THE MORTGAGE PAYMENT / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - BEFORE THE NEXT MORTGAGE PAYMENT

No one moved.

Melissa stood in the basement doorway, the envelope clutched tightly in her hand.

Margaret stared at her.

"Where did you get that?"

Melissa looked at the letter in Margaret's hand.

"From the same place."

Thomas stepped toward her.

"Put it down."

Melissa ignored him.

She looked at Ryan.

"I never wanted this to happen."

Ryan laughed bitterly.

"You've been lying to me for years."

"I know."

"You used my mother."

"I know."

"You tried to take the house."

"I know."

Ryan stared at her.

"Then why are you still here?"

Melissa looked at Margaret.

"Because there is something you don't understand."

Margaret's voice was steady.

"What?"

Melissa opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of Daniel.

Not of Melissa's mother.

Of Margaret.

Taken years earlier.

Margaret stared at it.

She remembered the location.

It was outside the bank.

The day she had made the first mortgage payment.

But Margaret had never noticed anyone taking the photograph.

On the back was a handwritten message.

She was the wrong person to trust.

Margaret's face went pale.

"Who wrote this?"

Melissa shook her head.

"I don't know."

Thomas took the photograph.

"Where did you find it?"

"In my mother's belongings."

Margaret looked at her.

"Your mother is still alive."

Melissa's eyes widened.

Margaret continued.

"I know."

Melissa took a step backward.

"What?"

"Thomas found the records."

Thomas nodded.

"We located a financial trail."

Melissa stared at him.

"Where?"

Margaret answered.

"Two states away."

Silence.

Ryan looked between them.

"Is she coming here?"

Margaret did not answer.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She answered.

No one spoke.

Then an older woman's voice whispered:

"Margaret."

Margaret froze.

She knew the voice.

She had heard it once before.

Years ago.

At Daniel's funeral.

Melissa's mother.

The woman who had stood quietly beside the cemetery gates.

The woman Margaret had never thought twice about.

"How do you know my number?" Margaret asked.

The woman gave a soft laugh.

"Daniel gave it to me."

Margaret's heart pounded.

"Daniel is dead."

"I know."

"Then why would he give you my number?"

The woman paused.

"Because he knew you would eventually discover the truth."

Margaret looked at the others.

"What truth?"

The woman whispered:

"Your husband didn't hide the money from you."

Margaret's grip tightened around the phone.

"He hid it from me."

The line went silent.

Margaret waited.

Then the woman said:

"And if you want to know why, look beneath the house."

The call ended.

Everyone stared at Margaret.

Ryan whispered:

"Mom..."

Margaret slowly lowered the phone.

For four years, she had believed the mortgage was the betrayal.

Now she understood.

The mortgage had only been the beginning.

She looked at the family gathered around her.

At Ryan.

At Melissa.

At Thomas.

At the locked metal case.

Then toward the ceiling, toward the house Daniel had left behind.

A house that suddenly seemed to contain far more secrets than walls could possibly hold.

Margaret tightened her grip around Daniel's letter.

"Tomorrow," she said quietly, "we find out what he was protecting."

Outside, the late-summer evening grew darker.

And somewhere far away, a woman who knew Daniel's deepest secret was already on her way.

The next mortgage payment was due in the morning.

But Margaret no longer cared about the money.

She wanted to know who had really been paying for the family's silence.

And before sunrise, someone was going to knock on the Harper family's door.

Someone Margaret had never expected to see again.
