Chapter 9 - The Maid Who Vanished)

At dawn, Daniel inspected Matteo's grave himself.

The coffin remained in the crypt, but the burned remains buried five years earlier were gone. Dust patterns suggested removal months before, perhaps years. Someone had replaced the tamper seals with expert precision.

On the satin lining lay a fresh red rose.

Daniel found four notes carved into the coffin lid in the old childhood code. COME HOME.

He told no one except Maria.

"If Matteo is alive, why hasn't he come for Sofia?" she asked.

"Perhaps he cannot."

"Or perhaps he chose not to."

Daniel recognized the anger beneath her hope. Love abandoned for five years did not return as simple joy.

Back at the mansion, he imposed new rules. No one moved alone. Meals were tested. Doors required two keys. Every guard was replaced in staggered shifts. Sofia wore a bracelet containing a silent alarm and location transmitter.

She called it her lion bracelet.

"Press the eye if you are frightened," Daniel told her.

"What happens?"

"I come."

"Even if you're busy?"

"Especially then."

Maria watched from the doorway, her expression unreadable.

That afternoon, Daniel received confirmation that the Red Hook shipment was real. Leo Mancini's location had not leaked. Neither had Julian's rail yard. Only Vincent's false information had produced an attack, but the result no longer proved Vincent's guilt. Someone might have overheard him, monitored his phone, or anticipated Daniel's test.

Daniel searched Vincent's rooms anyway.

He found no Crow's Crown symbol, no secret phone, and no poison. He did find a photograph of Vincent holding Daniel and Matteo as boys. On the back, Lorenzo had written: To the man I trust with both my sons.

Trust had ruined more Morettis than bullets.

When Daniel returned to the private wing, Maria was gone.

Her pistol lay beneath the mattress. Her red gala dress hung in the wardrobe. Sofia was playing in the nursery with Eleanor and believed her mother was working.

On the bathroom mirror, Maria had written in soap: I need the first place we called home.

Daniel ordered the mansion locked down, then checked the garage. No car was missing. A service camera showed Maria leaving inside a florist's van thirty minutes earlier. She had changed into jeans and carried Matteo's envelope.

"She went to Astoria," Vincent said when Daniel showed him the footage.

"Why?"

"Because the password note named their first home. Perhaps she saw something we missed."

"Or she received instructions."

Vincent hesitated. "From Matteo?"

Daniel hated how quickly hope could rearrange evidence.

He drove to Astoria with Vincent and four men. Maria's old apartment occupied the third floor above a closed bakery. The front door stood unlocked.

Inside, dust covered nearly everything except a path to the nursery. A faded moon and stars remained on one wall. Beneath the windowsill, someone had removed a floorboard.

Daniel found Maria's phone beside the empty compartment.

Its last recording was still running.

He pressed play.

Maria's voice came first. "Matteo?"

A man answered from across the room. "You should have kept running."

There was a struggle, a crash, and Maria cried out. Another voice, electronically distorted, spoke close to the phone.

"Daniel, bring the original ledger to Pier Nineteen. Bring the child. Tell Vincent he may come if he wants to confess."

The recording ended with four notes whistled softly.

Vincent looked ill. "This is the same pier."

Daniel found a smear of blood on the nursery wall. Beneath it, Maria had drawn a V with one finger.

Vincent saw it too.

Daniel's guards raised their weapons toward him.

"Do you think she meant me?" Vincent asked.

"I think whoever took her wants me to."

"That is not an answer."

"It is the only reason you're still breathing."

Daniel returned to the mansion to find Sofia sitting on the front staircase. She knew something was wrong before anyone spoke.

"Mommy didn't come home," she said.

Daniel knelt before her. "I am going to find her."

"She went to find Daddy."

"How do you know?"

Sofia opened her hand. A tiny folded note rested in her palm.

"A bird came to my window."

May you like

The note contained seven words in Matteo's handwriting.

MARIA IS LYING. DO NOT BRING SOFIA.
