THE MORTGAGE PAYMENT / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3 - THE FIRST RECEIPT

The discovery happened at a bank.

Margaret had gone there to transfer another payment.

She had been making the payment for so long that the teller recognized her.

"Same account?"

Margaret nodded.

"Yes."

The teller entered the information.

Then paused.

"Mrs. Harper?"

"Yes?"

"There is a change."

Margaret frowned.

"What kind of change?"

The teller looked at the screen.

"The account is no longer listed under your son's name."

Margaret felt a chill.

"What?"

"The mortgage account."

"Whose name is on it?"

The teller hesitated.

"I can't disclose private information."

Margaret understood.

She thanked her and walked outside.

She immediately called Ryan.

He answered after several rings.

"Hey, Mom."

"Ryan."

Something in her voice made him stop.

"What happened?"

"Did you refinance the house?"

Silence.

"Mom..."

"Did you?"

Another silence.

"Yes."

"When?"

"Last year."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Ryan exhaled.

"It wasn't important."

Margaret gripped her phone.

"I've paid that mortgage every month for almost four years."

"I know."

Those two words hurt more than anything else.

You know.

Margaret looked at the traffic passing in front of the bank.

"You knew?"

"Of course I knew."

"Then why did you let me keep paying?"

Ryan did not answer.

"Ryan."

"I needed the money."

"For what?"

Another silence.

Margaret suddenly understood.

"Melissa?"

"Mom, please."

"Is this about Melissa?"

"Not over the phone."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Then tell me where to meet you."

Ryan agreed.

But he never showed up.

Melissa did.

She arrived alone.

She sat across from Margaret at a small coffee shop.

And she placed a folder on the table.

"Before you get angry," Melissa said, "you need to understand something."

Margaret stared at her.

"I don't think I'm going to like this."

Melissa opened the folder.

"Ryan didn't refinance the house."

Margaret's stomach tightened.

"Then who did?"

Melissa smiled.

"We did."

Margaret stared at the papers.

Her name appeared on one page.

Not as a borrower.

Not as a lender.

As something else.

Something that made her realize the payments she had been making were not simply helping Ryan.

They were protecting Melissa.

And Melissa had arranged it deliberately.
