Chapter 11 - The Road South)

Daniel drove faster than the rain.

Maria sat beside him with her injured hand wrapped against her chest. Vincent followed with the remaining guards. No one spoke because every possibility was worse than the last.

The bracelet's final signal had appeared on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, then vanished near an abandoned toll warehouse. Daniel called Eleanor. No answer. Mrs. Bell's phone went directly to voicemail. The mansion's entire camera system showed the same frozen image of an empty nursery.

At the warehouse, they found a black town car beneath a broken loading canopy. The rear door was open. Sofia's bracelet lay crushed on the pavement.

Maria picked it up and swayed.

Daniel searched the car. Blood marked the driver's seat, but there was no body. A pink thread clung to the door latch.

"Her dress," Maria whispered.

Vincent's men spread through the building. One called from an office above the warehouse. They had found Eleanor tied to a chair, alive but dazed. Mrs. Bell lay beside her with a head wound.

Daniel cut his mother's restraints. "Where is Sofia?"

Eleanor struggled to focus. "A message came from your number. You said the pier was compromised and ordered us to the country house. The driver knew the family code."

"Who was he?"

"He wore a cap. I never saw his face. When we reached the bridge, Mrs. Bell realized we were going the wrong direction. Sofia pressed the bracelet. The driver struck the brakes."

"Did he take her?"

Eleanor gripped Daniel's sleeve. "Sofia ran."

They found small footprints in mud behind the warehouse. They crossed a drainage ditch and ended at a line of storage garages. Maria called Sofia's name until her voice broke.

A faint knock answered from inside the sixth unit.

Daniel tore the lock away with a crowbar. Sofia sat behind a stack of tires with Mr. Buttons clutched to her chest. Mud covered her pink dress. She ran past Daniel and threw herself into Maria's arms.

"I pressed the lion," she sobbed. "But you didn't come."

Daniel knelt beside them. "I came."

"You were late."

The words hurt because they were true.

Sofia explained that the driver had chased her into the alley. Another man appeared from between the garages. He wore a black coat and a silver ring. He fought the driver, hid Sofia in the unit, and told her to knock only when she heard Maria.

"What did his face look like?" Daniel asked.

"Like you, but sadder."

Maria stopped breathing.

"Did he say his name?"

"No. He said he knew my song."

Outside, guards discovered the driver unconscious beneath the highway. He had a broken jaw and the Crow's Crown symbol on his wrist. In his pocket was an old digital recorder.

Daniel played it in the car while Maria held Sofia.

His own voice filled the speaker.

"Rocco, Matteo has become a danger to everything. Take him to Pier Nineteen. Make sure he never comes back."

Maria stared at Daniel.

Vincent closed his eyes. "I hoped this did not exist."

"It is false," Daniel said.

"That is your voice," Maria whispered.

"Words cut from different conversations."

"How do you know?"

Because Daniel remembered saying every fragment.

Rocco, Matteo has become a danger to himself.

Take him to Pier Nineteen.

Make sure he never comes back alone.

The complete instruction had been meant to protect Matteo after their argument. Someone had removed six words and built a death sentence.

Daniel explained, but Maria's face remained closed.

"You told Rocco to take him there," she said. "You put him on that pier."

"Yes."

"And you never told me."

"I did not know it mattered until now."

"It mattered every day he was gone."

She carried Sofia to Vincent's car and asked him to take them back to the mansion. Daniel did not stop her. He had demanded Maria's truth while releasing his own only when evidence forced him.

Vincent lingered before entering the car.

"Grief needs someone to blame," he said.

"You sound pleased that it chose me."

"I am trying to keep what remains of this family together."

Daniel looked at the recorder. "Whoever made this had access to my archived calls."

"Your father kept copies."

"So did you."

Vincent's expression did not change. "Be careful, Daniel. Suspicion can become the thing it claims to prevent."

He drove away with Maria and Sofia.

Daniel remained beneath the highway until his phone vibrated. A private alert from the crushed lion bracelet had uploaded six seconds of audio before it died.

He played the file.

The false driver cursed. A struggle followed. Then the man in the black coat spoke.

"Tell Vincent the grave could not hold me."
