial.

"Since when?"

"Since before you met Bradley."

Maddie closed her eyes.

"Why?"

"Because Richard trusted me."

"You lied for him."

"I lied against him."

Maddie opened her eyes.

Victor explained.

Thirty years ago, Edward Vale ordered toxic waste records altered.

Richard wanted to expose him.

Victor was young.

Afraid.

Edward threatened his family.

Victor gave false testimony.

Richard took much of the blame publicly but secretly created Northstar.

For decades, Victor tried to repair the damage.

When Richard became sick, he gave Victor one instruction.

Protect Northstar.

"Then why involve me?"

"Because I was compromised."

"By Jonathan?"

"By Edward."

Maddie's blood went cold.

"Edward is alive?"

A pause.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

The man declared dead in Portugal was alive.

Jonathan's father.

The original architect of the cover-up.

Victor continued.

"Jonathan thinks he's serving his father."

"Isn't he?"

"No."

"Then what is happening?"

"Edward has been looking for one person."

"Who?"

"I don't know the name."

Maddie almost screamed.

"Victor."

"I know the patient code."

"What code?"

"Northstar Zero."

Caleb immediately searched.

No record.

Victor said, "Richard removed it from the digital system."

"What is Northstar Zero?"

"The first child born with the anomaly."

Maddie gripped the desk.

"And why does Edward want them?"

"Because that child proves the contamination was not accidental."

Silence.

"If Northstar Zero is found," Victor said, "Edward Vale can be tied directly to what happened."

"Where are you?"

Victor did not answer.

"Victor."

"I need to fix one thing first."

"You've had thirty years."

"I know."

The call ended.

Daniel started tracing.

Too late.

Then Caleb's monitor beeped.

A dormant file inside Northstar had opened.

No one touched it.

One line appeared.

ZERO LOCATED.

Below it was an address.

Maddie recognized the street.

Her childhood home.
