Chapter 12 - The Woman Who Knew All Three Sisters)

Helen Ward had dementia.
But not as severely as the family had been told.
Rachel had not visited her aunt in years.
Celeste rarely discussed her mother.
Vanessa apparently visited only once every few months.
Detective Ruiz arranged an interview.
Rachel went.
Daniel stayed with Lily.
Two hours later Rachel called.
"You need to come."
Daniel arrived at the facility and found Rachel sitting outside a private room.
She looked shaken.
"What happened?"
Rachel handed him an old photograph.
Three girls stood beside Helen.
Rachel.
Celeste.
And Vanessa.
They were teenagers.
Daniel studied them.
Celeste and Vanessa looked almost identical.
"Why didn't you know Vanessa looked so much like Celeste?"
"I hadn't seen her since we were teenagers. She disappeared after a family fight."
"What fight?"
Rachel looked toward Helen's room.
"Celeste accused Vanessa of stealing."
Daniel almost laughed at the pattern.
"What did Helen say?"
"That Celeste and Vanessa had been switching places since they were kids."
"What?"
"They used to pretend to be each other."
"Why?"
"Pranks. School. Punishment. Later, money."
Daniel felt cold.
Rachel continued.
"Helen says when their father died, Vanessa signed paperwork as Celeste."
"How old were they?"
"Nineteen."
"So Vanessa was experienced at identity fraud long before your crash."
"Yes."
"What else?"
Rachel lowered her voice.
"Helen says Douglas met Vanessa years before he met Celeste."
Daniel stared.
"Then Celeste wasn't the one who started the fraud."
"Maybe not."
They entered the room.
Helen Ward was frail but alert.
Her eyes settled on Daniel.
"You are Rachel's husband."
"Yes."
She smiled sadly.
"You finally learned to look."
The sentence stung because it was true.
Daniel sat.
"Did Vanessa work with Douglas Venn?"
Helen laughed quietly.
"Douglas liked girls who wanted more than they had."
"Did Celeste?"
"Celeste wanted approval. Vanessa wanted money."
Rachel sat beside the bed.
"Aunt Helen, did Vanessa ever pretend to be Celeste as an adult?"
Helen looked at her.
"Many times."
"When?"
"When it was useful."
"For Douglas?"
"Sometimes."
Daniel's mind raced.
"Could Vanessa have been involved before Rachel's crash?"
Helen's smile disappeared.
"She was."
Rachel leaned forward.
"How do you know?"
"Celeste told me."
"When?"
"The week before she died."
Rachel's breath caught.
"What did she say?"
"That she wanted out."
The room became silent.
Helen continued.
"Celeste said Vanessa and Douglas were stealing too much. She said Rachel had started asking questions."
Rachel began crying.
"Celeste was going to tell me."
"She tried."
"When?"
"The day you fought."
Rachel stared.
"What fight?"
Helen frowned.
"By the road."
Daniel felt a chill.
"Celeste wasn't chasing Rachel to stop her?"
Helen shook her head.
"She wanted to warn her."
Rachel stood.
"No."
The crash footage showed Celeste striking Rachel's car.
Twice.
Helen continued.
"Douglas made Celeste follow. Vanessa was in the other car."
Daniel froze.
"What other car?"
"The one that hit Celeste."
Rachel stared.
She had assumed a stranger struck her cousin.
A panicked unknown driver.
But perhaps there had been no stranger.
"Vanessa hit her."
Helen nodded.
"Celeste told me Vanessa said she would."
Rachel looked ill.
"But Celeste was already dead when..."
She stopped.
Helen's story could only come from before the crash.
A threat.
Vanessa had promised to kill Celeste if she defected.
At the roadside, she had done it.
Douglas then staged the body as Rachel.
Rachel survived.
And later, desperate for someone who resembled Celeste, Rachel made the catastrophic decision to contact Vanessa without knowing Vanessa had killed her own sister.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
"You brought Celeste's killer into our home."
Rachel closed her eyes.
"I didn't know."
Vanessa had not merely taken advantage of an opportunity.
She had planned it.
The identity switch.
The household access.
The trust fraud.
Lily's medical manipulation.
Everything.
They returned to the station.
Vanessa was confronted with the new evidence.
At first she laughed.
Then Ruiz played enhanced dash-camera audio.
A woman's voice could be heard after the impact.
Douglas shouted, "Vanessa, move the car."
Silence filled the interview room.
Vanessa stopped smiling.
Ruiz leaned forward.
"You killed your sister."
Vanessa stared at the table.
"You then let Rachel believe a stranger did it."
No answer.
"You impersonated the woman you killed."
Vanessa whispered, "Celeste was weak."
Daniel watched from behind the glass.
Rachel began shaking.
Ruiz continued.
"She wanted out."
"She wanted to ruin everything."
"So you hit her with a car."
Vanessa looked up.
"Douglas told me to scare her."
"Your sister died."
"I didn't mean to hit her that hard."
The confession came without warning.
Daniel stared.
Ruiz remained still.
Vanessa realized what she had said.
Too late.
Rachel sank into a chair.
Celeste had not been innocent.
She participated in fraud.
She followed Rachel.
She helped Douglas.
But in her final hours, she had apparently tried to stop.
Vanessa killed her before she could.
The truth was uglier than a simple villain.
But it was finally complete.
Almost.
Ruiz asked, "Why Lily?"
Vanessa's face hardened.
"She was always watching."
"She was ten."
"She remembered things."
"So you called her a liar."
"She was difficult."
"You forged diagnoses."
"Grant did."
"You paid him."
"He liked money."
"You tightened the brace."
Silence.
"You locked it."
Vanessa's eyes shifted.
Ruiz leaned forward.
"Why?"
Vanessa spoke softly.
"Because she found Celeste's journal."
Daniel felt cold.
"What journal?"
Rachel stood.
Vanessa looked directly toward the one-way mirror.
She knew they were there.
"Rachel never told you about the journal, did she?"
Daniel turned to Rachel.
Her face showed genuine confusion.
Vanessa smiled.
"Celeste kept records too."
Ruiz asked, "Where?"
Vanessa laughed.
"Lily knows."
Daniel felt his heart jump.
Lily.
Again.
The child everyone dismissed had been carrying the final pieces of the truth from the beginning.
Daniel returned to Claire's house.
He sat beside Lily.
"Did you find a journal?"
She nodded.
"Where?"
"In Mom's room."
"What did it look like?"
"Green."
"Where is it now?"
Lily's face changed.
"I gave it to Dr. Nolan."
Daniel stared.
"When?"
"At the clinic."
"Before he cut the brace?"
She nodded.
"How?"
"I put it in the magazine rack when Celeste wasn't looking."
Daniel nearly laughed from disbelief.
"Why?"
"Mom said doctors have to help if kids are hurt."
Daniel closed his eyes.
His daughter had understood the system better than he had.
Dr. Nolan was contacted.
He remembered the notebook.
He had assumed another patient left it.
It was still in his locked office drawer.
Inside was Celeste Ward's journal.
The last entry was written the morning she died.
Vanessa is here.
Douglas brought her back because he does not trust me anymore.
Rachel knows enough to destroy all of us.
I am going to warn her.
If Vanessa follows me, she is not coming to help.
May you like
The final sentence was underlined.
My sister has always been better at pretending to be me than I am.
