Chapter 10 - The Person Watching the Safe House)

The message should have been impossible.
The laptop was isolated from public networks.
Federal cyber specialists had checked it.
Yet words appeared on the screen.
WE KNOW WHERE LILY IS.
Alex grabbed the computer.
“Trace it!”
Clara shouted for security.
Agents flooded the room.
The laptop went black.
Thirty seconds later, alarms sounded throughout the safe house.
Someone had accessed the external gate.
Alex ran toward Lily’s bedroom.
The bed was empty.
His heart stopped.
“LILY!”
Clara screamed.
Then a tiny voice answered from inside the closet.
“Mommy?”
They opened it.
Lily was crouched behind hanging coats with her doll.
Alex pulled her into his arms.
“Why are you in here?”
“Grandpa told me.”
Arthur.
Agents rushed to his room.
Empty.
The window was open.
A guard lay unconscious outside.
Arthur’s wheelchair was gone.
Security footage showed something impossible.
Arthur had not escaped alone.
A woman wearing a federal agent’s jacket had wheeled him through a service exit.
Her face was hidden.
But Arthur appeared calm.
He had gone willingly.
Monroe arrived forty minutes later.
“You think he defected?”
Alex stared at the footage.
“I don’t know what I think anymore.”
Clara looked at Lily.
“What did Grandpa say?”
“He said if the lights blink, hide.”
“When?”
“Before bed.”
“So he knew.”
Lily nodded.
“Did he say anything else?”
“He said Daddy has to find the twelve doors.”
Monroe looked at Clara.
“Meridian Twelve.”
Lily reached into her pocket.
“And he gave me this.”
A key.
Small.
Brass.
Stamped with the number 12.
Alex took it.
“Do you know what it opens?”
Lily shook her head.
But Clara did.
Her face changed.
“My father had one.”
“Where?”
“In an old photograph.”
She searched the archive.
They found the image.
Daniel Hart stood beside Arthur Carter in 1998.
Both men younger.
Both smiling.
Around Daniel’s neck hung a brass key marked 7.
Arthur’s key had the number 12.
“What are the doors?” Alex asked.
Clara enlarged the background.
Behind them was a wall of steel deposit boxes.
Monroe recognized the architecture.
“Old Union Federal Bank.”
The bank had closed in 2003.
Its original headquarters still stood downtown, converted into private document storage.
Federal agents secured the building before sunrise.
Vault twelve opened with Arthur’s key.
Inside were no documents.
Only a cassette recorder.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed twelve people around a long table.
Richard Voss’s father.
Arthur Carter.
Daniel Hart.
Teresa Carter.
And eight others Alex did not recognize.
On the back:
FOUNDING SESSION, 1998.
Clara stared at Arthur’s face.
“He wasn’t investigating them.”
Alex felt sick.
“He helped found them.”
The cassette began playing.
Arthur’s younger voice filled the vault.
“This is Arthur Carter, position twelve. If this recording has been recovered, Meridian has fractured.”
Alex gripped the edge of the table.
Arthur continued.
“Daniel wants out. Teresa wants to help him. Voss wants him dead. I have agreed to appear loyal so I can preserve the evidence.”
Clara looked at Alex.
Arthur’s voice broke slightly.
“Daniel does not trust me. He should not.”
The tape crackled.
“Because I gave Voss the boat route.”
Clara staggered backward.
Alex caught her.
Arthur had betrayed Daniel.
Perhaps tried to save him later.
Both could be true.
The recording continued.
“I thought they would only frighten him. I was wrong.”
Arthur described the escape.
Teresa had secretly moved Daniel before the boat exploded.
Daniel survived.
Arthur helped hide him afterward.
But in 2004, Meridian found him again.
“This time,” Arthur said, “they offered me a choice.”
Alex whispered, “What choice?”
The tape answered.
“My son or Daniel’s life.”
Clara stopped breathing.
May you like
“I chose Alex.”
The tape ended.
