Chapter 12 - The Truth Daniel Buried)

Daniel returned to the mansion after midnight and found Maria waiting in his study with a gun.
Sofia slept upstairs. Eleanor and Mrs. Bell were safe. Vincent had called the family doctor, reinforced the gates, and retired to the blue office. Everything appeared controlled.
Maria pointed the pistol at Daniel's chest.
"Tell me the whole story," she said.
He closed the door behind him. "If you wanted me dead, you would not have waited."
"Do not make this easier for yourself."
Daniel placed his weapon on the desk and raised empty hands.
He told her about the final night with Matteo. The brothers had met in the mansion chapel. Matteo accused Lorenzo of protecting a trafficking network and accused Daniel of refusing to see it. Daniel believed the documents were fabricated by enemies. They fought with fists, then words.
"I told him he was weak," Daniel said. "I said the family would be safer if he disappeared."
Maria's gun trembled.
"He went to you after that. I called Rocco and ordered him to take Matteo to Pier Nineteen, where a boat waited. I thought I was giving him the escape he wanted."
"Why didn't you go with him?"
"Pride."
"That is a small word for five stolen years."
"There is no word large enough."
He admitted that when the burned car was found, he had suspected the body was wrong. The dental records matched because the family dentist confirmed them. The copied ring ended his doubt. Daniel accepted death because it punished him cleanly. Searching would have required hope, and hope required admitting he might have failed a brother who was still waiting.
Maria lowered the gun by an inch. "You chose guilt because it asked less of you than love."
"Yes."
The answer broke something open between them. Not forgiveness, but honesty.
The study door moved. Sofia stood in the gap, sleepy and frightened.
"Mommy, why do you have the gun?"
Maria lowered it at once. "I was putting it away."
Sofia came to Daniel and wrapped both arms around his leg. "Are you fighting?"
"We are telling the truth," he said.
"Does truth make people angry?"
"Usually."
"Then tell it nicer."
Maria laughed through tears. Daniel lifted Sofia, and the child pulled her mother closer until all three stood in an awkward circle.
"Nobody should be alone," Sofia reminded them.
Later, after she fell asleep on the study sofa, Daniel examined the six-second bracelet recording with headphones. Beneath the stranger's voice was a faint mechanical rhythm. He recognized the old freight elevator under the mansion. The audio had not been captured at the warehouse. It had been added remotely after the upload.
Someone inside the mansion had edited both recordings.
Maria placed the digital recorder beside the computer. "Can you recover the missing words?"
Daniel called Julian Cross, who brought an audio specialist before dawn. The specialist mapped breaths and background sounds. The sentence contained eleven cuts. Daniel's words had been collected from calls stored on the private archive server.
Only Daniel, Lorenzo, and Vincent had ever known that server existed.
Lorenzo was dead.
"Vincent," Maria said.
Daniel stared at the waveform. "Evidence can be planted."
"You are still protecting him."
"I am protecting certainty. If we accuse him and fail, he controls half the captains."
Julian opened the account records from the ledger. He had broken one layer of code. The letter V was not tied to Vincent's name. It was tied to an account called Veritas, Latin for truth. Every Veritas payment required two approvals: one from Crow's Crown and one from the Moretti counselor.
Vincent had approved fourteen payments after Lorenzo's death.
The most recent had gone to Leo Mancini three hours before Maria's kidnapping.
Daniel summoned Leo's family, searched his properties, and found the captain's body in the trunk of a car near the river. He had been shot before the operation at Pier Nineteen. The man Maria saw in the warehouse had used a realistic mask and Leo's voice, synthesized from council recordings.
The corpse held a note in its mouth.
FOUNDERS' NIGHT. BRING EVERY CROWN TO THE LION'S HOUSE.
Founders' Night was the annual private gathering at which the five New York families renewed territory agreements. It would take place in Daniel's mansion the following evening.
Canceling would signal weakness. Holding it would place every major leader inside Vincent's reach.
Daniel looked through the glass wall of his study at Vincent crossing the courtyard below. The counselor paused, glanced up, and smiled as though he could feel Daniel watching.
Maria touched Daniel's arm. "What do we do?"
"We give him exactly what he asked for."
"Every crown?"
May you like
Daniel looked at Sofia asleep beneath the blanket she had once placed around him.
"No," he said. "Only the one he thinks he deserves."
