Chapter 9 - michael's secret)

Daniel read the sentence until the words stopped meaning anything.

DANIEL MUST NEVER REMEMBER WHAT HE SAW BEFORE THE FIRE.

Signed electronically by Michael Hale.

His brother.

The man Daniel had spent seven years mourning.

The man he believed died trying to expose Graybridge.

Rachel touched his arm.

"Maybe the signature was forged."

"Like the authorization forms."

"Exactly."

Quinn did not assume anything.

"We verify."

Metadata analysis began.

The result made everything worse.

The note had been entered from Michael's authenticated workstation.

Six hours before the fire.

Daniel paced the hotel suite.

"He knew."

Rachel said, "We don't know what he knew."

"He enrolled me."

"We don't know that."

"My name is there."

"Your name was also on the company."

Daniel stared at her.

"What if Michael wasn't trying to expose Graybridge?"

Rachel hesitated.

"What if he was part of it?"

The possibility was unbearable.

Quinn called.

Another file had opened.

Video.

Daniel and Rachel watched together.

Michael appeared on screen.

Alive.

Seven years younger.

He looked exhausted.

"If anyone outside Graybridge sees this, the containment system has failed."

Daniel leaned toward the laptop.

Michael continued.

"My brother was exposed tonight to information he cannot safely possess."

Rachel looked at Daniel.

Michael's voice cracked.

"I did not authorize what happened to him."

Daniel froze.

Michael continued.

"Victor wants Daniel's memory erased. I argued against using C17 because the neurological risk is unacceptable."

Relief and horror struck at once.

Michael had not volunteered him.

But Michael knew.

"The only reason I agreed to temporary suppression was because Daniel saw the primary subject."

Primary subject.

Daniel whispered, "Who?"

Michael looked away from the camera.

"If Daniel remembers Subject Zero, Graybridge will kill him."

The recording ended.

No identity.

No explanation.

Quinn searched the archive.

Subject Zero was referenced dozens of times.

But every direct identifier was encrypted behind another layer.

Rachel asked, "What did you see before the fire?"

Daniel closed his eyes.

Fragments returned.

Michael's office.

A laboratory corridor.

A locked room.

A person seated behind glass.

Not a patient bed.

A chair.

He remembered a woman.

Dark hair.

Maybe.

Her face hidden.

She lifted her head.

Daniel had seen something that made him step backward.

What?

He tried harder.

Pain exploded behind his eyes.

He gasped.

Rachel grabbed him.

"Stop."

"I almost had it."

"You nearly collapsed."

"I need to remember."

"No. You need to stay alive."

The microdrive revealed other facts.

Graybridge had operated through at least eleven research institutions.

Hale Biomedical had been one.

Patients had been exposed without informed consent.

Some were military veterans.

Some were trauma patients.

Some were children.

Rachel stopped reading.

Daniel couldn't.

The records showed people whose memories had been manipulated to conceal abuse, financial crimes, and witness testimony.

Graybridge had become something beyond research.

It was a service.

Pay enough money and certain memories could become unreliable.

A witness could forget a face.

An executive could forget a meeting.

A victim could doubt what happened.

Daniel felt sick.

"This is why people protect it."

Quinn nodded.

"Imagine what this is worth."

Rachel whispered, "And what people would do to keep it hidden."

One name appeared repeatedly in payment records.

CAINE STRATEGIC HOLDINGS.

Victor.

But another code appeared above him.

DIRECTOR E.

Daniel searched.

Nothing.

Director E seemed to have authority over Victor.

That meant Victor was not the highest level.

Rachel stared at the screen.

"The bottle was never the real plan."

Daniel remembered the first message.

"Whoever texted me knew everything."

"Adrian?"

"Maybe."

Then Vanessa called.

Her voice shook.

"Daniel, I found something."

"What?"

"One of Adrian's old messages."

"What does it say?"

"He sent it months ago. I thought it was nonsense."

"Read it."

Vanessa paused.

"When the daughter points at red, the father will finally open white."

Daniel's skin went cold.

Lily pointing at Vanessa.

Vanessa wearing red.

The white horse.

Rachel whispered, "That was planned."

The entire sequence had been anticipated.

Maybe engineered.

Vanessa's arrival.

The bottle.

Lily's accusation.

Daniel finding the white horse.

Someone wanted the archive opened.

Daniel asked Vanessa, "Why didn't you tell us this before?"

"Because I didn't understand it."

"Send me the message."

She did.

Quinn examined the metadata.

The message had come from Adrian Vale's verified number four months earlier.

Rachel sat back.

"Adrian wanted us to open Michael's archive."

Daniel nodded.

"But why use us instead of doing it himself?"

Quinn answered.

"Because he couldn't get the horse."

"Or couldn't decrypt the drive," Rachel said.

Daniel looked at the files.

Then he remembered Victor's obsession with getting it.

"Maybe Victor couldn't either."

Quinn nodded.

"Michael may have created access conditions connected to you."

They searched the newly opened directory.

At the bottom was an executable file.

AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED.

It requested three things.

Daniel Hale biometric confirmation.

Rachel Hale biometric confirmation.

And a voice phrase.

They had no phrase.

Then Daniel remembered Michael's inscription beneath the horse.

KEEP RUNNING FORWARD.

Daniel spoke it.

The screen changed.

ACCESS LEVEL TWO UNLOCKED.

Rachel stared.

A new video loaded automatically.

Michael appeared again.

This time, his first words were different.

"Daniel, if you are seeing this, then I failed to keep Graybridge buried."

Daniel stopped breathing.

Michael continued.

"And if Rachel is beside you, then Victor has already begun using your family against you."

Rachel covered her mouth.

Michael looked directly into the camera.

"I need you to understand one thing before you decide whether to trust me."

He paused.

"The fire that killed me was not Victor's plan."

Daniel leaned closer.

May you like

Michael's face filled the screen.

"It was mine."
