Chapter 8 - The Father Who Could Not Speak)

Alex refused to believe it.

Teresa had lied about Clara’s death.

She had hidden cameras in his home.

She had taken payments.

Accusing Arthur was desperation.

That was what Alex told himself.

Then federal agents searched Arthur’s old lake house.

They found seventeen safe-deposit keys.

Three passports under different names.

A handwritten ledger.

And photographs of Richard Voss dating back to childhood.

Arthur was not merely connected to the Voss family.

He had known them longer than Teresa had.

Reynolds placed the evidence in front of Alex.

“I need you to understand something. Your father’s stroke does not make him innocent.”

Arthur sat across the room with a court-appointed attorney.

Alex looked at him.

“Dad?”

Arthur’s eyes filled.

“Did you work with them?”

Arthur raised his left hand.

Yes.

Clara inhaled.

“For how long?”

Arthur attempted speech.

“B… before…”

“Before Mom?”

He nodded.

Alex felt cold.

“What did you do?”

Arthur reached for the marker.

His hand shook.

He wrote one word.

BUILD.

“You built Bluebird?”

Arthur nodded.

Clara stared.

“You designed the system?”

Another nod.

Alex stood.

“Why?”

Arthur wrote slowly.

PROTECT.

“Protect who?”

Arthur pointed at Alex.

Alex laughed.

“Me?”

Arthur nodded.

“From what?”

Arthur wrote:

THEM.

“That makes no sense.”

Arthur struggled.

Then wrote a name.

DANIEL.

Clara stepped closer.

“My father?”

Arthur nodded.

He began writing again, fighting his body for every letter.

DANIEL FOUND MONEY.

TOLD ARTHUR.

RICHARD FATHER WANTED HIM DEAD.

“I thought Mom was involved,” Alex said.

Arthur shook his head.

Then wrote:

TERESA WARNED HIM.

Clara stared.

“What?”

Arthur nodded urgently.

Alex looked at Monroe.

“Teresa warned Daniel?”

Monroe’s expression gave nothing away.

Arthur continued.

BOAT FAKE.

Clara gripped the table.

“My father survived?”

Arthur nodded.

Her face collapsed.

“All these years?”

Arthur’s eyes filled.

Then he shook his head.

Alex understood.

“He survived the boat accident but died later?”

Arthur nodded.

“When?”

Arthur wrote:

2004.

Clara sat down.

She had been sixteen.

“What happened?”

Arthur’s hand stopped.

He stared at her.

Then wrote:

I FAILED.

Clara covered her mouth.

Arthur began crying silently.

Alex had never seen his father cry.

Not once.

Arthur wrote again.

TERESA NOT ENEMY THEN.

Alex looked toward the interview rooms.

“Then when did she become one?”

Arthur wrote:

LILY.

Everything came back to Lily.

Arthur’s next line took almost two minutes.

TERESA LEARNED TRUST.

“She learned Lily could inherit.”

Arthur nodded.

“Then?”

HE OFFERED HER CONTROL.

“Richard?”

Arthur shook his head.

Alex frowned.

“If Richard didn’t offer her control, who did?”

Arthur lowered the marker.

Then he drew a simple symbol.

A circle.

Three lines through it.

Clara stared.

“I’ve seen that.”

“Where?”

“In my father’s papers.”

Monroe photographed it.

“What does it mean?”

Clara shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Arthur began struggling violently to write another word.

The marker slipped twice.

Finally:

BOARD.

“What board?” Alex asked.

Arthur wrote:

NOT VOSS.

The room fell silent.

Richard Voss had seemed like the center.

Now Arthur was saying he was merely one piece.

Reynolds entered quickly.

“Alex.”

“What?”

“We just lost Richard.”

“What do you mean?”

“He collapsed in holding.”

“Heart attack?”

“No.”

She looked at Clara.

“Poison.”

Arthur slammed his hand down.

May you like

The message was unmistakable.

Whoever stood above Richard had just removed him before he could talk.
