Chapter 6 - The Company Beneath the Company)

Simon Bell refused to speak after his arrest.
But his phone spoke for him.
Investigators found encrypted messages linked to Richard Voss, Teresa Carter, Derek, and six senior Voss Meridian executives.
The most recent message had been sent twelve minutes before Bell entered Clara’s hospital room.
FINISH HART PROBLEM BEFORE SHE TALKS.
Hart.
Not Carter.
Clara’s maiden name.
Her father’s name.
The investigation became federal by noon.
Voss Meridian offices were searched.
Richard vanished before agents arrived.
His private jet remained at the airport.
His cars remained at his estate.
His passport had not been scanned.
Yet nobody knew where he was.
Alex sat in a conference room with federal prosecutor Maya Reynolds and Detective Monroe.
Reynolds spread financial diagrams across the table.
“Voss Meridian appears legitimate from the outside. Technology logistics, infrastructure consulting, risk analytics.”
“I’ve worked there fourteen years.”
“You worked in one part of it.”
“What’s the other part?”
“We’re still determining that.”
Clara sat beside Alex.
She had insisted on attending despite doctors ordering rest.
Reynolds tapped a red-marked line.
“Bluebird Holdings purchased distressed companies, private clinics, elder-care facilities, and insurance portfolios. Those assets were then used to hide payments.”
“To whom?”
“Judges. Doctors. auditors. police officers. corporate directors.”
Alex looked at Monroe.
“A network.”
“More like an ecosystem,” Reynolds said.
Clara leaned forward.
“My father discovered they were buying influence through deaths.”
Reynolds looked at her.
“Explain.”
“Executives died unexpectedly. Widows surrendered voting shares. Heirs entered guardianship disputes. Competitors suffered accidents. Assets moved.”
Alex stared.
“You think they killed people for ownership?”
Clara looked at him.
“I think they built a system where death was sometimes cheaper than negotiation.”
He felt sick.
“And my mother?”
Reynolds slid another document across the table.
Teresa Carter’s name appeared on payment records dating back twenty-seven years.
Alex stopped reading after the third page.
His mother had received millions.
Not eighteen million.
More than thirty.
Clara touched his arm.
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
“Alex.”
“She raised me.”
“I know.”
“She packed my school lunches.”
Clara said nothing.
“She sat beside me when I broke my leg. She cried at our wedding.”
“She may have loved you.”
He looked at her.
“Don’t.”
“People can love someone and still become monsters.”
The conference room door opened.
An agent entered.
“We found Richard.”
Alex stood.
“Where?”
The agent’s expression was strange.
“At Mr. Carter’s house.”
Alex frowned.
“My house?”
“No.”
The agent looked at Arthur.
“Your father’s former residence.”
Arthur had owned another property before his stroke.
A lake house abandoned for months.
Teams surrounded it.
Richard surrendered without resistance.
That was what worried Monroe.
Men who believed they were untouchable did not surrender easily.
Richard arrived at the federal building smiling.
He requested Alex by name.
Reynolds refused.
Richard refused to speak.
Finally Alex said, “Let me see him.”
“You are a witness.”
“He wants something.”
“That’s why he wants you.”
Clara objected.
“Alex, no.”
But Arthur, sitting quietly nearby, tapped twice on his wheelchair.
Alex looked at him.
“You think I should?”
Arthur nodded.
Reynolds allowed it behind glass with agents present.
Richard sat in an interrogation room wearing a cashmere sweater.
No handcuffs.
Perfectly calm.
Alex entered.
Richard smiled.
“Terrible week.”
Alex remained standing.
“You tried to murder my wife.”
“Simon Bell acted independently.”
“Bullshit.”
“Language.”
Alex nearly laughed.
“You staged her funeral.”
“I protected a company.”
“You kidnapped Clara.”
“I protected you.”
That stopped him.
Richard leaned forward.
“Do you know why Teresa introduced you to Clara?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Richard smiled.
“You think it was to control Daniel Hart’s daughter.”
Alex said nothing.
“You were never the target, Alex.”
“Then who was?”
Richard’s eyes brightened.
“Lily.”
Alex went still.
May you like
Richard leaned back.
“Ask your wife why your daughter’s birth certificate was changed.”
