Aaron Carter refused to speak again until an attorney arrived.
It took four hours.
By sunrise, Maddie had been awake nearly twenty-six hours.
She sat in Blue Meridian's conference room while forensic technicians moved through the building.
Bradley called eleven times.
Maddie blocked him.
Barbara sent one message.
You have embarrassed this family enough.
Maddie deleted it.
At six thirty, Nora Bennett arrived carrying coffee and a change of clothes.
"You look terrible."
"Thank you."
"Professional assessment."
Maddie took the coffee.
"What happens with the estate?"
"Default remains active."
"And Bradley?"
"His access to all Carter-controlled operating accounts financed through Meridian is frozen pending audit."
"Good."
Nora sat beside her.
"You know this isn't just financial anymore."
"I know."
"Ethan's disappearance changes everything."
"I know."
"You cannot keep protecting Bradley."
Maddie looked through the conference-room glass.
"I stopped protecting him when he pushed me."
"No."
Nora's voice softened.
"You stopped pretending he deserved protection."
That hurt because it was true.
At seven fifteen, Lena entered.
"Aaron's talking."
They moved into a smaller room.
Aaron appeared by video from the station.
His face looked gray.
"My family can't know I'm telling you."
Lena said, "Your family already knows you were arrested inside Blue Meridian."
Aaron closed his eyes.
"Then I'm dead."
Maddie leaned forward.
"Where is Ethan?"
"I don't know."
"You said my brother wasn't the target."
"He wasn't."
"Then who was?"
Aaron looked directly at her.
"You."
Silence.
Bradley had hired Harbor Strategic to investigate Maddie.
Aaron claimed it began as an asset search.
Bradley believed Maddie was hiding money before filing for divorce.
But Harbor discovered something unexpected.
Blue Meridian owned the Carter debt.
Bradley panicked.
He approached Barbara.
Barbara panicked more.
They believed Maddie could take everything.
"So they decided to take Blue Meridian first?" Maddie asked.
Aaron nodded.
"The marital agreement was one part."
"And the hacked transfers?"
"Another."
"Who planned that?"
Aaron hesitated.
"A woman."
"Rachel Pierce?"
Aaron's face changed.
"How do you know that name?"
Maddie's pulse increased.
"Answer me."
"Rachel worked with Bradley."
"When?"
"Before Ethan ever met her."
Maddie stared.
Aaron continued.
"Bradley introduced them."
"No."
"He arranged for her to join Blue Meridian."
Maddie remembered.
Rachel had applied through an executive recruiter.
Or so Maddie had been told.
She became a systems architect.
Then she started dating Ethan.
They became engaged.
A year later Rachel vanished.
"What was her real job?"
Aaron swallowed.
"Finding the ownership documents."
Maddie felt physically ill.
Ethan had not accidentally fallen in love with someone involved in Bradley's scheme.
He had been targeted.
"What happened when she found them?"
"She wanted out."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
"Where is she now?"
Aaron looked terrified again.
"I thought she was dead."
Maddie stopped.
Lena leaned closer.
"Why?"
"Because Bradley said she had become a problem."
Aaron explained that eleven months ago Rachel contacted him secretly.
She wanted help leaving the state.
She claimed Bradley had threatened Ethan.
Aaron agreed to meet her.
Rachel never appeared.
Two days later, Bradley told him not to mention her again.
Then Ethan publicly announced the engagement had ended.
Maddie remembered Ethan's blank expression.
The dark circles beneath his eyes.
His refusal to answer questions.
"Did Bradley threaten my brother?"
Aaron nodded.
"With what?"
"I don't know."
Maddie stood.
She needed air.
Before leaving, she turned.
"Why were you at Blue Meridian last night?"
Aaron looked ashamed.
"Bradley told me to remove the recovery server."
"And you agreed."
"He had something on me."
"What?"
Aaron looked down.
"Money."
Maddie almost laughed.
Of course.
It always came back to money with the Carters.
Lena asked, "Where were you supposed to take the server?"
Aaron gave them an address.
An abandoned printing warehouse twelve miles north.
Police raided it within ninety minutes.
They found no Ethan.
No Rachel.
But they found photographs.
Hundreds.
Maddie.
Ethan.
Nora.
Caleb.
Daniel Harlow.
Blue Meridian executives.
Even Lena.
On one wall was a detailed timeline of Maddie's movements.
At the center was a photograph of the Carter estate.
A red circle had been drawn around the pool.
Beneath it were three words.
MAKE HER REACT.
Maddie stared at the words.
The humiliation had not been random.
The push into the pool had been designed to provoke her into activating the default.
Someone wanted her to seize the Carter assets.
Lena saw the realization.
"The party was bait."
Maddie nodded slowly.
"But why?"
A forensic technician called from the other side of the warehouse.
They followed him to a locked office.
Inside were financial records.
Property maps.
And a single photograph lying face down on a desk.
Maddie turned it over.
Rachel Pierce stood beside Ethan.
The photograph was recent.
Very recent.
In the background was a motel sign.
Maddie flipped the picture over.
A date had been written on the back.
Three days ago.
