Chapter 14 - The House Beneath the Lake

Andrew kept Brooks on the line for forty-three seconds. He told her Daniel Moore was waiting at Bellweather Lake and would exchange the trust ledger for Elena. Then he sent coordinates and disconnected.
Federal agents surrounded the lake property before midnight. Thermal cameras found no one inside the house, but a warm vehicle had recently left the north road. The boathouse foundation concealed stairs descending below the waterline.
Elena was forbidden to join the search. This time she did not argue. Andrew's demand proved he expected her impulsiveness. She remained in the command vehicle with Naomi, Rachel, Rebecca, Amelia, and Brooks while agents entered the underground structure.
The first room contained decades of records sealed in waterproof cabinets. The second held surveillance equipment linked to cameras in the Ward estate, Susan's farmhouse, the veterinary clinic, and several police offices. The third contained a hospital bed.
A man lay in it connected to oxygen.
Daniel Moore was alive.
Agents brought him aboveground beneath armed guard. He was seventy-two, scarred along one side of his face, and too weak to stand. When he saw Rachel, he began to laugh.
"You kept my granddaughter alive," he said. "How sentimental."
Elena felt Rachel move in front of her protectively.
Daniel admitted that Andrew was his son and Brooks his daughter. He had paid Evelyn Brooks for years, not out of love, but silence. Harold raised Andrew in exchange for control of Ward construction contracts. Susan helped Daniel disappear after the warehouse fire, then turned against him when she learned the trust transfers were fraudulent.
"Who fired the gun at Rachel?" Brooks asked.
"Does it matter? All of you survived."
"It matters to me," Rachel said.
Daniel smiled. "Margaret fired. Andrew gave the order. Harold cleaned the floor. Susan changed the papers. Even little Amelia carried a bloody towel into the woods. There are no innocent people in this family, only people who received better editing."
Amelia went pale. She remembered wrapping a towel around Rachel's shoulder before Harold pulled her away. Daniel had transformed an act of help into complicity.
Elena recognized the method. Andrew had learned from him.
Agents recovered the trust ledger, the gun, and recordings of payments to officials. It should have been victory. Daniel, however, claimed Andrew possessed a duplicate archive containing crimes committed by every witness, including evidence that Susan falsified adoptions and that Rebecca stole identities while hiding.
"He will release it before dawn," Daniel said. "Then each of you will be too busy defending yourselves to pursue him."
Naomi asked where Andrew was.
Daniel closed his eyes. "In the only home Elena ever believed was safe."
Susan's first house.
Police reached it twenty minutes later. The building was dark and empty. In the attic, they found Elena's childhood boxes arranged in a circle. Her drawings, school photographs, and birthday cards covered the walls. At the center stood a laptop counting down to six in the morning.
Rebecca disconnected the router. The countdown continued.
"Local trigger," Amelia said. "The files could be stored anywhere."
Elena searched the boxes. Andrew had taken one object from every year of her life. At the bottom of a photo album was a key taped beneath an image of Susan holding Elena as a baby.
The key opened a narrow cupboard behind the chimney.
Inside was a live monitor.
Harold sat tied to a chair in an unknown room. Andrew stood behind him.
"You wanted the man who watched and did nothing," Andrew said to the camera. "At six, Elena gets to decide whether the world receives the archive or Harold receives a bullet. She cannot stop both."
Harold lifted his bruised face.
"Don't choose me," he said.

Andrew placed the gun against his head.
The clock showed twenty-three minutes.
