THE NIGHT ELENA CRAWLED OUT / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - Rebecca's Version

Elena did not move.

"Give me one reason to believe you."

Rebecca unlocked the brake on the wheelchair beside the bed. "Because Andrew keeps trophies, and you found Rachel's chain."

Elena had told Brooks about the chain less than half an hour earlier. No one else should have known.

"Were you listening?"

"The hidden room has feeds from every camera in the estate. Andrew recorded your hospital conversation through the phone he planted in the flowers."

Elena looked at the vase on the windowsill. Rebecca crossed the room, lifted the arrangement, and removed a device smaller than a coin from beneath the ceramic base.

"He wanted to know what you remembered," Rebecca said. "Now he knows about the desk."

"Andrew is in custody."

"Andrew built his life so he would never need to touch the doors he opens."

Rebecca gave Elena a choice. Stay and trust a system the Wards had manipulated for a decade, or leave through the laundry elevator before Andrew's people reached the hospital. Elena thought of Brooks's confession. It contained guilt, but not proof of innocence. She thought of the rolling pin rising in Margaret's hands and Harold watching without surprise.

She chose motion over certainty.

Rebecca dressed her in loose hospital scrubs, lowered her into the wheelchair, and covered the cast with folded linens. They passed the officers while Rebecca complained about a delayed delivery. In the basement, she wheeled Elena through a service corridor to an old green sedan.

Every movement sent fire through Elena's leg. She gripped the door handle and forced herself to remain conscious.

Rebecca drove to a closed veterinary clinic on the industrial edge of town. Inside, dust covered the waiting room, but the back office held bottled water, blankets, a radio scanner, and photographs of the Ward estate pinned across a wall.

"You've been watching them," Elena said.

"For nine years."

Rebecca removed her cap. Her copper hair had been dyed nearly black. Fine lines surrounded her eyes. "I didn't leave Andrew. He drugged me at the lake house and kept me in a basement room for eleven months. Margaret brought food. Harold changed the locks. Andrew needed my signature on a trust document, and he needed me alive until a property transfer was complete."

"How did you escape?"

"Harold let me out."

That was not the answer Elena expected.

Rebecca explained that Harold had opened the basement door one night and driven her to a bus station. He gave her cash and told her never to return. She obeyed until she learned Andrew had married Elena.

"Why didn't you go to the police?"

"I did. A state investigator returned me to Andrew before sunrise. He said married couples often misunderstood each other. Andrew kept me for another six weeks. When I escaped the second time, I stopped asking institutions for permission to live."

"And last night?"

"I entered the house through the old heating tunnel. I meant to collect the recordings. Margaret found me. Harold locked me in the observation room before Andrew came home. He claimed he was protecting me. When Margaret hit you, I used the phone hidden under the bed to call Brooks. Then I cut through a restraint and escaped while they were outside."

Elena looked at the photographs. Several showed Andrew meeting a gray-haired man outside a courthouse. One showed Margaret handing an envelope to the retired sheriff. Another showed Harold alone at a cemetery.

"What did Rachel discover?"

Rebecca pointed to a blueprint of the lake house. A red circle marked the boathouse foundation.

"Our father created a trust for Rachel and me. The land beneath the Ward estate and the Bellweather property belonged to that trust. Andrew married me to gain control. Rachel found the forged documents. She confronted him during the weekend at the lake."

"Did he kill her?"

"I heard them arguing. Then I heard a gunshot. Brooks arrived before the ambulance. Andrew told me Rachel had drowned."

"You saw Brooks?"

"I saw her car."

It was not the same thing, and Elena said so.

Rebecca's face hardened. "Your need to believe someone good is going to get you killed."

The radio scanner crackled. An officer reported that two policemen at the Ward estate had been found unconscious. Evidence from Andrew's office was missing. A countywide alert had been issued for Elena, described as a vulnerable injured woman abducted from a hospital by an unknown suspect.

Rebecca switched off the radio.

"By morning," she said, "your face will be everywhere, and Andrew will be home."

Elena looked again at the photograph of Harold at the cemetery. He was kneeling before a grave, placing flowers beneath a name partly hidden by his body.
