Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE WAS NEVER REALLY THEIRS
The document showed the house had never been entirely under Ryan and Melissa's control.
Daniel had created a protective trust.
Margaret had unknowingly become its primary beneficiary.
Ryan was the secondary beneficiary.
Melissa was nowhere on the document.
The family stared.
Melissa shook her head.
"That's impossible."
Thomas stepped forward.
"It isn't."
She turned toward him.
"You knew."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell her?"
"Because Daniel asked me not to reveal the trust until there was evidence of an attempted transfer."
Melissa's face went pale.
Margaret looked at Thomas.
"Attempted transfer?"
Thomas nodded.
"The paperwork filed this morning."
Everyone turned toward Melissa.
She said nothing.
Ryan stared at his wife.
"You were transferring the house?"
Melissa looked at him.
"I was protecting us."
"From what?"
"From your mother."
Margaret shook her head.
"You never intended to keep the house."
Melissa's eyes flashed.
"You don't know what I intended."
"Then tell us."
Melissa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then a family member asked quietly:
"Where is the money?"
Melissa looked around.
Her confidence was gone.
Ryan whispered:
"Where is the money, Melissa?"
She looked at him.
Then Margaret.
Then the documents.
Finally, she laughed.
It was a small, bitter laugh.
"You really think this ends with a mortgage?"
Margaret's expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
Melissa stepped backward.
"You've been looking at the wrong account."
Thomas immediately reached for the documents.
"What account?"
Melissa smiled.
"The one Daniel created."
Margaret froze.
"You knew about it?"
Melissa nodded.
"I've known for years."
"How?"
"My mother told me."
Margaret's heart pounded.
"Your mother knew Daniel?"
Melissa's smile returned.
"Oh, Margaret."
