THE NIGHT ELENA CRAWLED OUT / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - What Susan Did

Rachel refused to speak in the video. Harold repeated the demand, then the image cut to black.

Digital specialists traced the upload through six countries and found nothing. The rain outside the vehicle offered no landmark. Harold had become both rescuer and captor, just as he had with Rebecca years earlier.

Elena watched the clip until she recognized a rhythm beneath the engine noise: two long metallic beats followed by a pause. A railroad crossing bell. In the window's reflection, a green sign flashed for less than a second.

She enlarged the frame. Only three letters were readable: ROW.

Brooks mapped every crossing within two hundred miles near a road containing those letters. There were eleven. Amelia reduced the list by comparing rainfall records at the time of upload. Four remained.

Rebecca chose one immediately. "Crowell Road. It leads to the old Moore textile mill."

The mill had belonged to Rachel and Rebecca's grandfather before the trust transferred it to a shell company. Andrew claimed it was demolished, but satellite images showed the central building still standing beneath overgrown trees.

Federal agents prepared a raid. Elena was ordered to stay in the hospital. She agreed, then left with Naomi through a service elevator after Amelia reported that the guards' encrypted channel had been compromised.

"You are becoming difficult to represent," Naomi said as she drove.

"You can withdraw."

"Absolutely not. I want the pleasure of billing you after you survive."

At Crowell Road, police vehicles blocked the mill entrance. Agents found Harold's car empty beside the railroad tracks. Inside the mill were food, medical supplies, and a recently used operating table. There was no sign of Rachel or Harold.

Elena noticed a pattern painted on the floor: a circle divided by a crooked line. It matched the faint watermark on Susan's memorial invitation.

Rebecca recognized it as the Moore company seal. Before the factory closed, employees used colored seals to identify underground storage rooms. A crooked line indicated the dye reservoir.

Agents opened a rusted hatch beneath the table. Stairs descended into darkness.

At the bottom, they found a concrete chamber filled with filing cabinets. Harold sat against the far wall, bleeding from a wound in his side. Rachel lay unconscious beside him.

Elena reached Rachel first. She was breathing. The wound near her shoulder was old; the blood on the dress had come from Harold.

"Andrew found us," Harold gasped. "I slowed him down."

"Where did he go?"

Harold pointed toward an open tunnel leading beneath the tracks. Agents pursued.

Elena knelt beside him. "What did Susan do?"

Harold's eyes filled with tears. "She chose you."

"I was her daughter."

"Not by birth."

The words made no sense.

Harold reached for Rachel's hand. "After the lake, Susan knew Andrew would search for the surviving heirs. She changed records, moved money, and hid the truth inside the false certificate. Elena Moore was never meant to be a witness. It was a new identity."

Elena looked at Rachel's face.

Harold whispered, "Susan was not your mother. Rachel was."

Rachel's eyes opened.

She looked directly at Elena and said, "Don't believe him."

Then gunfire erupted inside the tunnel.
