THE NIGHT ELENA CRAWLED OUT / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Empty Cot

The cot in the basement had belonged to Rachel.

Amelia explained that Margaret's bullet had struck Rachel's shoulder, not her heart. Harold carried her out through the boathouse tunnel and convinced Andrew she had died during the struggle. A corrupt physician created the death certificate. Susan later helped Rachel disappear.

"Why didn't Rachel expose them?" Elena asked.

"Because Andrew had Rebecca. Every time Rachel threatened to come forward, he sent proof Rebecca was alive and suffering. Rachel believed silence kept her sister alive."

The cruelty of it felt mathematical. Each captive became the lock on another person's cage.

Rachel had returned to Ash Creek six months ago after learning Rebecca was watching the estate. She and Amelia planned to gather the forged trust records, rescue Rebecca if necessary, and approach federal investigators outside Andrew's influence. Then Susan died. The safe-deposit key vanished. Last night, Rachel received a text from Susan's old number and left the farmhouse alone.

"It said Elena had escaped and needed help," Amelia said. "Rachel thought the message came from Harold."

Elena closed her eyes. Andrew had not merely tracked events. He had arranged them.

Brooks wanted Amelia placed in protective custody. Amelia refused until they recovered the cassette original. The key labeled B-4 belonged to a private vault company in Ash Creek. They drove there before dawn.

Box B-4 contained no cassette.

It held a recent photograph of Rachel bound to a chair, a black dress draped over her injured shoulder. Behind her stood a clock showing 3:10. Beneath the photograph was a handwritten invitation to Susan Moore's memorial service, scheduled for that evening at the Ward estate.

Elena's name appeared as host.

Brooks called the prosecutor, but the photograph alone did not reveal when or where it had been taken. Andrew's estate remained sealed, though a judge had permitted a private memorial arranged before his arrest. The guest list included local officials, hospital administrators, the county sheriff, and the psychiatrist who had diagnosed Elena without meeting her.

"He is gathering everyone involved," Elena said.

"Or everyone he controls," Amelia replied.

Andrew called Naomi at eight that morning and offered terms. Elena could attend the memorial, publicly acknowledge that her injury was an accident, and withdraw her allegations. In return, Rachel would be released.

"It's not an offer," Naomi said over the encrypted call. "It's an invitation to destroy your credibility in front of witnesses."

Elena looked at the false death certificate, Susan's photograph, and the broken pendant. "Then we give him the performance he expects."

The plan required Rebecca. Naomi negotiated her temporary release into federal custody by providing the trust records and evidence of the hidden room. Rebecca agreed to wear a transmitter and enter the estate through the heating tunnel. Amelia would monitor the camera feeds from the old clinic. Brooks, officially excluded from the operation, would remain with Amelia. Federal agents would wait beyond the property until they heard Rachel's voice or saw proof she was inside.

At sunset, Elena returned to the Ward estate in a wheelchair, wearing a black dress and Rachel's chain beneath the collar. Reporters waited outside the gate. Andrew received her beneath the chandelier with cameras watching.

He knelt and kissed her hand.

"You came home," he said.

"Only for my mother."

"Of course."

Margaret stood near the fireplace. She had been released after Andrew's attorney argued that her age and health made detention dangerous. Her cardigan was ivory instead of gray. Her smile was almost maternal.

Harold was absent.

Guests filled the rooms. A portrait of Susan stood surrounded by white lilies, though Susan had hated lilies. Andrew guided Elena before it and handed her a prepared statement.

The first line read: My grief caused me to misunderstand a loving family's attempt to help me.

Elena lifted the microphone.

Before she could speak, a woman's scream rose from inside the walls.

Every guest heard it.

Andrew's hand tightened on Elena's shoulder.

"That," he whispered, still smiling for the cameras, "was not supposed to happen yet."
