THE NIGHT ELENA CRAWLED OUT / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - The Memorial

The scream came again, followed by three blows from behind the library wall.

Guests turned toward the sound. Phones rose. The sheriff ordered everyone to remain calm, but panic had already entered the room.

Elena pushed the statement off her lap. "Rachel?"

Andrew bent near her ear. "If you want her breathing, read."

The microphone captured his whisper.

For one priceless second, he did not realize it.

Then the speakers repeated his words across the ballroom.

If you want her breathing, read.

The room fell silent.

Andrew tore the microphone from Elena's hand. Margaret moved toward a control panel beneath the fireplace, but Naomi blocked her. Federal agents outside requested authorization to enter. The sheriff refused, claiming no clear evidence of immediate danger.

Elena understood why he was on the guest list.

She stood on her good leg and gripped the wheelchair handle. "There is a hidden room behind the linen closet. There are tunnels behind the office and library. Andrew Ward held his first wife there. He's holding Rachel Moore now."

The sheriff declared Elena emotionally unstable and ordered his deputies to remove her.

No one moved.

Too many cameras were recording.

Margaret reached the control panel and pressed a switch. Steel shutters dropped over the windows. The lights died. Guests screamed and pushed toward locked doors.

Emergency lamps flickered red.

Andrew vanished.

Elena lowered herself to the floor before the crowd could knock her down. Naomi stayed beside her. A section of the library shelf swung inward, and Rebecca emerged, blood running from a cut above her eyebrow.

"Rachel isn't in the room," she said. "The scream was a recording. Andrew has wired the tunnels with gas."

The sharp scent reached them seconds later.

Naomi shouted for everyone to cover their faces. Rebecca led guests toward the rear passage while Elena used the wheelchair to break a glass display cabinet containing an antique fire axe. She handed it to Naomi, who struck the shutter controls until sparks erupted.

Somewhere inside the walls, Margaret yelled Andrew's name.

Rebecca stopped. "She doesn't know where he is."

"Good," Elena said. "Keep moving."

They reached the kitchen. The back door Elena had opened the night before had been reinforced with a steel bar. The ventilation grate was sealed.

Elena looked at the rolling pin lying on the counter as if Margaret had staged it there as a joke.

Naomi swung the axe at the door hinges. Rebecca helped. On the third blow, outside agents began striking from the other side. The door broke inward, and cold rain swept through the gas.

Guests stumbled into the garden. Federal officers detained the sheriff when he tried to leave in an unmarked car. Margaret was found pounding on the locked office door, abandoned by the son she had protected.

Andrew was gone.

In the hidden room, agents found a speaker, a fresh restraint, and Rachel's black dress. A trail of blood led into the heating tunnel and ended at an underground garage. One vehicle was missing.

The microphone recording gave prosecutors enough to revoke Andrew's bail. The altered medical reports, trust documents, and testimony from Rebecca and Amelia expanded the case. News vans surrounded the estate by morning.

Yet Rachel remained missing.

Elena returned to the hospital under federal guard. Naomi placed a tablet in front of her. During the memorial, a live video had been posted from Elena's social media account. It showed Rachel seated in a moving car beside a window wet with rain.

Rachel looked directly into the camera.

"Elena," she said, "Andrew isn't the person who brought me here."
