Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE
Margaret took the documents home.
She read them three times.
Then a fourth.
The legal language was complicated, but one thing was unmistakable.
Years earlier, after Daniel's death, Margaret had signed several documents related to estate administration.
She remembered the paperwork.
She remembered being exhausted.
She remembered Ryan telling her:
"Just sign here, Mom. The lawyer needs everything finalized."
She had trusted him.
Now she saw that one of those documents had been used to establish a financial arrangement connected to the house.
The arrangement was complicated.
But the purpose was simple.
Margaret's money was securing the property.
Melissa had known.
Ryan had known.
And Margaret had not.
She called Ryan.
He did not answer.
She called again.
Nothing.
Then Melissa called.
"You read it."
Margaret's voice was cold.
"Yes."
"Now you understand."
"I understand that I was deceived."
Melissa sighed.
"That's dramatic."
"You used my signature."
"You signed it."
"I didn't understand what I was signing."
"That's not my problem."
Margaret stared at the phone.
For the first time, she heard no apology in Melissa's voice.
Only confidence.
Then Melissa said something Margaret would never forget.
"You should be grateful."
Margaret almost laughed.
"Grateful?"
"You have no idea what we've built."
Margaret looked through the window at the quiet street.
"I know exactly what you built."
Melissa waited.
"You built it with my money."
The call ended.
That night, Margaret opened an old box containing Daniel's belongings.
She found his notebook.
Inside were handwritten notes about the family finances.
One sentence caught her attention.
Daniel had written:
Never let anyone make you feel guilty for asking where your money goes.
Margaret stared at the sentence for a long time.
Then she made a decision.

She would stop asking.
She would start finding out.
