Chapter 6 - The Camera Inside The House)

The first video had been recorded six weeks before Rachel died.
The angle was low.
Hidden.
The camera appeared to be sitting behind books on a shelf in Rachel's study.
Daniel watched from the police conference room.
Rachel entered.
Then Celeste.
The audio was clear.
Rachel's voice came first.
"You forged my father's signature."
Celeste laughed.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"I have the authorization forms."
"So?"
"I compared them with his real signature."
"Congratulations."
"You billed eighty thousand dollars through a company that didn't exist."
Celeste's smile disappeared.
"You should be careful throwing accusations around."
"I already spoke to Grant."
That changed Celeste's expression.
She walked toward Rachel.
"What did he tell you?"
"Enough."
The video ended.
The second recording came from three days later.
Rachel and Douglas Venn.
Same hidden camera.
Venn looked calm.
Almost bored.
Rachel placed documents on the desk.
"My father trusted you."
"He trusted many people."
"You helped steal from him."
"That's an emotional interpretation."
"It is an accurate interpretation."
Venn smiled.
"You have a family, Rachel."
Daniel felt cold.
Rachel did not move.
"Is that supposed to scare me?"
"It is supposed to remind you that choices affect more than one person."
The video ended.
Lily had been right.
The card was important.
But it was not from Rachel's car.
It came from the hidden camera inside Rachel's study.
Daniel realized Rachel had likely removed the memory card and placed it in the blue box shortly before her death.
The real dash camera remained missing.
The third video was worse.
It was recorded the evening before the crash.
Celeste stood in Rachel's study alone.
She searched drawers.
Opened cabinets.
Checked behind books.
At one point, she looked directly toward the hidden camera.
Daniel held his breath.
But Celeste did not see it.
Then Douglas Venn entered.
Not through the front door.
Through the side entrance.
Daniel recognized it.
Only family and close friends knew the keypad code.
Celeste had given it to him.
Venn closed the study door.
"She made copies."
Celeste whispered.
"How many?"
"I don't know."
"Where are they?"
"I don't know."
Venn stared at her.
"You've had months inside this house."
"She's suspicious."
"Then stop being obvious."
Celeste crossed her arms.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Find the files."
"And if she's already given them to someone?"
Venn paused.
Then he said a sentence Daniel would remember for the rest of his life.
"Then we make sure she cannot explain them."
The video ended.
Daniel sat perfectly still.
Detective Ruiz stopped the playback.
"There's more."
Daniel looked at her.
"Play it."
"Daniel."
"Play it."
The fourth clip began the next morning.
The day Rachel died.
Rachel entered the study.
She seemed hurried.
She removed the camera from behind the books.
That explained why there were no later recordings from the room.
She sat at the desk.
Then she looked directly into the lens.
Daniel's breath caught.
Rachel's face filled the screen.
"If this is being watched, I may not have had time."
Daniel's eyes burned.
Rachel continued.
"Celeste and Douglas know I found the payment records. Grant gave me enough to prove the medical billing was fraudulent. Douglas has been moving money through temporary care accounts for years."
She paused.
"I am meeting someone today who can help."
Ruiz glanced at Daniel.
Rachel continued.
"I made copies of everything. The originals are not in this house."
Daniel thought of the storage unit.
"If anything happens to me, Daniel needs to know I did not leave him."
Daniel covered his mouth.
Rachel's voice trembled.
"I would never leave Lily."
A tear slipped down Daniel's face.
Rachel took a breath.
"Celeste has been following me. Yesterday I found a tracker beneath my car."
Ruiz paused the video.
Daniel stared.
"A tracker."
"That's what she said."
"Did police find one after the crash?"
"No."
Ruiz resumed.
Rachel continued.
"I removed it and placed it on the wrong vehicle."
For the first time in hours, Daniel almost smiled.
That sounded like Rachel.
"If Celeste believes she knows where I am today, she doesn't."
Rachel looked toward the door.
"But Douglas scares me more."
The smile disappeared.
"He knows things he should not know."
The video glitched.
Then Rachel leaned close.
"Daniel, if you're seeing this, believe Lily."
The recording ended.
Daniel bowed his head.
For eleven months, he had done exactly the opposite.
Ruiz let the silence remain.
Finally Daniel asked, "Who was Rachel meeting?"
"We don't know."
"The person who could help."
"We're searching her calls, emails, calendar."
Daniel looked at the screen.
"What about the rest of the card?"
"There are two more files."
"Play them."
The fifth was short.
No image.
Only audio.
Rachel's voice.
Then another woman.
Daniel recognized neither the place nor the second speaker.
Rachel said, "If I give you this, can you protect Lily's trust?"
The woman replied, "If the records are what you say they are, yes."
"Can you protect Daniel?"
"That's harder."
"Why?"
"Because his signature appears on several authorizations."
Daniel's stomach dropped.
Rachel answered immediately.
"He didn't know."
"I believe you. A prosecutor may ask why he signed."
Rachel sighed.
"Because he trusted me."
The woman paused.
"And Celeste knew that."
"Yes."
"Do you understand how serious this is?"
"Yes."
"Then you should go to the police now."
Rachel's voice became quiet.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because Douglas has someone inside."
Ruiz paused the recording.
Daniel looked at her.
"Inside where?"
"The police?"
"Maybe."
Daniel stared at her.
Ruiz's expression hardened.
"We don't assume anything."
"Rachel did."
"We verify."
She resumed.
The second woman said, "Who?"
Rachel answered.
"I don't know yet."
The file ended.
The final file had been recorded only two hours before Rachel's crash.
Rachel was in her car.
The camera angle showed part of the steering wheel.
Not the road.
Someone was sitting beside her.
Only a man's sleeve was visible.
Rachel's voice shook.
"You said you could help me."
The man replied, "I can."
Daniel straightened.
He knew the voice.
Not well.
But he had heard it before.
At the funeral.
Douglas Venn.
Rachel said, "Then why are you here?"
"Because you forced this."
"Where is Celeste?"
"Driving."
Rachel breathed sharply.
"You followed me."
"Of course we followed you."
There was movement.
Rachel said, "Get out of my car."
Venn's voice remained calm.
"You should have taken the money."
"What money?"
"The offer."
"I never received an offer."
Silence.
Then Venn laughed quietly.
"Then Celeste kept it."
Daniel looked at Ruiz.
The financial conspiracy was fracturing even in Rachel's final hours.
Rachel said, "Get out."
"Give me the copies."
"No."
"Lily doesn't need to grow up without a mother."
Rachel's voice hardened.
"Is that a threat?"
The audio suddenly cut.
The file ended.
Daniel stood.
"Douglas Venn was in Rachel's car."
Ruiz nodded.
"At least shortly before the crash."
"He threatened her."
"Yes."
"And Celeste was driving another car."
"According to Venn."
Daniel looked at the dark screen.
"What happened after that?"
"We still need the dash camera."
A knock sounded at the door.
An officer entered.
He handed Ruiz a note.
Her expression changed.
"What?"
"The storage manager."
"Curtis?"
"He lied."
"About what?"
"He knows who has been paying for Unit 214."
Daniel leaned forward.
"Who?"
Ruiz read the note again.
"Rachel."
Daniel stared at her.
"Rachel is dead."
"That's what Curtis thought too."
"What are you saying?"
"Three months after Rachel died, a woman came to the office and prepaid the unit for one year."
Daniel felt the room tilt.
"Did he recognize her?"
Ruiz nodded.
"He says she looked exactly like the photograph on the rental record."
Daniel stopped breathing.
"No."
"Daniel."
"No. I identified Rachel's body."
Ruiz's voice was careful.
"Then we need to determine who the woman was."
Daniel thought of Lily.
Of the blue box.
Of Rachel's warning.
Of Celeste searching.
"What did the woman say?"
Ruiz looked at the note.
"Only one sentence."
May you like
"What?"
"Keep Unit 214 locked until my daughter finds the key."
