Chapter 9 - The Girl Who Left A Trail)

The bedroom window was open.
The screen had been cut.
Claire's dogs were alive but heavily sedated.
A neighbor's security camera showed a woman in a hood leading Lily toward a dark sedan at 6:12 a.m.
Lily was walking.
Not struggling.
Daniel felt terror turn into confusion.
"Why would she go willingly?"
Claire handed him a folded note.
"I found this under her pillow."
The handwriting belonged to Lily.
Dad,
Mom is alive.
She called me.
She said she can prove everything.
I know you will be mad but I need to see her.
I will be careful.
I left clues.
Daniel closed his eyes.
"She called her."
Ruiz looked at the note.
"From what device?"
Lily did not own a phone.
Claire searched the room.
Inside the closet they found a cheap prepaid phone taped beneath a shelf.
One incoming call.
Six minutes long.
The number was blocked.
Daniel wanted to scream.
Then he remembered Lily's last sentence.
I left clues.
"What clues?"
Claire looked around.
"I don't know."
Daniel forced himself to think like Lily.
A memory game.
Blue box.
Loose board.
Silver key.
Rachel had taught her daughter to hide information in simple patterns.
Daniel looked at the puzzle Lily had been building the previous evening.
Several pieces were missing.
He found one on the staircase.
Another near the front door.
Another beneath the porch bench.
Claire stared.
"She's leaving puzzle pieces."
Ruiz immediately organized a search.
A piece lay beside a storm drain at the end of the street.
Another near a bus stop.
Then nothing.
Security footage showed Lily and the hooded woman entering a city bus.
Daniel watched the image.
"Zoom in."
The woman's face was partly visible.
Daniel felt his heart break.
Rachel.
Older.
Thinner.
Hair cut short.
But Rachel.
His wife was alive.
Ruiz looked at him.
"You recognize her?"
"Yes."
For the first time since the investigation began, certainty replaced confusion.
"That's Rachel."
They traced the bus route.
Puzzle pieces appeared at two more stops.
Lily was guiding them.
The trail ended near an abandoned public library scheduled for demolition.
Police surrounded the building.
Daniel insisted on going inside.
Ruiz refused.
Then a message arrived on Daniel's phone.
COME ALONE OR LILY LEAVES WITH ME.
Daniel showed Ruiz.
"No."
"She's my wife."
"She's also a fugitive connected to identity fraud, assault, medical abuse, and now child abduction."
"What if she's trying to protect Lily?"
Ruiz stared.
"From whom?"
Daniel did not know.
Eventually they compromised.
Daniel entered alone with officers positioned nearby.
The library smelled of dust.
Sunlight cut through boarded windows.
"Lily?"
A movement upstairs.
Daniel climbed.
He found Lily sitting at a table.
Alive.
Unhurt.
Rachel stood behind her.
Daniel stopped.
Eleven months of grief collided with reality.
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
"Daniel."
He could not speak.
He had imagined hearing that voice again thousands of times.
Never like this.
Never while their daughter sat between them.
Lily stood.
"Dad."
Daniel crossed the room and pulled her into his arms.
He checked her face.
Her hands.
Her breathing.
"Are you okay?"
"Yes."
"You never do that again."
She nodded into his shoulder.
Rachel whispered, "I had no choice."
Daniel looked at her.
Anger arrived before joy.
"You had eleven months."
Rachel flinched.
"You buried Celeste."
"I buried someone I thought was you."
"I know."
"You watched me bury her."
"I know."
"You lived somewhere while Lily thought her mother was dead."
Rachel began crying.
"It wasn't supposed to last this long."
Daniel stared.
"What happened?"
Rachel looked toward the windows.
"We don't have much time."
"I am done hearing that."
"Douglas knows I'm alive."
"Everyone knows."
"No. He knows where I am."
Daniel looked at Lily.
"We leave now."
Rachel shook her head.
"Not until you understand."
"Then talk."
Rachel sat.
Her hands trembled.
"The day of the crash, Celeste came after me."
"With Venn?"
"Yes."
Rachel told him the truth.
She had arranged to meet a federal financial investigator through an attorney outside the city.
Celeste and Venn followed her.
Venn forced his way into Rachel's car at a gas station.
He demanded the evidence.
Rachel refused.
When a truck pulled into the station, Rachel escaped and drove away.
Celeste followed in the green SUV.
Venn was with her.
On the rural road, the SUV struck Rachel's car from behind.
Once.
Then again.
Rachel lost control.
But the car did not immediately go into the ravine.
It spun against the guardrail.
Rachel climbed out.
Celeste did too.
The cousins fought beside the road.
Venn stayed near the SUV.
Then headlights appeared.
Rachel ran.
Celeste chased.
A second vehicle came around the curve.
Celeste stepped backward.
The impact threw her against Rachel's damaged car.
The driver panicked and fled.
Rachel screamed for help.
Venn dragged Celeste into Rachel's vehicle.
"What?"
Daniel stared.
Rachel continued.
"He said if police found Celeste there, everything would lead back to him."
"So he put her in your car."
"Yes."
"What about you?"
"He thought I was injured worse than I was."
Rachel touched her left side unconsciously.
"I crawled down the embankment. There was a service road below."
Daniel struggled to breathe.
"How did everyone think Celeste was you?"
"She was wearing my coat."
"Why?"
Rachel looked ashamed.
"During the fight, we grabbed each other. My coat tore. Celeste's was covered in mud. It happened fast. Venn put my purse and phone in the car."
"Your ring?"
Rachel closed her eyes.
"He took it from me."
Daniel felt sick.
"And your identification."
"Yes."
"Then you reached the hospital pretending to be Celeste."
Rachel nodded.
"I saw emergency vehicles. I realized what Venn had done. I thought if he believed I was dead, Lily and you might be safe."
"You thought pretending to be Celeste was safer?"
"For one night."
"But you kept doing it."
"I needed access to the house."
"Why?"
"To find the evidence I had hidden."
"The blue box?"
"Yes."
"But Lily found it first."
Rachel nodded.
"Before I did."
Daniel stared at her.
"Then explain the brace."
Rachel's face changed.
"I didn't put Lily in that brace."
Daniel froze.
"You were living in my house as Celeste."
"No."
"What?"
"I left three weeks after the funeral."
Daniel stared.
"That's impossible."
"You were barely home. You slept in the study. I said I had to travel for a few days."
Daniel remembered.
Celeste had gone to visit an aunt in Arizona.
She returned different.
More impatient.
Sharper.
Daniel had blamed stress.
Rachel continued.
"I went to meet Vanessa."
"Celeste's half sister."
Rachel nodded.
"I needed someone who could help me maintain the identity while I gathered evidence."
Daniel's voice turned cold.
"You asked Vanessa to pretend to be Celeste."
"I thought for a few days."
"And then?"
"She realized how much money was involved."
Daniel understood before Rachel finished.
"She betrayed you."
"Yes."
"Where were you?"
"Hiding."
"Why didn't you come back?"
"Vanessa threatened Lily."
Daniel's face hardened.
Rachel continued quickly.
"She sent me photographs from outside school. She said Douglas had people everywhere. She said if I exposed her, Lily would disappear."
"You should have called me."
"Douglas was watching you."
"So you let Vanessa live in our house."
Rachel broke.
"I thought I could get enough evidence to end it."
"For ten months."
"I know."
"You let our daughter live with a woman you knew was dangerous."
Rachel's face crumpled.
"I didn't know how bad she had become."
Daniel pointed toward Lily.
"She padlocked a brace around her."
"I didn't know."
"You should have."
Rachel wiped her face.
"Yes."
The word stopped his anger.
Not because it excused anything.
Because Rachel did not try to excuse herself.
"I failed her too."
Daniel looked at Lily.
His daughter sat quietly, listening to two parents admit the thing neither had wanted to admit.
They both failed her.
Rachel reached into her coat.
Daniel tensed.
She removed a small black camera.
Rachel's real dash camera.
Daniel stared.
"I thought Venn took it."
"He did."
"How do you have it?"
"Vanessa stole it from him."
"Why?"
"Insurance."
"Against Venn."
Rachel nodded.
"She contacted me two weeks ago. She wanted money to disappear."
"Did you meet her?"
"Once."
"The motel."
Rachel nodded.
"Northline photographed us."
"What is on the camera?"
"The crash."
Daniel stopped breathing.
"The whole thing?"
"Enough."
"Then why didn't you give it to police?"
"I didn't know who I could trust."
Ruiz's voice came from the doorway.
"You can start with me."
Rachel spun around.
Officers entered.
Daniel stepped between Lily and everyone else.
Rachel lifted both hands.
Ruiz looked at the camera.
"Put it on the table."
Rachel did.
Then she looked at Daniel.
"Vanessa still has one thing we need."
"What?"
"Your signature files."
"What files?"
"The originals proving Douglas forged your authorizations."
"Where are they?"
Rachel hesitated.
"Vanessa took them."
"Why?"
"Because she wants to trade them."
"To whom?"
Rachel looked toward Ruiz.
"Douglas."
Ruiz's phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression hardened.
"They found Vanessa."
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"Where?"
Ruiz looked at Rachel.
"At Douglas Venn's house."
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"And Venn?"
Ruiz ended the call.
"Gone."
Rachel stared.
Ruiz continued.
"Vanessa says he took Lily's trust documents, five million dollars in bearer instruments, and a gun."
Daniel looked at his daughter.
May you like
Ruiz's next words made the room go silent.
"And he left a note saying he is going to finish what Rachel started on the same road where Celeste died."
