Chapter 8 - rachel's missing hour)

Daniel hated himself for thinking it.

Rachel had nearly died.

Rachel had uncovered the hidden cameras.

Rachel had warned him.

Rachel had risked everything.

Yet Victor's words infected his mind.

Identify your real traitor.

When Daniel returned to the hotel, Rachel immediately knew something was wrong.

"Where is Evelyn?"

"Still missing."

"What happened?"

"Victor knew about the police."

Rachel stared at him.

"Someone leaked it."

"Yes."

"And you're looking at me like that because?"

Daniel looked away.

Her expression changed.

"You think I told him."

"No."

"Don't lie."

"I don't think you did it intentionally."

Rachel laughed in disbelief.

"Intentionally?"

"Rachel, you were drugged for days."

"So?"

"What if they got information from you?"

She stopped.

Daniel continued carefully.

"What if you called someone and don't remember?"

Rachel sat on the edge of the bed.

There were gaps in her memory.

She had admitted that.

Some mornings she woke unable to remember the previous night.

She had once found herself in the library at three in the morning with no idea why she was there.

"Check my phone."

Daniel did.

Call records showed nothing unusual.

Messages.

Nothing.

Email.

Nothing.

Then Quinn arrived.

She carried a report from the hospital.

"The sedative used on Rachel is unusual."

Rachel looked up.

"How unusual?"

"It doesn't just cause sleepiness. In certain controlled doses, it can create a period of suggestibility and impaired memory formation."

Daniel stared.

"Meaning someone could question her?"

"Possibly."

"And she wouldn't remember?"

"Possibly."

Rachel went pale.

Quinn continued.

"The highest concentration in your blood likely occurred three nights ago."

Rachel closed her eyes.

"Tuesday."

Daniel asked, "What happened Tuesday?"

"I don't know."

Quinn placed another item on the table.

A traffic camera photograph.

Rachel's car.

Timestamp 2:37 a.m.

Leaving the mansion.

Daniel looked at her.

"You left the house?"

"I don't remember."

The next camera captured her vehicle twenty-two minutes later near an industrial district.

Another image showed her returning at 4:11 a.m.

Rachel's breathing became shallow.

"Where did I go?"

Quinn pulled out a map.

"Graybridge Avenue."

Daniel and Rachel looked at each other.

Quinn added, "There used to be a private clinic there."

"Used to?" Daniel asked.

"It closed five years ago."

Rachel whispered, "Take me there."

Daniel said no immediately.

Rachel turned on him.

"If I went there, I need to know why."

"Someone drugged you."

"Exactly."

"Then you don't go back."

Quinn intervened.

"We can search it."

The clinic stood behind rusted gates.

Its sign had been removed.

Most windows were boarded.

Inside, dust covered the floors.

Old medical rooms lined narrow corridors.

The building appeared abandoned.

Until investigators found fresh footprints.

They led downstairs.

A locked steel door stood beneath the main staircase.

Simon Grant's silver key from the mansion matched it.

Inside was a room that had been recently used.

Computer equipment.

A chair.

Medical supplies.

A camera facing the chair.

Rachel stared.

Memory flashed.

She saw herself sitting there.

A voice asking questions.

Where did Michael hide the archive?

She heard herself answer.

I don't know.

Where is the white horse?

At Evelyn's house.

Rachel staggered.

Daniel caught her.

"What?"

"I told them."

"Told them what?"

"The horse."

Quinn turned.

Rachel covered her mouth.

"They drugged me. They brought me here. They asked about Michael."

Daniel held her.

"It wasn't your fault."

"I told them where it was."

"You didn't know what you were doing."

Rachel's eyes filled with tears.

"I gave them Evelyn."

Quinn examined the computer.

Most drives had been removed.

One remained.

A technician recovered partial video.

Rachel appeared restrained in the chair.

A man stood behind the camera.

Not Victor.

Adrian Vale.

The same man Vanessa claimed was trying to help.

Daniel's anger exploded.

"He lied to her."

Vanessa had trusted Adrian.

Rachel had seen him in the mansion.

He had administered the drugged interrogation.

Yet the video contained something stranger.

At one point Adrian leaned close to Rachel.

He whispered where the camera almost failed to capture it.

"When they ask about the archive, give them the horse. Nothing else."

Rachel looked dazed.

Adrian continued.

"The horse must be opened before Victor gets it."

Daniel stared.

Quinn replayed the line.

Rachel whispered, "He wanted us to find the drive."

"Maybe," Quinn said.

"Then why drug me?"

"We don't know."

The final recovered clip showed Adrian looking directly into the camera after Rachel was removed.

He said one sentence.

"Michael, if this works, your brother will finally remember."

Daniel stepped closer to the monitor.

"He was talking to Michael?"

Quinn shook her head.

"Michael has been dead seven years."

Rachel stared at the screen.

"Unless the recording wasn't meant for Michael."

Daniel looked at her.

"Then who?"

She whispered, "Someone who knew Michael's plan."

An alert came from the secure lab.

The microdrive had partially decrypted.

One folder was accessible.

Its title:

PROJECT MNEMOSYNE.

Inside were hundreds of records.

Daniel recognized Hale Biomedical letterhead.

Graybridge symbols.

Patient codes.

Video logs.

Financial transactions.

Then one document stopped him.

SUBJECT D.H.

Daniel Hale.

His own name.

Enrollment date.

Seven years earlier.

One day before the fire.

Daniel's throat closed.

"What is this?"

Quinn opened the file.

Daniel had been listed as a research subject.

Not a researcher.

A handwritten note appeared at the bottom.

SUBJECT EXPOSED TO COMPOUND C17 FOLLOWING INCIDENT. MEMORY RECONSOLIDATION UNSUCCESSFUL. SUBJECT RETAINS PARTIAL RECALL. CONTINUED OBSERVATION REQUIRED.

Rachel stared at her husband.

"They didn't just drug you that night."

Daniel could barely speak.

"They experimented on me."

Another file opened.

The author field contained a name.

Dr. Michael Hale.

Daniel stared at his dead brother's signature.

May you like

Beneath it was a final note.

DANIEL MUST NEVER REMEMBER WHAT HE SAW BEFORE THE FIRE.
