Chapter 2 - The Ring From an Empty Grave)

Daniel locked the bedroom door.
He called no guards. He sent no message to Vincent, his consigliere and oldest friend. For the first time in years, he wanted a truth that belonged to no one else.
"Start at the beginning," he told Maria.
She looked toward the door through which Sofia had gone. "First promise me she will be safe."
"You entered my home under a false name. You carried my brother's ring. You do not set terms."
"Then you can kill me without hearing why Matteo feared you."
The words cut cleanly. Daniel stepped back.
Maria bent to gather the towels, not because they mattered, but because her hands needed work. "I met him six years ago at St. Catherine's free clinic in Queens. I worked reception during the day and cleaned offices at night. He came in with a split lip and said he had fallen off a bicycle."
Despite himself, Daniel remembered Matteo's grin. His brother had lied badly, especially about injuries.
"He came back the next week with books for the waiting room," Maria continued. "Then again with medicine the clinic could not afford. He told me his name was Matt Rossi. I knew he was hiding something. I did not know how much."
Their relationship had grown in borrowed hours: coffee after Maria's night shift, walks beneath the elevated train, dinners in a tiny apartment where Matteo washed dishes because Maria cooked. He spoke about leaving a family business but never described it. When Maria discovered she was pregnant, he laughed, cried, and painted half a nursery before admitting his real surname.
"He wanted to tell you," she said. "He believed you would help us disappear."
Daniel turned toward the windows. "He believed many things."
"The night before his car burned, he came to me covered in blood. It wasn't his. He gave me this ring and a key. He said there was a traitor close to you, someone moving money and weapons through Moretti routes. He had proof, but not enough. He told me to leave New York and never contact him unless I heard four notes."
"Four notes?"
Maria hummed the same melody Sofia would later sing in the burning garden, though neither of them could know that yet.
Daniel's hand tightened on the windowsill.
"Our mother sang that to us. No one outside the family knew it."
"Matteo taught it to me. He said if I ever heard it on the number he gave me, it meant you had learned the truth. The call never came. The next morning, the news said he was dead."
"Why wait five years?"
"Because two men came to my apartment before the police announced the death. They knew about the baby. One wore a Moretti pin."
Daniel turned. "Describe him."
"Tall. Gray at the temples. Burn scar under his left ear."
Daniel knew hundreds of men. He knew only one with that scar.
Rocco Vale managed the mansion's outer security.
Maria explained how she had fled to Philadelphia, changed Sofia's surname, and moved every few months. Three months ago, an envelope appeared beneath her door. It contained a photograph of Sofia leaving preschool and a single sentence: The lion has found his cub.
"So you came here," Daniel said.
"Running stopped protecting her. I decided to find the person Matteo feared."
"By washing my sheets."
"Invisible people hear everything."
Daniel almost smiled. Almost.
"The key?"
Maria's hand moved to her pocket and stopped. "I hid it."
"Where?"
"Somewhere no man in this house would think to search."
Daniel stepped closer. "I am rapidly losing patience."
"And I have been afraid for five years. You can survive five more minutes."
A soft knock interrupted them.
"Sir?" Vincent's voice came through the door. "Mrs. Bell said there was a disturbance."
Maria's face tightened.
Daniel watched her carefully. "Do you trust him?"
"Matteo did."
"That was not my question."
She shook her head once.
Daniel opened the door only wide enough to stand in the gap. Vincent Rizzo was fifty-two, silver-haired, perfectly tailored, and unfailingly calm. He had served Daniel's father before advising Daniel. He had held Daniel upright at Matteo's funeral.
"A misunderstanding," Daniel said.
Vincent looked past him at Maria and the fallen linen. "Does the misunderstanding need to disappear?"
Maria went still.
"No. Find Rocco Vale. Bring him to the blue office quietly."
Vincent's brows rose a fraction. "At midnight?"
"Is there a better hour for bad news?"
Vincent accepted the answer with a slight bow. Before leaving, he glanced at the blanket still wrapped around Daniel's shoulders.
"New style?"
Daniel shut the door.
Twenty minutes later, Vincent called. Rocco's room above the carriage house was empty. His closet had been cleared. His passport was gone.
On his mattress, security found a photograph of Sofia asleep in Maria's apartment.
Daniel ended the call and looked at Maria.
"You were followed here."
"I was careful."
"Careful is not the same as safe."
He crossed to the bedside table and pressed the house intercom. "Mrs. Bell, bring Sofia to my room. Lock the west wing. No one leaves the property."
Maria hurried toward him. "What are you doing?"
"Keeping my niece alive."
The word changed the air between them.
Daniel opened the false panel behind his bookshelf and removed a compact pistol. He checked the magazine, then offered the weapon to Maria.
She stared at it. "You believe me?"
"I believe Rocco ran. Belief in you will cost more."
She took the gun with practiced hands.
Daniel noticed. "A clinic receptionist?"
"Matteo taught me."
"Apparently my brother had a busy secret life."
Mrs. Bell arrived holding a sleepy Sofia. Daniel dismissed the housekeeper and opened his arms awkwardly. Maria hesitated, then allowed him to carry the child.
Sofia rested her head against his shoulder as if he were not a man half the city feared.
"Are we having a sleepover?" she murmured.
"Something like that."
"Mommy doesn't like guns."
Maria tucked the pistol behind her back.
Daniel felt Sofia's small hand close around the Moretti lion tattoo on his forearm. A sensation like grief rose in him, but it contained something warmer and more dangerous.
He had just discovered family.
Someone else had discovered her first.
His phone vibrated on the bed. A message from an unknown number appeared above a photograph taken through the bedroom window only seconds earlier.

In the picture, Daniel was holding Sofia.
The message beneath it read, She has Matteo's eyes. Ask Maria what else she took from his body.
