THE MORTGAGE PAYMENT / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - THE FILE MELISSA NEVER KNEW ABOUT

Margaret spent the night reviewing everything.

By sunrise, she had created a timeline.

Daniel's concerns.

The hidden account.

Melissa's mother's connection.

The mortgage.

The transfers.

Ryan's silence.

The strange document.

And finally, the date on the photograph.

Something was missing.

A piece that connected Daniel's warning to Melissa's arrival.

Thomas found it.

At least part of it.

"There was an old insurance file," he said.

Margaret looked at him.

"What kind of insurance?"

"Life insurance."

"Daniel had a policy."

"Two."

Margaret frowned.

"I knew about one."

Thomas nodded.

"The second one was never paid to you."

"Who received it?"

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

"An intermediary."

"Who?"

He slid a document across the desk.

The name was unfamiliar.

But the bank account was not.

It was the same account Melissa had used for one of the mortgage transfers.

Margaret's hands went cold.

"How much?"

Thomas told her.

She stared at the amount.

It was enough to pay the house off completely.

Yet someone had chosen to keep the mortgage alive.

Why?

Because the mortgage gave them control.

Margaret suddenly understood.

The payments were not the real objective.

The house was.

But why?

Thomas leaned forward.

"There is something else."

"What?"

"Daniel had another beneficiary designation."

"Who?"

Thomas looked at the document.

Then at Margaret.

"Ryan."

Margaret blinked.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does if Daniel believed Ryan would eventually need protection."

Margaret's eyes filled.

Her husband had been planning for a danger she never understood.

Then Thomas pointed to a handwritten amendment.

"Look at the date."

Margaret did.

It had been signed only days before Daniel died.

And beside the signature was one phrase.

Protect my son from the woman who will find him.

Margaret whispered:

"Melissa."

Thomas did not answer.

Then his phone rang.

He listened.

His face changed.

"What?"

Margaret watched him.

"What happened?"

May you like

Thomas ended the call.

"The house is being transferred."
