Chapter 7 - The Secret Barbara Kept for Thirty Years)

Barbara Carter did not appreciate police arriving at her temporary hotel suite at eleven in the morning.

She appreciated Maddie accompanying them even less.

"You are not entering my room."

Maddie walked past her.

"Technically Blue Meridian is paying for the room."

Barbara's face hardened.

Lena showed her the photograph.

"Where is Ethan Maddox?"

Barbara looked at it.

For one second, fear moved across her face.

Then disappeared.

"I have no idea."

"Rachel Pierce believed you did."

"I don't know Rachel Pierce."

Maddie stepped closer.

"Try again."

Barbara turned.

"You don't speak to me that way."

"Your son had my brother targeted by a woman who infiltrated my company."

"Bradley would never."

"I have photographs."

"You've always hated him."

Maddie stared.

That was so absurd she almost smiled.

"No, Barbara. That was my problem. I loved him."

Barbara looked away.

Lena asked another question.

"Do you know Harbor Strategic?"

"No."

"Greyshore Consulting?"

"No."

"Edward Vale?"

Barbara froze.

It lasted less than a second.

But Maddie saw it.

"So you know Edward."

Barbara sat down.

"I knew someone by that name years ago."

"How long ago?"

"Thirty years."

Lena opened her notebook.

"Tell us."

Barbara refused.

Then Maddie remembered something.

Richard Carter.

Bradley's father.

A man Maddie had never met.

He died two years before Maddie and Bradley became engaged.

Bradley spoke of him rarely.

Barbara spoke of him constantly.

Richard had built everything.

Richard had made the family respectable.

Richard had believed in loyalty.

Maddie suddenly asked, "Was Edward Vale involved with Richard?"

Barbara's eyes sharpened.

That was the answer.

Lena pressed.

"What did they do together?"

Barbara stood.

"This interview is over."

Maddie remained seated.

"What are you afraid of?"

Barbara laughed.

"You."

"No."

Maddie's voice stayed calm.

"You're afraid of something that existed before me."

Silence.

"Something Richard did."

Barbara's mouth tightened.

"And now it's coming back."

Barbara walked toward the window.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not elegant.

Not powerful.

Old.

"When Richard started Carter Manufacturing, he had partners."

"Edward Vale?"

"Among others."

"What happened?"

"Business happened."

"People don't hire surveillance firms thirty years later because business happened."

Barbara closed her eyes.

Richard Carter and Edward Vale had created an investment partnership before Carter Manufacturing became successful.

The partnership bought distressed industrial properties.

One was later discovered to contain severe chemical contamination.

Workers became ill.

Families sued.

Richard wanted to settle.

Edward wanted to hide the evidence.

According to Barbara, Richard eventually agreed.

Documents disappeared.

A witness was paid.

The property was sold through layered companies.

Carter Manufacturing survived.

Edward Vale disappeared overseas.

"And the debt?" Maddie asked.

Barbara stared at her.

"What debt?"

"The mansion. The company. The financial collapse after Richard became sick."

Barbara said nothing.

Maddie understood.

"It wasn't medical expenses."

Barbara lowered her eyes.

"Richard started paying the families privately."

Bradley had never known.

Richard secretly spent millions compensating victims.

He borrowed against everything.

The mansion.

Company shares.

Land.

When he died, the obligations remained.

Barbara covered the truth because she believed exposure would destroy the family name.

Then Maddie's anonymous investment company acquired the debt.

Without realizing it, Maddie had inherited the financial remains of a thirty-year-old crime.

Lena asked, "Where does Bradley fit?"

Barbara shook her head.

"He found Richard's records after his death."

"And?"

"He became obsessed with recovering the money Richard gave away."

Maddie stared.

Bradley had not merely been stealing to fund his lifestyle.

He had been searching for something.

"What money?"

Barbara hesitated.

"Edward Vale claimed Richard hid a reserve account."

"How much?"

"Forty million dollars."

Maddie felt the room shift.

Bradley believed Richard had hidden forty million dollars before his death.

He believed ownership information might be buried inside old Carter financing records now controlled by Blue Meridian.

That explained Rachel.

The infiltration.

The recovery server.

But not Ethan's disappearance.

"Where is Edward Vale now?"

Barbara looked toward Lena.

"I don't know."

Maddie showed her Rachel's photograph.

"Then why does Rachel think you know where Ethan is?"

Barbara's expression changed.

She whispered, "Because I received a call."

"When?"

"Yesterday morning."

"From whom?"

"A man."

"What did he say?"

Barbara's hands trembled.

"He said Richard's son had opened the wrong door."

"Bradley?"

"I thought so."

"What else?"

Barbara looked directly at Maddie.

"He said if the debt changed hands, the account would wake up."

Maddie's heartbeat slowed.

The debt had changed hands legally years ago.

But yesterday she activated enforcement.

Maybe that was what the caller meant.

"What account?"

Barbara shook her head.

"I don't know."

Her phone began vibrating on the table.

Unknown caller.

Nobody moved.

It rang again.

Lena activated recording equipment.

Barbara answered on speaker.

"Hello?"

A man's voice came through.

Calm.

Older.

"You finally told her."

Barbara turned white.

Maddie leaned forward.

"Who is this?"

The man laughed softly.

"Mrs. Carter."

Maddie said nothing.

"You bought a house."

The voice continued.

May you like

"But what you really bought was a graveyard."

Then the call ended.
