Chapter 8 - The Mother Who Kept the First Secret)

Daniel's mother arrived before midnight.

Eleanor Moretti had lived in Florence since her husband's death, refusing every invitation to return to the mansion. She entered the ballroom in a white coat, surveyed broken glass and terrified guests, and slapped Daniel across the face.

"You held a gala while someone hunted a child under your roof."

Daniel accepted the blow. "How did you know?"

"Vincent called me."

Maria, standing beside Sofia at the top of the stairs, looked sharply toward the counselor.

Vincent spread his hands. "She is family."

Eleanor saw Sofia.

Her anger vanished. She crossed the room slowly, as if approaching an animal that might disappear. Sofia hid behind Maria's skirt.

"You have his eyes," Eleanor whispered.

"Everyone says that."

"Do you know who I am?"

Sofia shook her head.

"I am your grandmother. If your mother permits it."

Maria's posture remained guarded. "Did you know about us?"

"I knew there was a woman. Matteo would smile at his phone and leave Sunday dinner before dessert. I did not know about the baby until the week he died."

Daniel's voice sharpened. "You knew?"

"Your father knew first. He had Matteo followed."

Eleanor asked Mrs. Bell to take Sofia to the nursery, then demanded the library be cleared. Daniel, Maria, Vincent, and Eleanor sat before the cold fireplace like survivors of a family trial.

"Lorenzo believed a child made Matteo weak," Eleanor said. "Matteo believed she gave him a reason to become strong. They fought. Your father ordered me to forget what I had heard."

"And you obeyed," Maria said.

Eleanor met her eyes. "For three days. Then I arranged passports for you, Matteo, and the unborn child. I gave them to Vincent."

Everyone turned toward him.

Vincent did not flinch. "And I gave them to Matteo."

"He never received them," Maria said.

"He did. I placed them in his hands at Pier Nineteen."

Daniel stood. "You were at the pier."

"Yes. Matteo asked me to drive him to the border. Before we left, Lorenzo called. He said you had discovered the trafficking and needed Matteo at the docks."

"I made no call."

"I know that now. At the time, the voice sounded like your father. The authorization came through your code. Matteo went inside. Gunfire began. I was hit and lost consciousness. When I woke, he was gone."

Vincent opened his shirt collar. A faded bullet scar crossed his chest.

Daniel had seen the scar before. Vincent always claimed it came from an attack in Boston.

"Why lie for five years?"

"Your father ordered silence. He said Matteo had betrayed the family and that speaking his name would endanger you. I owed Lorenzo my life. By the time I understood he was protecting someone, Lorenzo was dying and you had become boss. I had no proof, only shame."

Eleanor looked at Daniel. "Your father was afraid of you near the end."

"He was afraid of weakness."

"No. He was afraid you would discover what he permitted."

Daniel crossed to the window. The mansion reflected back at him, a house full of rooms he owned and histories he had never entered.

Maria's voice was quiet. "Did Lorenzo order Matteo killed?"

Eleanor closed her eyes. "I asked him before he died. He said, I ordered one son protected. I did not understand which son he meant."

A guard brought the laboratory report Daniel had requested that morning. The DNA comparison used a glass Sofia had touched and Daniel's medical sample. He opened it alone.

Probability of an avuncular relationship: 99.87 percent.

He handed the page to Maria.

She read it, then looked toward the ceiling, where Sofia slept. For five years, she had carried the truth without anyone else willing to name it. Now paper had made it official.

Daniel took the Moretti ring from around Maria's neck. She stiffened, but he did not remove it. He turned it so the crest faced outward.

"Sofia Moretti is under my protection," he said. "And so are you. Not as servants. Not as prisoners. As family."

Maria searched his face. "Family caused this."

"Then family will end it."

Eleanor's phone rang.

She listened without speaking, then slowly lowered it.

"The family crypt in Queens was opened tonight," she said.

Daniel knew the answer before he asked. "Which grave?"

"Matteo's."

"What did they take?"

May you like

Eleanor looked directly at Maria.

"Nothing. The grave was already empty."
