Chapter 10 - The Road Where It Began)

Douglas Venn wanted Rachel.
That became obvious within minutes.
The note left at his house contained coordinates.
The crash site.
And a time.
Midnight.
Ruiz refused to let Rachel go.
Rachel insisted.
Daniel wanted both of them locked inside the station.
Nobody listened.
Vanessa Ward was taken into custody.
Daniel saw her through the interview room window.
The resemblance to Celeste was startling.
Not identical.
But close enough that grief, exhaustion, and months of Daniel avoiding eye contact had allowed him to accept the substitution.
That realization humiliated him.
Vanessa had exploited his grief.
But he had also retreated from his family.
He could no longer deny that.
Ruiz questioned Vanessa while Rachel watched from another room.
"Why the brace?" Ruiz asked.
Vanessa stared at the table.
No answer.
Ruiz placed photographs of Lily's injuries in front of her.
Vanessa looked away.
"Why?"
"She kept taking it off."
"Because it hurt."
"Grant said she needed it."
"Grant says you paid him to exaggerate Lily's condition."
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Grant says whatever keeps him breathing."
Ruiz leaned closer.
"You needed medical invoices."
Silence.
"You needed Daniel to sign more authorizations."
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"You convinced him Lily was unstable so he would let you control her care."
Still nothing.
"And when Lily found Rachel's memory card, you realized she had evidence."
Vanessa looked up.
Ruiz saw it.
"So you locked the brace."
"She hid things."
"You hurt a ten-year-old child because you were searching for a memory card."
Vanessa's face twisted.
"I didn't know it was in the brace."
"No. That's the beautiful part. The one place you thought gave you total control became the place you failed to search."
Vanessa looked toward the mirror.
Toward Daniel.
He wondered whether she knew he was there.
Ruiz continued.
"Where are Daniel's original signature samples?"
"Douglas has them."
"Why does he need them?"
"To make the fraud look like Daniel's."
Daniel's blood ran cold.
Vanessa continued.
"That was always his endgame."
Rachel whispered, "I knew it."
Daniel looked at her.
She stared at Vanessa through the glass.
"Douglas needed someone to take the fall."
"Me."
"Yes."
Daniel thought of hundreds of documents he had signed.
Digital forms.
Insurance paperwork.
Estate forms.
School forms.
Venn had access to them all.
Vanessa continued.
"Once the money was moved, Douglas planned to claim Daniel and Rachel had created the scheme."
Ruiz frowned.
"Rachel was dead."
"Exactly."
A dead woman could not defend herself.
A grieving husband with signatures across the paperwork would make a convenient criminal.
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
"And you?"
"I was supposed to disappear."
Ruiz gave a humorless laugh.
"But you wanted more money."
Vanessa smiled weakly.
"I learned from the best."
Rachel turned away.
Daniel looked at her.
"You used Vanessa."
"I know."
"You brought her into this."
"I thought I could control her."
"Everyone in this story thought they could control someone."
Rachel looked at Lily through a camera feed from the safe room.
"Not anymore."
The dash camera was examined immediately.
The footage showed the pursuit.
Celeste's SUV striking Rachel's car.
Rachel climbing out.
Celeste confronting her.
Douglas Venn nearby.
Then the camera angle tilted during the crash.
Audio continued.
Rachel shouted.
Celeste screamed.
A vehicle struck something.
Venn's voice cursed.
Then he said clearly, "Put her in the car."
Another voice replied, "What about Rachel?"
Venn answered, "She won't make it."
It was enough.
More than enough.
But Venn was gone.
At 11:15 p.m., he called Rachel.
Police traced the number but found only a discarded phone.
He sent a photograph.
A metal case beside the guardrail.
Rachel recognized it.
"The original trust records."
Another message arrived.
MIDNIGHT.
ALONE.
OR EVERYTHING BURNS.
Ruiz smiled slightly.
Rachel frowned.
"What?"
"He wants documents destroyed more than he wants you dead."
"How is that good?"
"Because it means he's scared."
Daniel looked at Ruiz.
"What is the plan?"
"The plan is Rachel does not go alone."
Rachel started to argue.
Ruiz raised a hand.
"You're done improvising."
Daniel almost laughed.
For the first time, someone had said exactly what Rachel needed to hear.
At 11:47, police units positioned themselves along Route Seventeen.
Rachel drove Daniel's recovered car toward the crash site.
A recording device was hidden beneath her coat.
Daniel waited with Ruiz in an unmarked vehicle a quarter mile away.
He hated every second.
At 11:58, Rachel reached the guardrail.
The road was empty.
Fog hung over the ravine.
She stepped out.
"Douglas?"
Nothing.
Then headlights appeared behind her.
A black sedan stopped.
Douglas Venn emerged.
He carried a metal case.
No visible gun.
Rachel stood still.
"You killed Celeste."
Venn smiled.
"Celeste killed herself by being careless."
"You put her body in my car."
"I solved several problems at once."
Rachel's hands curled.
"You let my family bury her."
"You chose to stay dead."
Rachel flinched.
Daniel felt anger burn through him because Venn's words contained just enough truth to hurt.
Venn continued.
"You had eleven months to become a hero. Instead you became a ghost."
"Give me the documents."
"Give me the camera."
Rachel shook her head.
"It's already with police."
Venn's smile disappeared.
That was the moment Ruiz wanted.
Fear.
Real fear.
Venn looked toward the darkness.
"You brought them."
Rachel said nothing.
He reached inside his coat.
Ruiz shouted into the radio.
"Move."
Daniel's door was already open.
Officers flooded the road from both sides.
Venn pulled a gun.
Rachel dropped behind the engine block.
Police shouted.
Venn turned toward the ravine.
For one horrifying second Daniel thought he would jump.
Instead Venn ran along the guardrail.
An officer tackled him.
The gun slid across the wet road.
Daniel ran toward Rachel.
She stood.
Alive.
Venn screamed as officers handcuffed him.
"You think this ends with me?"
Ruiz crouched beside him.
"It ends with enough evidence."
Venn laughed.
"You have no idea how many people touched that money."
"Then you'll have plenty to talk about."
Daniel reached Rachel.
They stared at each other.
Eleven months of grief stood between them.
So did betrayal.
Fear.
Mistakes.
Love.
And their daughter.
Rachel whispered, "Is Lily safe?"
"Yes."
Venn suddenly stopped laughing.
He looked at Daniel.
"You should ask your wife what she did with the first set of files."
Daniel turned.
Rachel's face went pale.
"What does he mean?"
Venn smiled.
"She didn't tell you?"
Ruiz pulled him toward the patrol car.
Venn shouted over his shoulder.
"Rachel made a deal before the crash."
Daniel looked at Rachel.
"What deal?"
She said nothing.
"Rachel."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"The person I was going to meet."
"The federal investigator?"
"No."
Daniel's stomach dropped.
"Then who?"
Rachel looked toward the ravine.
"Your father."
May you like
Daniel went completely still.
His father had been dead for six years.
