Chapter 8 - The Body Daniel Was Told Was Rachel)

The night Rachel died existed in Daniel's memory as broken pieces.
A phone call from an unknown number.
Rain against the windshield.
Hospital lights.
A police officer speaking too softly.
Celeste crying in the corridor.
A doctor telling him there had been extensive trauma.
Daniel remembered asking to see Rachel.
He remembered Celeste saying, "You don't want to."
He remembered insisting.
Then he remembered a hospital room.
A sheet.
Rachel's face.
Bruising.
Swelling.
A small crescent scar on the left hand.
Daniel had believed.
Why would he not?
Now Detective Ruiz reopened every record.
The body had been identified through personal effects and family confirmation.
No DNA test had been performed.
There had been no reason.
The dead woman carried Rachel's driver's license.
Rachel's wedding ring.
Rachel's phone.
Daniel had recognized her.
Celeste had recognized her.
The medical examiner noted damage consistent with the crash.
Ruiz tracked down the emergency physician who treated the unidentified patient brought from the ravine.
Dr. Kenneth Ellis was retired.
He remembered the case because of one odd detail.
"The woman arrived without shoes."
Daniel frowned.
"Rachel wore boots that day."
"Maybe they were lost."
"Anything else?"
Ellis thought.
"She had a surgical scar near her right knee."
Daniel's blood went cold.
Rachel did not.
Celeste did.
Years earlier, Celeste had torn a ligament skiing.
Daniel remembered visiting her after surgery.
Ruiz stared at him.
"You're sure?"
"Yes."
The room became silent.
Daniel whispered, "No."
Ruiz did not answer.
"If that body was Celeste..."
He stopped.
It could not be.
Celeste had been living in his house for ten months.
Unless the woman living in his house was Rachel.
No.
Impossible.
He knew his wife.
Didn't he?
He thought of the differences after the funeral.
Celeste had become quieter.
More controlled.
She knew details about Rachel's habits.
But cousins could know those things.
She avoided old photographs.
She stopped wearing perfume.
She claimed grief made certain places difficult.
Daniel stood.
"This is insane."
Ruiz agreed.
"Which means we verify."
The medical examiner's archived samples still existed.
DNA testing was requested.
Results would take time.
Daniel went to Claire's house.
He said nothing about the possibility to Lily.
He refused to put that confusion inside her mind without evidence.
Lily was sitting on the living room floor assembling a puzzle.
She looked up.
"Did you find Celeste?"
"No."
"Did you find Mom's camera?"
"No."
He sat beside her.
"Lily, can I ask you something weird?"
She nodded.
"Did Celeste ever do anything after Mom died that reminded you of Mom?"
Lily thought.
"She started making pancakes like Mom."
Daniel frowned.
"How?"
"Mom always made tiny ones first."
Daniel remembered.
Rachel called them tester pancakes.
Celeste had started doing the same.
He assumed Rachel taught her.
"Anything else?"
"She knew the song."
"What song?"
"The one Mom sang when I couldn't sleep."
Daniel's throat tightened.
It was an old song Rachel's grandmother sang to her.
Rachel rarely sang it around anyone.
"Did Celeste know it before?"
Lily shook her head.
"I asked Mom once if Celeste knew. Mom said no."
Daniel felt dizzy.
Lily continued.
"Celeste cried when she sang it."
"Did she sing it often?"
"Only once."
"When?"
"The first night she slept in Mom's room."
Daniel turned away.
No.
He refused to build a theory from pancakes and songs.
Then Lily said, "Sometimes she called me Bug."
Daniel froze.
Rachel's private nickname for Lily.
Only Daniel and Rachel used it.
Celeste had called her Lily.
Always.
"When?"
"When she forgot."
Daniel stared.
"What do you mean forgot?"
"She would say Bug and then stop talking."
Daniel's mind raced.
What if the woman who moved into his house after the funeral was not Celeste?
What if Rachel survived the crash?
What if Celeste died?
But why would Rachel pretend to be Celeste?
Why would she hurt Lily?
Why forge medical diagnoses?
Why attack Dr. Nolan?
The theory collapsed instantly.
The woman who locked Lily's brace had terrorized her.
Rachel would never do that.
Unless two separate events had been confused.
Maybe the corpse was neither Rachel nor Celeste.
Maybe records were wrong.
Maybe Dr. Ellis remembered another patient.
Ruiz called.
"I have something."
"What?"
"Security footage from the hospital the night of the crash."
Daniel drove to the station.
The footage was grainy.
Celeste appeared first.
Or the woman believed to be Celeste.
She arrived wearing jeans and a dark coat.
Twenty minutes later Daniel appeared.
They stood together.
The woman hugged him.
Daniel watched his own past self collapse against her.
Ruiz slowed the video.
"Look at her hand."
Daniel leaned forward.
The woman had a bandage around her left palm.
Just like the person who later paid the storage unit.
The crescent scar.
Rachel's scar.
Daniel stared.
"No."
Ruiz paused.
"Could Rachel and Celeste have similar scars?"
"No."
"You are certain?"
"Yes."
They examined more footage.
At one point, the woman stepped away and made a phone call.
The camera caught her face in profile.
Daniel felt tears fill his eyes.
It looked like Celeste.
Yet something about the movement was Rachel.
The way she tucked her hair behind her ear.
The way she pressed her thumb against her lips when anxious.
Tiny habits.
Habits grief had hidden in plain sight.
Daniel whispered, "That was Rachel."
Ruiz did not respond.
"If Rachel was in the hallway..."
He looked at the hospital room on the screen.
"Then who was under the sheet?"
A forensic odontologist reviewed archived dental images.
The answer arrived the following morning.
The body buried as Rachel Carter was Celeste Ward.
Daniel sat alone in a police interview room when Ruiz told him.
He could not process it.
Celeste had died eleven months ago.
Rachel had survived.
Rachel had then allowed everyone to believe she was Celeste.
Rachel had moved into her own house under her cousin's identity.
Rachel had raised her own daughter pretending to be another woman.
Rachel had locked Lily inside a painful brace.
Rachel had attacked a doctor.
Rachel had run.
None of it made sense.
Ruiz placed a second document on the table.
"The DNA confirms the body was Celeste."
Daniel stared.
"Then the woman we've been calling Celeste..."
"Is almost certainly Rachel."
Daniel stood so quickly the chair fell backward.
"No."
"Daniel."
"No. Rachel wouldn't do that to Lily."
Ruiz's face was grim.
"I agree."
He stopped.
"What?"
"Something else is wrong."
Ruiz placed photographs on the table.
Medical records.
"Celeste's old surgical scar was on the right knee. The body had it."
"Okay."
"Rachel had the scar on her left palm. Hospital footage shows the surviving woman had a bandage there."
Daniel nodded.
"Then Rachel survived."
"Yes."
"So why are you saying something else is wrong?"
Ruiz slid over a photograph of Lily's brace.
"The woman at the clinic had no scar on her left palm."
Daniel stared.
He remembered grabbing her arms.
Her hands.
Smooth skin.
No scar.
"Maybe surgery removed it."
"Possible."
Ruiz placed another image beside it.
A photograph taken by Northline five weeks earlier.
Celeste outside the motel.
The left palm was visible.
No scar.
Daniel felt the room shrink.
"Then who is she?"
Ruiz looked at him.
"We found another Ward cousin."
Daniel waited.
"Name?"
"Vanessa Ward."
Daniel frowned.
He had never heard the name.
"Celeste had a younger sister."
"No."
"Half sister. Lived in Arizona. Changed her surname after marriage. Almost no contact with the family."
Daniel stared.
"Where is she?"
Ruiz's expression told him before she answered.
"Missing."
"Since when?"
"Ten months ago."
The same month the woman calling herself Celeste moved into Daniel's house.
Daniel whispered, "So Rachel survives the crash. Celeste dies. And then Vanessa disappears."
Ruiz nodded.
"And someone using Celeste's identity enters your family."
Daniel's phone rang.
Claire.
He answered.
She was crying.
"Daniel."
His heart stopped.
May you like
"What happened?"
"Lily's gone."
