Chapter 11 - Teresa Carter Finally Told the Truth)

Alex demanded to see his mother.

Teresa agreed only after learning Arthur had disappeared.

She entered the interrogation room without makeup, without jewelry, without the controlled elegance Alex had seen his entire life.

She looked old.

He sat opposite her.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“You chose me over Daniel too?”

Her eyes filled.

“No.”

“Dad says Meridian made him choose.”

“They did.”

“And you?”

“I tried to save both.”

“You helped stage my wife’s funeral.”

“Yes.”

“You had her kidnapped.”

“No.”

“You took her phone.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep Richard from finding the archive.”

Alex stared.

“You expect me to believe you were protecting her?”

“I was trying to buy time.”

“You screamed at Lily.”

“I was terrified.”

“You grabbed her.”

“I was wrong.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“About everything?”

Teresa’s voice cracked.

“Almost.”

Alex sat back.

For once she did not defend herself.

She told him about 1998.

Arthur had been one of twelve founders who believed they were creating a private coalition to protect family-controlled companies from hostile takeovers.

Daniel Hart built the secure transaction network.

Voss introduced political connections.

Over time, Meridian changed.

Influence became coercion.

Coercion became death.

Daniel tried to leave.

Teresa helped him disappear.

Arthur betrayed the escape route under pressure but later redeemed himself by hiding Daniel for five years.

“Why did Daniel tell Clara not to trust Dad?”

“Because Arthur never told him about the choice.”

“What choice?”

Teresa looked away.

Alex’s voice hardened.

“Tell me.”

“In 2004, Meridian discovered Daniel’s location. They also discovered you.”

“What about me?”

“You were twenty-two. Drinking too much. Racing motorcycles. Easy to stage as an accident.”

Alex remembered that year.

He had crashed twice.

Once because his brake line mysteriously failed.

Arthur had become obsessive afterward.

Teresa continued.

“They told Arthur Daniel died or you died.”

“So Dad gave him up.”

“No.”

“What?”

“Daniel gave himself up.”

Alex stared.

“He overheard Arthur discussing the threat. Daniel contacted Meridian directly.”

Clara’s father had traded his life for Alex’s.

A man Alex had never met had died to save him.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel believed Arthur could eventually protect Clara.”

Teresa began crying.

“He made us promise she would never know.”

Alex closed his eyes.

“And then you introduced me to her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she was being watched. If she became your wife, Arthur and I could protect her under the Carter name.”

“Was Richard involved?”

“No. He thought the meeting was accidental.”

“Until Lily.”

“Yes.”

“Then the genetic test exposed everything.”

Teresa nodded.

“Richard realized Lily was the final Hart trustee. Meridian wanted control before her seventh birthday.”

“So why cooperate?”

Teresa hesitated.

“Because they had Arthur.”

“What?”

“The stroke.”

Alex froze.

“It wasn’t natural?”

“No.”

“They poisoned him?”

“A controlled neurological toxin. Enough to disable speech.”

Alex’s fists tightened.

“They threatened to finish it.”

“And Clara?”

“I tried to convince her to surrender temporary custody documents. She refused.”

“As she should.”

“I know.”

“Derek?”

“Richard owned him.”

“Beatrice?”

“Threatened.”

“Simon Bell?”

“Paid.”

“Who ordered Helen Royce killed?”

Teresa’s face changed.

“I don’t know.”

“Who is above Richard?”

Teresa leaned forward.

“The original twelve are mostly dead or retired. Their children inherited positions.”

“Who holds position one?”

She whispered a name.

“Eleanor Vale.”

Alex had heard it before.

Every American had.

Eleanor Vale was chairwoman of Vale International Foundation, billionaire philanthropist, presidential adviser, and one of the most respected women in the country.

“You’re saying Eleanor Vale runs Meridian?”

“I’m saying Richard feared her.”

Alex stared.

“Where is Arthur?”

Teresa shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Then why did he run?”

“Because he thinks he can trade himself for Lily.”

Alex stood.

“Trade himself to whom?”

May you like

Teresa looked at him.

“To the woman who ordered Daniel Hart’s death.”
