Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind the Wall

The ambulance took Elena through the storm while two patrol cars sealed the estate. Doctors confirmed a fractured tibia, extensive bruising, dehydration, and traces of a sedative in her blood. Andrew told the officers she had fallen during an argument. Margaret claimed the rolling pin had slipped from her hand. Harold said almost nothing.
By dawn, Andrew and Margaret had been arrested, but Detective Brooks did not celebrate. She sat beside Elena's hospital bed with rain drying on her jacket and placed a plastic evidence bag on the table.
Inside was a cheap black phone.
"This was found in the service passage," Brooks said. "At eleven forty-three, it sent me a photograph of your back door, the gate code, and one sentence: If you still want the truth about Rebecca Ward, come alone."
Elena searched the detective's expression. "Who's Rebecca?"
"Andrew's first wife."
The answer struck harder than Margaret's rolling pin.
Andrew had told Elena he had never been married.
Brooks opened a folder. Rebecca's photograph showed a bright-eyed woman with copper hair and a small scar across her chin. She had disappeared nine years earlier. Andrew reported that she had emptied a joint account and left after an argument. The investigation found no body and no evidence of violence. Harold and Margaret supported his story.
"You investigated?" Elena asked.
"I was a patrol officer. It was my first missing-person call. Andrew convinced everyone she wanted to vanish. I believed him longer than I should have."
Elena remembered the torn restraint in Harold's hand. "Was she in the house last night?"
"We don't know. Officers found a concealed room behind the upstairs linen closet. There was a bed, a camera, bottled water, and restraints. Someone had occupied it recently. A vent opens into your bedroom wall."
Elena felt suddenly exposed beneath the hospital blanket. For three months, she had heard faint tapping after midnight. Andrew told her old pipes made strange sounds in the rain. Twice she had awakened believing someone had whispered her name.
"Why would Rebecca help me escape and then run?"
"Maybe it wasn't Rebecca."
Brooks showed her a second photograph. It had been recovered from beneath the hidden bed. The image was faded and creased. Andrew, much younger, stood beside Rebecca at a summer party. Behind them were Margaret and Harold. At the edge of the frame stood another woman with Rebecca's copper hair.
"Rebecca had a sister," Brooks said. "Rachel. She died in a boating accident ten years ago."
Elena looked more closely. Rebecca was smiling. Rachel was not. Rachel's eyes were fixed on Andrew.
"Andrew said he had no brothers or sisters-in-law. He said Margaret was an only child and his family was small."
"Andrew says many useful things."
The hospital door opened. A uniformed officer spoke quietly to Brooks. Her face tightened.
"What happened?" Elena asked.
"Andrew's attorney arrived with security footage from the kitchen. The video shows Margaret swinging the rolling pin, but the instant of impact is blocked by the island. It also shows you picking up a knife earlier in the evening."
"I was cutting lemons."
"I know. His attorney will say you threatened them. More importantly, your blood test shows zolpidem and alcohol."
"I didn't drink."
"They found an empty wine bottle with your fingerprints in your bedroom."
Elena understood the machinery then. Every ordinary gesture had been prepared to become evidence against her. Andrew had not lost control when he left her on the floor. He had followed a plan.
Brooks lowered her voice. "I can protect you tonight, but if the prosecutor thinks this was a family dispute with conflicting evidence, Andrew could make bail. We need the person who escaped that room."
Elena looked at the black phone. "Can it be traced?"
"No subscriber information. Most data was wiped. There is one saved audio file."
Brooks pressed play.
At first came only breathing. Then a woman's weak voice whispered, "Elena, don't trust the detective. Ask her what happened at Bellweather Lake."
The recording ended.
Brooks became very still.

Elena turned toward her. "What happened at Bellweather Lake?"
The detective did not answer.
