Chapter 13 - The Day the Carter Family Turned Against Meridian)

The evidence broke the first wall.

Then another.

Then another.

Executives were arrested in New York, Boston, Dallas, and Washington.

Two former judges were indicted.

Three private hospitals were placed under federal control.

Bluebird Holdings was frozen.

Voss Meridian’s board was dissolved pending judicial review.

Richard Voss woke from his coma and immediately requested immunity.

For the first time in decades, Meridian Twelve began collapsing in public.

Alex stood outside the courthouse with Clara beside him.

Reporters filled the street.

The story had exploded worldwide.

THE FUNERAL THAT EXPOSED A CORPORATE EMPIRE.

THE SIX-YEAR-OLD HEIRESS WHO COULD CONTROL BILLIONS.

THE FAMILY THAT FAKED A WOMAN’S DEATH.

Alex hated every headline involving Lily.

They moved her again.

New identities.

Private security.

Therapists.

For a week, Lily asked only one question.

“Can we go home?”

Nobody knew how to answer.

Their house remained evidence.

Their grandmother remained under federal supervision.

Their grandfather required surgery after the warehouse escape.

Derek survived two gunshot wounds.

Clara visited him in the hospital.

Alex stayed outside the room.

When she returned, she said, “He wants to see you.”

“No.”

“He saved Arthur.”

“He helped kidnap you.”

“I know.”

“He sold us out.”

“I know.”

“You forgave him?”

“No.”

Clara took Alex’s hand.

“But I believe people should have to live long enough to face what they did.”

Alex finally entered.

Derek looked smaller in the hospital bed.

“You look terrible,” Alex said.

Derek smiled weakly.

“You always were the supportive brother.”

Alex sat.

Silence.

Then Derek said, “I didn’t know they would take Clara.”

“You still told them.”

“Yes.”

“You terrified Lily.”

“Yes.”

“You helped them get inside my house.”

“Yes.”

Alex stared at him.

“Why?”

Derek’s eyes filled.

“Because I thought I could pay them back and walk away.”

“You took four hundred thousand dollars.”

“I owed worse people more.”

“You should have told me.”

“I was ashamed.”

“That nearly got my wife killed.”

“I know.”

Alex stood.

Derek whispered, “There’s one more thing.”

Alex stopped.

“What?”

“Richard had another file.”

“What file?”

“Your file.”

“They already had one.”

“No.”

Derek looked at him.

“The real one.”

Alex felt something cold.

“What does that mean?”

“I heard Richard and Eleanor arguing. She said if the Hart girl reaches seven, use Carter Protocol.”

“What is Carter Protocol?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why mention it?”

“Because Richard said Arthur would never let them.”

Alex turned toward him.

“And?”

Derek swallowed.

“Eleanor said Arthur wasn’t Alex’s father.”

Alex stared.

“Don’t.”

“I don’t know what it means.”

“Don’t.”

“I’m telling you what I heard.”

Alex left without another word.

He drove directly to Arthur’s hospital.

Arthur was awake.

Alex closed the door.

“Am I your son?”

Arthur stared at him.

“Dad.”

Arthur’s eyes filled.

Alex repeated.

“Am I your biological son?”

Arthur slowly shook his head.

Alex gripped the bedrail.

“Who is?”

Arthur began crying.

He reached for the marker.

His hand trembled.

One name appeared.

DANIEL.

Alex could not move.

Daniel Hart.

Clara’s father.

His wife’s father.

No.

Impossible.

Arthur shook his head violently as Alex recoiled.

Then Arthur tried writing again.

NOT HER DANIEL.

Alex stopped.

Another Daniel.

Arthur wrote:

DANIEL VOSS.

Alex stared.

Richard Voss had an older brother.

A man who supposedly died before Alex was born.

The implications were unbearable.

If Arthur was telling the truth, Alex carried Voss blood.

Lily carried both bloodlines.

Hart and Voss.

The child Meridian feared was not simply heir to one trust.

She might legally connect two founding dynasties.
