THE MORTGAGE PAYMENT / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - THE TOAST THAT SILENCED THE BACKYARD

The laughter stopped so suddenly that Margaret Harper could hear the faint clink of ice against the side of her glass.

A moment earlier, Melissa had been standing beneath the warm string lights of the Harper family's backyard, champagne raised high, surrounded by relatives who had spent the afternoon eating grilled chicken, potato salad, and homemade peach pie.

Now every face was turned toward Margaret.

Margaret remained standing beside her chair.

She was sixty-three years old, dressed simply in a teal blouse, black pants, and a thin gold bracelet she had received from her late husband years ago. She did not look angry.

That was what frightened Ryan most.

His mother looked calm.

Too calm.

Melissa's smile had disappeared.

Ryan swallowed.

"Mom..." he whispered. "Don't."

Margaret looked at him.

For one second, the hurt in her eyes almost broke through the composure she had carefully built.

Then she turned toward Melissa.

"I think everyone deserves to know what I've been paying."

Someone at the far end of the table shifted uncomfortably.

Melissa lowered her champagne glass.

"Paying for what?"

Margaret smiled faintly.

"Especially before the next mortgage payment."

Silence.

Ryan's face went pale.

His wife, Melissa, stared at him.

Then Margaret reached into the small handbag hanging from her chair.

She pulled out a thick envelope.

She placed it on the table.

No one moved.

Melissa's eyes narrowed.

"What is that?"

Margaret looked at the envelope.

"Something I've been keeping quiet about for almost four years."

Ryan suddenly stood.

"Mom, please."

Margaret looked at him.

"Sit down, Ryan."

He froze.

It was not the volume of her voice that made him obey.

It was the certainty.

He slowly sat.

Margaret pushed the envelope toward the center of the table.

"I never wanted to embarrass you."

Ryan stared at the envelope.

"Then don't."

"I didn't," Margaret said. "Not for four years."

Melissa gave a nervous laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

Margaret finally looked directly at her.

"Is it?"

Melissa's jaw tightened.

"You've always loved making yourself the victim."

A few relatives glanced at one another.

Margaret nodded slowly.

"Maybe."

She opened the envelope.

Inside were bank statements.

Mortgage records.

Receipts.

Transfer confirmations.

And one document that made Ryan's stomach drop.

Melissa saw it too.

Her expression changed instantly.

Margaret noticed.

That was the moment she knew she had been right.

"You recognize that?"

Melissa said nothing.

Margaret lifted the document.

"I think it's time everyone knew whose name is actually on this house."

Ryan closed his eyes.

And somewhere beneath the laughter, music, and summer air, the Harper family's carefully protected secret finally began to crack.

But Margaret still had no idea that the document she was holding was only the first piece of a much larger betrayal.

And Melissa knew exactly where the second piece was hidden.
