Chapter 8 - Forty Million Dollars That Never Existed)

The federal government entered the investigation that afternoon.
Financial crimes.
Interstate fraud.
Historical environmental liability.
Potential kidnapping.
By evening, Maddie's marriage had become the least complicated problem in her life.
She sat inside Nora's office looking at thirty-year-old corporate records projected across a wall.
Richard Carter's reserve account supposedly held forty million dollars.
But Caleb found no evidence the account had ever contained that much.
Instead, he found repeated transfers between Carter Manufacturing and an entity called Northstar Custodial Trust.
Nora pointed toward the transaction dates.
"Look."
Each transfer occurred shortly after a legal settlement involving contaminated property.
Maddie understood.
"The reserve account wasn't hidden wealth."
"No."
"It was compensation money."
Caleb nodded.
"Money Richard was hiding from Edward Vale."
Richard had not stolen forty million dollars.
He had quietly created a fund for victims and their families.
Some payments continued years after Richard's death.
Maddie looked at Barbara.
"You knew?"
Barbara sat silently.
"Some of it."
"Bradley thought this money belonged to him."
Barbara looked ashamed.
"He thought his father had robbed him."
Maddie laughed bitterly.
"His father was trying to make restitution."
"He never told Bradley."
"Would it have mattered?"
Barbara did not answer.
Lena entered carrying new information.
They had identified Edward Vale.
Age seventy-one.
Former attorney.
Former business partner of Richard Carter.
Officially dead.
The problem was that Edward Vale had supposedly died nine years ago in Portugal.
"Then who called Barbara?" Maddie asked.
Lena placed another photograph on the table.
A younger man.
Mid-forties.
Dark hair.
Expensive suit.
"Edward's son. Jonathan Vale."
Maddie recognized him.
Not by name.
By face.
She had seen him before.
At Blue Meridian.
"He was at our annual investor dinner."
Caleb looked closer.
"That's Julian Voss."
"No," Lena said. "Julian Voss doesn't exist."
Jonathan Vale had spent fifteen years using corporate identities to acquire companies connected to his father's former partners.
He was also the founder of Harbor Strategic.
The company Bradley hired to spy on Maddie.
"Bradley hired Edward Vale's son without knowing who he was?" Maddie asked.
Lena nodded.
"Looks that way."
That meant Bradley had thought he was using Harbor Strategic.
In reality, Jonathan had been using Bradley.
The pool party.
The forced contract.
The surveillance.
The recovery server.
All of it pushed Maddie toward activating the Carter debt.
Why?
Caleb found the answer buried inside the original acquisition agreement.
A dormant escrow protocol.
If Meridian ever assumed operational control of Carter Holdings, a restricted trust would automatically transfer beneficiary verification authority to the new controlling creditor.
Maddie stared.
"So by foreclosing..."
"You gained access to Northstar."
The room fell silent.
The forty-million-dollar fund had been hidden behind the Carter debt structure.
Bradley could never access it because Carter Holdings was technically the debtor.
But once Maddie activated creditor control, Blue Meridian became authorized to identify beneficiaries.
Jonathan needed Maddie to open the door.
Nora whispered, "The pool humiliation was engineered to make you angry enough to act immediately."
Maddie's stomach turned.
Bradley had willingly humiliated her.
But someone else had designed the circumstances.
"Where is the money now?"
Caleb opened another screen.
"That's the problem."
The fund should contain roughly forty-eight million dollars after decades of investments.
The current balance was twelve million.
Thirty-six million was missing.
"Who withdrew it?"
"No direct withdrawals."
"Then what?"
"Beneficiary payments."
Maddie leaned closer.
Thousands of small payments had been issued over the past fifteen years.
Names.
Addresses.
Trusts.
Scholarships.
Medical accounts.
At first glance they looked legitimate.
Then Caleb highlighted something.
"They all route through three administrative foundations."
"Owned by?"
"Vale-controlled entities."
Jonathan had been draining the victims' fund for years.
But he could not take the final twelve million without triggering ownership verification.
Now Maddie had triggered it for him.
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Lena nodded for her to answer.
Maddie put it on speaker.
"Hello?"
Jonathan Vale's voice.
"Congratulations."
"Where is my brother?"
"Safe."
"I want proof."
"Of course."
A video message arrived.
Ethan sat in a dim room.
Alive.
Bruised.
Rachel beside him.
Alive too.
Maddie's hand shook.
Jonathan continued.
"Now that we understand each other, I need a signature."
"No."
"You haven't heard the request."
"I don't care."
Jonathan sighed.
"Your brother does."
In the video, someone stepped behind Ethan.
A gun appeared beside his head.
Maddie stopped breathing.
Jonathan's voice became almost gentle.
"Tomorrow morning, Mrs. Carter."
"Where?"
"I'll tell you."
"If you hurt him..."
"You activated my inheritance."
"It isn't your inheritance."
Silence.
Then Jonathan laughed.
"That's exactly what Richard told my father."
The call ended.
Maddie stared at Ethan's frozen image.
Nora whispered, "You cannot give him the trust."
Maddie's eyes stayed on her brother.
"I know."
"Then what are you going to do?"
Maddie looked toward Caleb.
"Find me every weakness in Northstar."
Then toward Lena.
"Find me every weakness in Jonathan Vale."
May you like
Finally toward Daniel Harlow.
"And find me a way to make him believe he's already won."
