Chapter 9 - Richard Voss’s Last Message)

Richard Voss did not die.

Doctors saved him after emergency treatment.

But he remained unconscious.

Someone had contaminated a sealed bottle of water inside federal custody.

That meant the network reached inside the building.

The same building protecting Alex, Clara, Lily, and Arthur.

Nobody trusted anyone.

Reynolds moved the Carter family to a secure government residence.

Derek remained detained.

Teresa was transferred separately.

Beatrice entered witness protection after admitting she had been threatened into arranging the false funeral.

Alex did not sleep.

At 3:17 a.m., Clara found him sitting on the kitchen floor of the safe house.

“You should rest.”

“So should you.”

She sat beside him.

For a long time neither spoke.

Then Alex said, “Did you ever love me?”

Clara turned.

“What?”

“If my mother introduced us because of your family…”

“Alex.”

“Was any of it real?”

She took his face in both hands.

“Every second.”

He closed his eyes.

“I hate that I had to ask.”

“I hate that they made you need to.”

He leaned his forehead against hers.

“Why didn’t you tell me about the trust?”

“Because once I found it, I found something else.”

“What?”

“My father left a warning.”

She stood.

From inside her hospital bag, she removed a children’s storybook.

The Blue Bird.

Lily’s book.

Alex stared.

“This is what she meant?”

“Yes.”

Clara opened the back cover.

The cardboard had been cut and resealed.

Inside was a micro-SD card.

“You had the evidence the whole time?”

“Not all of it.”

“Then what’s on this?”

“My father’s final archive.”

“Why didn’t they find it?”

“Because I made them believe the archive was digital.”

“They tortured you over something inside a children’s book?”

“They never searched Lily’s books.”

Alex looked toward the bedroom where Lily slept.

Clara inserted the card into a secured government laptop.

One video file appeared.

DANIEL_HART_FINAL.

Clara’s hand shook as she pressed play.

A man appeared on screen.

Thin.

Bearded.

Forty-something.

Clara gasped.

“My dad.”

Daniel Hart looked directly at the camera.

“If Clara is watching this, I failed to come home.”

Clara began crying silently.

“I need you to know that the Voss family did not create the system. They inherited a piece of it.”

Alex leaned closer.

Daniel continued.

“The board calls itself Meridian Twelve. Twelve voting families. Corporate dynasties, political donors, private foundations. They buy vulnerable companies and use death, guardianship, debt, addiction, and scandal to transfer control.”

Alex thought of Derek.

Debt.

“Bluebird is their medical arm. Voss Meridian is logistics.”

Daniel held up a document.

“The Hart trust is important because it owns the original encryption infrastructure used to track Meridian Twelve’s private transactions. Whoever controls the trust can expose them.”

Clara whispered, “That’s why Lily matters.”

Daniel continued.

“If my daughter ever has a child, that child becomes the final trustee when she reaches seven years of age.”

Alex froze.

“Seven?”

Clara looked at him.

Lily’s seventh birthday was five weeks away.

Daniel’s expression became grave.

“The board cannot seize the trust after the heir turns seven unless the heir voluntarily signs a transfer at adulthood. Before seven, however, guardianship can be manipulated.”

Alex’s blood went cold.

Five weeks.

Everything made sense.

The timing.

Clara’s kidnapping.

The false funeral.

The guardianship contingency.

Daniel leaned toward the camera.

“And Clara, if Teresa Carter is still alive, find her before you condemn her. She helped me escape in 1999.”

Alex stared.

Clara turned toward him.

Daniel continued.

“But do not trust Arthur.”

The video stopped.

Neither of them moved.

Alex looked toward the locked bedroom door where Arthur slept under guard.

His father had claimed he tried to protect Daniel.

Daniel’s last message said the opposite.

Then the secure laptop displayed a second file that had not been visible before.

It opened automatically.

A live text message appeared.
