Chapter 4 - what vanessa knew)

Vanessa Cole sat alone in Interview Room Three.

Her red dress looked almost unreal beneath the harsh police lighting.

The elegance was gone.

Her makeup had begun to smudge beneath her eyes.

Detective Quinn placed two photographs on the metal table.

One showed the orange bottle.

The other showed Rachel unconscious on the bed.

Vanessa refused to look down.

"I already told the officer everything."

Quinn sat opposite her.

"Tell me again."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"I arrived at Daniel's house shortly after one."

"Why?"

"We were meeting Rachel."

"About what?"

"A charity dinner."

"Daniel was there?"

"I thought he would be."

"He wasn't?"

"He arrived as I did."

"Did you drive together?"

"No."

"Why were you holding hands when you entered the bedroom?"

Vanessa's irritation showed.

"I slipped on the polished hallway floor."

"And Mr. Hale caught you."

"Yes."

"Convenient."

Vanessa leaned forward.

"Are you accusing me of sleeping with my best friend's husband?"

"No."

"Then why are we discussing it?"

"Because appearances matter."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"My best friend almost dies and this is what you care about?"

Quinn pushed the picture of the medicine bottle closer.

"I care about this."

"It isn't mine."

"It fell out of your handbag."

"Then someone put it there."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Quinn watched her.

"Victor Caine?"

Vanessa's composure shattered.

It lasted less than a second.

But it was enough.

Quinn leaned back.

"Thank you."

Vanessa stared at her.

"For what?"

"For answering my question."

"I didn't answer anything."

"You didn't have to."

Vanessa looked toward the mirrored wall.

"I want an attorney."

"You may have one."

Quinn stood.

Vanessa spoke before she reached the door.

"Detective."

Quinn turned.

"If Rachel mentioned that name, she doesn't understand what she's dealing with."

"Then help me understand."

Vanessa looked down.

"I can't."

"Can't or won't?"

"Can't."

"Why?"

Vanessa slowly lifted her eyes.

"Because Victor doesn't threaten you."

"What does he do?"

"He proves he doesn't need to."

Quinn returned to the chair.

"Start talking."

Vanessa's breathing changed.

"I met him eight years ago."

"Where?"

"At a private medical fundraiser in Boston."

"What did he do?"

"I thought he was an investor."

"In what?"

"Biotechnology."

"Graybridge?"

Vanessa's head snapped up.

Quinn nodded.

"Rachel knew the word."

Vanessa whispered, "Then she's in more danger than I thought."

"What is Graybridge?"

Vanessa stared at the table for a long time.

"Officially?"

"Start there."

"A private research network."

"Researching what?"

"Neurological treatments. Memory disorders. Trauma recovery. Sedation protocols."

"And unofficially?"

Vanessa's hands tightened.

"I don't know everything."

"What do you know?"

"They learned how certain compounds could interfere with short-term memory."

Quinn did not move.

"Interfere how?"

"Create gaps."

"Like what happened to Rachel."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I never wanted Rachel hurt."

"Yet you were involved."

"I didn't poison her."

"Your phone contained messages about doses."

Vanessa looked up sharply.

"You have my phone?"

"Should we?"

Vanessa realized the trap.

She said nothing.

Quinn continued.

"Was Rachel being dosed?"

Vanessa whispered, "Yes."

"By you?"

"No."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Quinn leaned forward.

"Vanessa, a three-year-old girl watched you put something in her mother's milk."

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"I put something in the milk."

Quinn went still.

"What?"

"It wasn't poison."

"What was it?"

"A neutralizer."

"Explain."

Vanessa covered her face.

"I found out yesterday that Rachel had already been exposed again. I was given a powder that was supposed to reduce the effect."

"Given by whom?"

Vanessa looked up.

"Someone who told me he wanted to help."

"Victor?"

"No."

"Who?"

"I never got his name."

"Why didn't you call Rachel and warn her?"

"Because I was told they were monitoring every call."

"Why didn't you call the police?"

Vanessa laughed once without humor.

"You think I never tried?"

Quinn waited.

Vanessa whispered.

"Seven years ago, after the Hale Research Center fire, I sent information to a federal investigator."

"What happened?"

"The investigator disappeared."

Quinn's expression finally changed.

"Name?"

"Thomas Reed."

Quinn wrote it down.

Vanessa continued.

"Three months later, his wife received a letter saying he'd left her. Six months after that, his body was found in a river two states away."

"You're saying Graybridge killed him?"

"I'm saying I stopped trying to be brave."

Quinn slid Rachel's photograph closer.

"And today?"

Vanessa's tears finally fell.

"Today I tried."

Meanwhile, Daniel refused to leave Rachel's hospital room.

Police posted an officer outside.

Another remained near Lily.

Daniel showed Detective Quinn the anonymous messages when she returned.

He also handed her the memory card.

Rachel did not object this time.

Quinn watched the recordings in silence.

When she finished, she turned toward Rachel.

"You filmed Vanessa putting something in your milk?"

"No."

"You said milk was important."

"I marked the carton."

Daniel looked at her.

"Did anyone check the kitchen?"

Quinn called another officer.

Minutes later, the answer came.

The milk carton Rachel had marked was still in the refrigerator.

Untouched.

A second carton had been opened.

The bottom had no blue mark.

Daniel stared at Rachel.

"Someone switched it."

She nodded.

Quinn asked, "Who had access to the kitchen today?"

Rachel began listing names.

Mrs. Bell.

Two cleaning staff.

The chef.

Daniel.

Rachel.

Lily.

Vanessa.

A gardener had entered briefly for water.

And one delivery man.

"What delivery?" Quinn asked.

Rachel frowned.

"I don't remember ordering anything."

Daniel looked at her.

"Neither do I."

Quinn made another call.

The security footage showed a delivery van arriving at 11:48.

A man in a gray uniform carried two boxes inside.

His face remained turned away from every camera.

Mrs. Bell signed for the packages.

One contained imported table linens.

The other had disappeared.

Daniel felt the room grow colder.

"What was in the missing box?"

Nobody knew.

Quinn turned back to Rachel.

"Vanessa says she put something in your milk."

Daniel's entire body tightened.

Rachel closed her eyes.

"What?"

"She says it was a neutralizing compound."

Daniel stared at Quinn.

"You believe her?"

"I believe she admitted touching the milk."

"She almost killed Rachel."

"We don't know that."

Daniel stood.

"My daughter watched her."

Quinn's voice remained calm.

"Children tell the truth about what they see. They do not always understand what it means."

Daniel looked toward Lily sleeping on the small sofa.

Quinn continued.

"We recovered hospital toxicology. Rachel's blood contained a sedative compound."

"From the milk."

"Possibly."

"And the pills?"

Quinn hesitated.

"What?"

"The tablets from the bottle are not sedatives."

Daniel's anger gave way to confusion.

"What are they?"

"We don't know exactly yet."

Rachel whispered.

"Then why was the bottle in Vanessa's bag?"

Quinn looked at both of them.

"That is the question."

Daniel's phone vibrated.

This time, it was an email.

No sender information.

Attached was a security photograph from inside his own mansion.

It showed a man standing in the upstairs hallway outside Lily's bedroom.

The timestamp was from three nights earlier.

Daniel zoomed in.

The man's face was visible.

Silver hair.

Dark suit.

Scar along his jaw.

Daniel dropped the phone.

Rachel grabbed his wrist.

"What?"

He couldn't answer.

Because the face had returned with terrifying clarity.

The laboratory.

The gray folder.

His brother Michael arguing.

A calm stranger telling Daniel he needed to forget what he had seen.

Daniel picked up the phone again.

May you like

The message beneath the photograph contained only four words.

DO YOU REMEMBER ME NOW?
